Experiments were conducted on a range of microalgal prey of varying sizes and motility patterns. Significant feeding was found in all prey of a size range of 4.5-19.8 μm, with Holling type III functional responses observed for most prey types. The highest clearance rates occurred when nauplii fed on the dinoflagellate Heterocapsa sp. and the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii (respectively, 0.61 and 0.70 mL ind-1 d-1), suggesting an optimal prey:predator ratio of 0.09. Additional experiments were conducted to examine the effects of the presence of alternative prey (either Heterocapsa sp. or Gymnodinium litoralis) on the functional response to the haptophyte Isochrysis galbana. In the bialgal mixtures, clearance and ingestion rates of I. galbana along the range of the functional response were significantly reduced as a result of selectivity towards the larger, alternative prey. Paradoxically, relatively large prey trigger a perception response in the nauplii, but most likely such prey cannot be completely ingested and a certain degree of sloppy feeding may occur. Our results are further evidence of the complex prey-specific feeding interactions that are likely to occur in natural assemblages with several available prey types. OBJECTIVES:To determine if the pathogens adenovirus (ADV), coronavirus (CoV), encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), enterovirus (EV), influenza A-D (IAV, IBV, ICV, and IDV), porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2), and porcine rotaviruses A and C (RVA and RVC), are aerosolized at the animal-interface, and if humans working in these environments are carrying these viruses in their nasal airways. STUDY:This cross-sectional study took place in Sarawak, Malaysia among 11 pig farms, 2 abattoirs, and 3 animal markets in June and July of 2017. Pig feces, pig oral secretions, bioaerosols, and worker nasal wash samples were collected and analyzed via rPCR and rRT-PCR for respiratory and diarrheal viruses. RESULTS:In all, 55 pig fecal, 49 pig oral or water, 45 bioaerosol, and 78 worker nasal wash samples were collected across 16 sites. PCV2 was detected in 21 pig fecal, 43 pig oral or water, 3 bioaerosol, and 4 worker nasal wash samples. In addition, one or more bioaerosol or pig samples were positive for EV, IAV, and RVC, and one or more worker samples were positive for ADV, CoV, IBV, and IDV. CONCLUSIONS:This study demonstrates that nucleic acids from a number of targeted viruses were present in pig oral secretions and pig fecal samples, and that several viruses were detected in bioaerosol samples or in the nasal passages of humans with occupational exposure to pigs. These results demonstrate the need for future research in strengthening viral surveillance at the human-animal interface, specifically through expanded bioaerosol sampling efforts and a seroepidemiological study of individuals with exposure to pigs in this region for PCV2 infection. The following treatments were established in plots: B. macrantha with nutrients, B. macrantha without nutrients, V. triphyllum with nutrients, and V. triphyllum without nutrients, each one with three repetitions. The phytosanitary condition, greatest and least diameter of the plant canopy, and height were measured for each planted individual. Analysis of planted species survival using the Kaplan-Meier method was performed and rates of relative growth (RGR) of height and coverage were calculated for all individuals, with which ANOVAs were performed to assess differences between treatments. The probability of survival of planted species decreased greatly over time. Significant differences between treatments were found for height and cover. According to field observation and statistical analysis, the application of nutrients considerably improved the growth in height and cover of B. macrantha, a result useful for the implementation of ecological restoration activities in pastures. En cuanto a la estudio trófico del hábitat de Hypolobocera sp, se recurrió a trabajo de laboratorio (Roldán, 1992) y un equipo de muestro fisicoquímico de campo. Finalmente se sacrificaron algunos individuos para analizar la dieta de la población de estudio por medio de identificación de contenidos estomacales. Se capturaron 86 individuos, con los cuales se desarrolló el análisis sobre la abundancia y tamaño poblacional, el nivel trófico, su dimorfismo sexual basado en el tamaño corporal y posibles migraciones o desplazamientos de los individuos entre los cinco sitios de muestreo a lo largo de los 987 m de la quebrada Mano de Oso. La población de Hypolobocera sp se caracterizó por presentar un marcado dimorfismo sexual y el análisis de contenidos estomacales dio como resultado una marcada tendencia de la población a ser detritívora ya que en el total de muestras tomadas se encontró un 80% correspondiente a material vegetal en descomposición. La incorporación al suelo de cultivos como abono verde puede ser una herramienta para atenuar estos procesos. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de la utilización de una leguminosa anual (Melilotus albus Medik.) como abono verde sobre las condiciones de fertilidad del suelo y la producción de materia seca (MS) y proteína bruta (PB) de los cultivos subsiguientes en suelos franco arenosos de fertilidad media (2,4% MO) típicos de la Región Semiárida Pampeana. Se compararon dos tratamientos, uno con leguminosa cortada simulando que fue comida por el ganado y otro con leguminosa enterrada contra un testigo sin leguminosa. Hubo un efecto positivo del abono verde sobre la producción de MS y PB del cultivo subsiguiente de centeno. Además, el nivel residual de nitratos en el suelo fue mayor en los tratamientos con abono verde que en el testigo. Estos nutrientes posiblemente sólo pudieron ser aprovechados parcialmente por el centeno, debido a limitaciones hídricas durante el ciclo de este cultivo. En cuanto al contenido de MO, no hubo diferencias entre tratamientos; esta falta de respuesta podría deberse a una baja tasa de descomposición del abono verde, o a que los nitratos liberados fueron lixiviados por las lluvias ocurridas en los meses de febrero y marzo. Las inconsistencias en los resultados obtenidos sugieren la necesidad de profundizar esta investigación, evaluando la tasa de descomposición del material incorporado, y llevando ensayos a suelos entisoles, de menor fertilidad, también muy comunes en la región. PINO Description An account of the resource Las características microbiológicas y químicas del suelo cambian por la aplicación de abonos orgánicos y pueden resultar indicadores sensibles al impacto producido. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar los cambios a corto plazo en variables microbiológicas y químicas en respuesta a la aplicación de abonos orgánicos bajo condiciones de incubación. Fracciones de suelo sin (testigo) y con agregado de compost y vermicompost fueron incubadas por 90 días a 28 ºC y 60% del agua disponible remanente. Cada 10 días se midió actividad microbiana total (AMT), abundancia de bacterias y hongos totales, microorganismos celulolíticos, fijadores de N, amonificadores y nitrificadores, N-NO3, N total, P-H2CO3, K intercambiable y materia orgánica. La AMT y los microorganismos amonificadores y celulolíticos fueron sensibles a la optimización de temperatura y humedad del suelo, y no frente al abonado orgánico. Los microorganismos celulolíticos incrementaron durante la incubación, mientras que la AMT y los amonificadores disminuyeron. La aplicación de vermicompost solo tuvo un efecto inmediato positivo en la población de microorganismos fijadores de N y nitrificadores, pero no perduró en el tiempo. En cambio, el contenido de N total, P-H2CO3 y K intercambiable fueron indicadores sensibles potenciales para la evaluación de dicha práctica agronómica en suelos áridos regadíos. Estas características químicas aumentaron con la aplicación de los abonos orgánicos durante 90 días de incubación. El P-H2CO3 y K intercambiable fueron más sensibles a la aplicación de compost, del mismo modo que se había observado en el campo. La variación temporal de las características químicas del suelo frente al abonado orgánico mostró mayor diferencia que las microbiológicas convirtiéndose en indicadores sensibles a esa práctica.
