The technologies selected for constructing anaerobic biodigesters have been: fixed dome (Chinese model), plastic tube or polyethylene with continuous flow (Taiwan type) and anaerobic lagoon covered with a high density polyethylene geomembrane. From these technologies 69 biodigesters were constructed or repaired to a lesser extent-, in farms from the provinces Matanzas, Sancti Spiritus and Las Tunas, at the Experimental Station «Indio Hatuey», in the mountain community Magueyal (Santiago de Cuba), in a pig production facility from Las Tunas and a livestock production farm belonging to the Ministry of Interior, in Jovellanos (Matanzas province). These 69 biodigesters comprised a total digestion capacity of 1 665 m3 and generated productions of 600 060 m3 of biogas, which were used for cooking food and feedstuffs, electricity generation and brick firing; as well as 2 601 t of biofertilizers, used for improving the fertility of 1 830 ha of soils; in addition, they allow eliminating the contamination produced by cattle and pig dung in the productive scenarios, which generates a positive environmental impact. The installation was carried out of 52 bioproduct production plants from biodigester effluents, enriched with native microorganisms, which are used in animal and plant health, crop nutrition, elimination of bad odors in livestock production facilities, bioremediation of lagoons contaminated with organic residues and in bioceramic filters</text>

Surveys of the intensity of cercospora leaf spot of lettuce caused by Cercospora longissima were performed in 25 conventional and 25 organic farming areas in 2 planting periods, January-April (I) and June-September (II) 2002, in State of Pernambuco (Brazil). Disease prevalence was high (> 88%) in all evaluated situations. Disease severity ranged from 0.0 to 16.9% in conventional farming areas and from 0.0 to 22.5% in organic farming areas. In both systems, disease severity was significantly higher in period I when precipitation was almost 3 times higher to that in period II. However, only in period II, significant differences in disease severity were found between farming systems, with high values in the organic system. There were no significant correlations among disease severity levels in the areas in both evaluated periods inside each farming system.</text>

<text>The purpose of this study is to analyse the colonos’ social representations in Botuverá (SC), concerning the use of the margins of the water courses and the meanings of exotic forestry species planting (eucalyptus, above all) in their rural establishments. Examining the heart of peasantry values in general and, in particular, the values expressed by the colonos, we found that the margins of water courses are considered as productive areas for the family. On the other hand, the planting of exotic forestry species appears with more intensity in the rural establishments where the above-mentioned peasant values do not greatly influence the decision-making process, as well as in those establishments that do not exclusively depend on the use of the land. We have concluded that the strategies for environmental preservation should take into account the family farmer’s practical needs and symbolic aspects, creating joint alternatives of conservative use, valuing the fact that there was a greater interest in preserving the biodiversity in the establishments where the peasant categories were more evident. Key-words: Family farming; Riparian vegetation; Permanent preservation areas.</text>
