With limited access to vaccine or strong antiviral treatment for the novel coronavirus, actions in terms of prevention and containment of the virus transmission rely mostly on social distancing among susceptible and high-risk populations. Aside from the direct challenges posed by the novel coronavirus pandemic, there are serious and growing secondary consequences caused by the physical distancing and isolation guidelines, among vulnerable populations. Moreover, the healthcare system’s resources and capacity have been focused on addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, causing less urgent care, such as physical neurorehabilitation and assessment, to be paused, canceled, or delayed. Overall, this has left elderly adults, in particular those with neuromusculoskeletal (NMSK) conditions, without the required service support. However, in many cases, such as stroke, the available time window of recovery through rehabilitation is limited since neural plasticity decays quickly with time. Given that future waves of the outbreak are expected in the coming months worldwide, it is important to discuss the possibility of using available technologies to address this issue, as societies have a duty to protect the most vulnerable populations. In this perspective review article, we argue that intelligent robotics and wearable technologies can help with remote delivery of assessment, assistance, and rehabilitation services while physical distancing and isolation measures are in place to curtail the spread of the virus. By supporting patients and medical professionals during this pandemic, robots, and smart digital mechatronic systems can reduce the non-COVID-19 burden on healthcare systems. Digital health and cloud telehealth solutions that can complement remote delivery of assessment and physical rehabilitation services will be the subject of discussion in this article due to their potential in enabling more effective and safer NMSDK rehabilitation, assistance, and assessment service delivery. This article will hopefully lead to an interdisciplinary dialogue between the medical and engineering sectors, stake holders, and policy makers for a better delivery of care for those with NMSK conditions during a global health crisis including future pandemics. Tucumán es la principal productora, con 70% de la superficie nacional implantada. Resulta casi imposible pensar en el desarrollo económico y social de Tucumán separado de la caña de azúcar y su industrialización. Ahora, con los nuevos paradigmas energéticos que desafían al cultivo, la investigación tecnológica y el trabajo con los actores del sector tienen como objetivo que la producción de la caña de azúcar no solo resulte rentable, sino que además muestre una gestión ambiental coherente con el aumento de superficie de estos últimos 20 años. La sustentabilidad del cultivo de caña de azúcar se relaciona especialmente con el modo de realizar la cosecha, que es la etapa de mayor importancia en su producción. El tipo de cosecha de caña de azúcar influencia una cantidad de aspectos que hacen al desempeño productivo del cultivo, a su resultado económico, a la generación de empleo sectorial y regional, a la evolución de la tecnología industrial y al impacto ambiental de la producción. Además, en cualquiera de sus tipos, la cosecha se destaca por su impacto dentro del costo productivo total, representando entre 25% al 35%, y por lo tanto, cualquier variación que se registre en esa etapa repercute fuertemente en la rentabilidad final del cultivo. En esta revisión bibliográfica se presenta la evolución de las diferentes prácticas de cosecha en la Argentina resaltando la importancia que estas tienen sobre la productividad y longevidad de los cañaverales y las consecuencias sobre los recursos naturales, en especial el suelo. Se realiza una crítica sobre el uso de las cosechadoras integrales, con énfasis sobre las ventajas, limitaciones y desafíos técnicos de este paradigma tecnológico. La mecanización integral de la cosecha –se concluye– dista mucho de ser simplemente el reemplazo de la mano de obra por una máquina, más bien representa un cambio que lleva implícito un nuevo ordenamiento de la actividad; caracterizado por la notable reducción del tiempo necesario para la zafra. Los problemas todavía pendientes de solucionar –la falta de adaptación a plantaciones de poco tamaño, las pérdidas de cosecha a campo y en la interface campo-industria, el potencial de compactación de los suelos/decaimiento de los cultivos y la quema del rastrojo remanente– indican que el sistema mecanizado integral está lejos de ser el fin del camino de desarrollo de la cosecha de caña de azúcar y que todavía resulta necesaria una mayor oferta tecnológica para esta etapa productiva clave. En el proceso histórico de construcción de la disciplina seobserva claramente diferentes momentos: el período hispánico colonial con recopilaciones fundamentalmente a cargo de religiosos jesuitas; un período comprendido entre los siglos XlX y XX en el que se llevan adelante estudios de corte etnográfico registrando en las diferentes lenguas los nombres de las lantas y usos asociadas a ellas por parte de pueblos que rápidamente estaban desapareciendo, y finalmente se registra un cambio en los programas de investigación. Las investigaciones modernas profundizan aspectos más interpretativos de corte antropológico, incorporan miradas nuevas a partir de la ecología, aparecen nuevos estudios como la etnomedicina urbana y aportes necesarios para tomar decisiones en el manejo de recursos naturales para la conservación. Finalmente se sugiere que los estudios futuros incluyan los aspectos ecológicos, la evaluación fitoquímica, farmacológica y toxicológica de las especies, y por último, hacer énfasis en la protección y conservación, tanto de las plantas como de las comunidades humanas estudiadas.
