                <text>Los regímenes naturales de incendios han sufrido modificaciones; consecuentemente, es indispensable disponer de herramientas robustas para el seguimiento post-fuego de la vegetación. Los satélites de alta resolución temporal permiten construir series temporales de índices de vegetación para monitorear la recuperación post-fuego. Una de las técnicas utilizadas consiste en comparar la serie temporal de una parcela quemada con la de una parcela control no quemada. Sin embargo, para su implementación es necesario seleccionar parcelas control que antes del incendio tengan una vegetación con igual estructura y funcionamiento que la parcela quemada. Un estudio previo definió criterios biológicos para localizar parcelas quemadas y control con idéntico funcionamiento pre-incendio. Para testearlos se propuso una rutina de test no paramétricos de baja potencia estadística, analizando el cociente QVI (Quotient Vegetation Index) de las series temporales de NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) de parcelas control y quemadas. Sin embargo, actualmente existen técnicas de análisis autorregresivas con mayor potencia estadística. Los objetivos del presente trabajo fueron proponer seis nuevas rutinas basadas en test autorregresivos y comparar el desempeño de éstas contra la rutina no paramétrica. Seleccionamos 13.700 parcelas de bosque y extrajimos las series temporales NDVI MODIS entre 2002 y 2005. Aleatoriamente seleccionamos 43 parcelas de referencia. A través de las rutinas planteadas comparamos la serie temporal de referencia con cada una de las 13.657 series restantes. Estimamos el desempeño midiendo la distancia euclidiana entre la serie de temporal de la parcela de referencia y las series temporales de las parcelas aceptadas por cada rutina. También, medimos la calidad y contabilizamos la cantidad de las series temporales QVI seleccionadas por cada rutina. Las rutinas autorregresivas tuvieron mejor desempeño, ya que seleccionaron parcelas control con series temporales de NDVI con la máxima similitud con respecto a las parcelas de referencia y series QVI de mayor calidad.</text>

                <text>El objetivo de esta investigación fue seleccionar los principales recursos locales disponibles, con potencialidades para la alimentación de los ovinos, en el municipio Las Tunas provincia Las Tunas, Cuba. Se aplicó el método de consulta de expertos, a un panel de 26 miembros. Los recursos locales se clasificaron en no forrajeros y forrajeros. Su evaluación se basó en diferentes criterios: disponibilidad anual, costo total del suministro, valor nutricional, tiempo y costo de conservación, adaptabilidad a las condiciones edafoclimáticas locales, producción en periodo poco lluvioso, resistencia a plagas y enfermedades, y producción en condiciones de secano y sin fertilización. Se seleccionaron nueve recursos locales disponibles para la alimentación de los ovinos, el 66 % de los cuales fueron forrajeros. El mayor valor en recursos forrajeros correspondió a Leucaena leucocephala (Lam) de Wit (4,68 ± 0,02) y el menor, a Moringa oleifera Lam (3,18 ± 0,87). En los recursos no forrajeros, el carbonato de calcio tuvo el mayor valor (4,75 ± 0,75) y la vinaza de destilería, el menor (3,0 ± 0,10). En cuanto a la valoración integral de los recursos forrajeros, los mayores valores correspondieron a Saccharum officinarum L., L. leucocephala y las variedades de Pennisetum: 4,54; 4,51 y 4,43, respectivamente; y los menores a Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray, M. oleifera y Morus alba L.: 2,99; 2,66 y 2,64, respectivamente. Se concluye que en el municipio Las Tunas existen entre cinco y seis recursos con potencialidades para la producción de ovinos, entre los que se destacan el carbonato de calcio como no forrajero y L. leucocephala como forrajero.</text>

                <text>Plutella  xylostella es una importante plaga de cultivos de brassicas en más de 100 países. El principal método de control  de P. xylostella se basa en el uso de insecticidas químicos. Sin embargo, esta especie se caracteriza por su rápido desarrollo de resistencia a casi todos los insecticidas. Se ha reportado que la aplicación de concentraciones bajas de insecticidas afecta la fisiología, bioquímica y ecología de los insectos. En este estudio, se realizó una selección de resistencia de cipermetrina durante ocho generaciones de P. xylostella  y se determinó la dosis subletal (CL20) de la línea resistente y de la línea susceptible. Posteriormente, la dosis subletal se aplicó a larvas de tercer instar para investigar su efecto en el porcentaje de pupación, peso de pupas, emergencia de adultos en dos generaciones (progenitores y descendientes), así como los tiempos de desarrollo de cada fase de desarrollo de P. xylostella. Se observó una disminución el porcentaje de pupas formadas, adultos emergidos y peso de pupas.  Por otro lado, el número de huevos depositados aumentó cuando los individuos fueron expuestos al insecticida. Lo anterior puede ser un factor importante para el manejo y control de esta plaga cuando se presenten problemas de resistencia a cipermetrina.</text>

                <text>El objetivo de la investigación consistió en realizar una selección y adaptación fenotípica de tres variedades élites de caña de azúcar (Saccharum officinarum L.) para la producción de panela granulada en la provincia de Bongará. Para ello, se eligió un factorial en DBCA, y el esquema seguido en campo fue mediante el uso de nueve variedades, entres diferentes edades de corte, y en cuatro bloques, formando un total de 27 tratamientos. De las variedades elegidas, tres fueron autóctonas de la zona, y seis introducidas del ámbito nacional e internacional. El área experimental fue instalada en el anexo de Cocachimba a una altitud de 1721 m.s.n.m. Las variedades evaluadas fueron Mex73-523, Amarilla (PR10-59), Carriza (POJ29-61), V74-7, Mex73-1240, Colcamar (CO-421), Mex79-431, H32-8560 y Mex69-290.Las variables que se tuvieron en cuenta para la selección y la administración de los tratamientos fueron: “rendimiento de grados brix(°Bx)”, “biomasa(Tn/Ha)”, y “rendimiento de jugo (Kg jugo / 100 Kg d ecaña)”. Se obtuvieron diferencias significativas entre las medias de los tratamientos, para los rendimientos de grados brix(p = 0,000 &amp;lt; 0,05), biomasa (p = 0,000 &amp;lt; 0,05), y jugo (p = 0,000 &amp;lt; 0,05), a través de pruebas de análisis de varianza (PruebaANOVA).</text>

En particular, los géneros Azotobacter y Azospirillum son utilizados como agentes promotores de crecimiento vegetal debido a su capacidad para fijar nitrógeno atmosférico y producir hormonas de tipo indólico. Por tal razón, en este estudio se aislaron bacterias diazotróficas de los géneros Azotobacter y Azospirillum a partir de la rizósfera de cultivos de algodón en el Espinal (Tolima). Las poblaciones microbianas se caracterizaron fenotípicamente en los medios de cultivo semiespecíficos: Ashby y LG (Azotobacter sp.) y NFb, LGI y Batata (Azospirillum sp.). La promoción de crecimiento vegetal se determinó mediante la actividad de la enzima nitrogenasa por medio de la técnica de reducción de acetileno y producción de índoles por el método colorimétrico de Salkowsky. Se obtuvieron 9 aislamientos tentativos de Azotobacter sp. y 4 de Azospirillum sp. Se presentaron diferencias significativas en la prueba de reducción de acetileno con las cepas presuntivas de Azotobacter sp.: NAT 9 (206.43 nmol C2H2 mL-1.h-1), NAT 4, (292.77 nmol C2H2 mL-1.h-1), y NAT 6 (460.60 nmol C2H2 mL-1.h-1) y en la producción de índoles de las cepas NAT 19 (19.87 μg.mL-1) y NAT 13 (20.08 μg.mL-1). Por su eficiencia in vitro en la promoción de crecimiento vegetal se seleccionaron las cepas NAT9, NAT4, NAT6, NAT19 y NAT13 para ser evaluadas como principio activo en futuros inoculantes para el algodón en esta zona del departamento del Tolima. Abstract: As part of strategies for sustainable agriculture, it is necessary to reduce the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilisers through the use of biofertilisers. In particular, the genera Azotobacter and Azospirillum are used as plant growth promoters because of their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and indolic type hormones. For this reason, in this study were isolated diazotrophic bacteria of the genera Azotobacter and Azospirillum from the rhizosphere of cotton crops in Espinal (Tolima). The microbial populations were characterized phenotypically in specific semi culture media: Ashby and LG (Azotobacter sp.) and NFb, LGI and Batata (Azospirillum sp.). The promotion of plant growth was determined by the enzyme nitrogenase activity through acetylene reduction technique and production of indoles by the salkowsky colorimetric method. 9 isolates were obtained tentative Azotobacter sp. and 4 of Azospirillum sp. Significant differences in acetylene reduction test with presumptive strains of Azotobacter sp.: NAT 9 (206.43 nmol C2H2 mL-1.h-1), NAT, 4, (292.77 nmol C2H2 mL-1.h-1), and NAT 6 (460.60 nmol C2H2 mL-1.h-1) and indole production strains NAT 19 (19.87 μg.mL-1) and NAT 13 (20.08 μg.mL-1).                 <text>Since its first report in the Middle East in 2012, the Middle East respiratory syndrome-coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has become a global concern due to the high morbidity and mortality of individuals infected with the virus. Although the majority of MERS-CoV cases have been reported in Saudi Arabia, the overall risk in areas outside the Middle East remains significant as inside Saudi Arabia. Additional pandemics of MERS-CoV are expected, and thus novel tools and reagents for therapy and diagnosis are urgently needed. Here, we used phage display to develop novel monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that target MERS-CoV. A human Fab phage display library was panned against the S2 subunit of the MERS-CoV spike protein (MERS-S2P), yielding three unique Fabs (S2A3, S2A6, and S2D5). The Fabs had moderate apparent affinities (Half maximal effective concentration (EC50 = 123&amp;#8722;421 nM) for MERS-S2P, showed no cross-reactivity to spike proteins from other CoVs, and were non-aggregating and thermostable (Tm = 61.5&amp;#8722;80.4 &amp;#176;C). Reformatting the Fabs into IgGs (Immunoglobulin Gs) greatly increased their apparent affinities (KD = 0.17&amp;#8722;1.2 nM), presumably due to the effects of avidity. These apparent affinities were notably higher than that of a previously reported anti-MERS-CoV S2 reference mAb (KD = 8.7 nM). Furthermore, two of the three mAbs (S2A3 and S2D5) bound only MERS-CoV (Erasmus Medical Center (EMC)) and not other CoVs, reflecting their high binding specificity. However, the mAbs lacked MERS-CoV neutralizing activity.                 <text>In this work, we propose and demonstrate a carbon nanotube (CNT) field-effect transistor (FET) based biosensor for selective detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). CNT FETs were fabricated on a flexible Kapton substrate and the sensor was fabricated by immobilizing the reverse sequence of the 25-base portion of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase gene of the SARS-CoV-2 onto the CNT channel. The biosensors were tested for the synthetic positive and control target sequences. The biosensor showed a selective sensing response to the positive target sequence with a limit of detection of 10 fM. The promising results from our study suggest that the CNT FET based biosensors can be used as a diagnostic tool for the detection of SARS-CoV-2.</text>

                <text>Inhibition of N-myristoyltransferase has been validated pre-clinically as a target for the treatment of fungal and trypanosome infections, using species-specific inhibitors. In order to identify inhibitors of protozoan NMTs, we chose to screen a diverse subset of the Pfizer corporate collection against Plasmodium falciparum and Leishmania donovani NMTs. Primary screening hits against either enzyme were tested for selectivity over both human NMT isoforms (Hs1 and Hs2) and for broad-spectrum anti-protozoan activity against the NMT from Trypanosoma brucei. Analysis of the screening results has shown that structure-activity relationships (SAR) for Leishmania NMT are divergent from all other NMTs tested, a finding not predicted by sequence similarity calculations, resulting in the identification of four novel series of Leishmania-selective NMT inhibitors. We found a strong overlap between the SARs for Plasmodium NMT and both human NMTs, suggesting that achieving an appropriate selectivity profile will be more challenging. However, we did discover two novel series with selectivity for Plasmodium NMT over the other NMT orthologues in this study, and an additional two structurally distinct series with selectivity over Leishmania NMT. We believe that release of results from this study into the public domain will accelerate the discovery of NMT inhibitors to treat malaria and leishmaniasis. Our screening initiative is another example of how a tripartite partnership involving pharmaceutical industries, academic institutions and governmental/non-governmental organisations such as Medical Research Council and Wellcome Trust can stimulate research for neglected diseases.</text>
