                <text>Increased carbon dioxide levels (CO2) in the atmosphere triggered a cascade of physical and chemical changes in the ocean surface. Marine organisms producing carbonate shells are regarded as vulnerable to these physical (warming), and chemical (acidification) changes occurring in the oceans. In the last decade, the aquaculture production of the bivalve scallop Argopecten purpuratus (AP) showed declined trends along the Chilean coast. These negative trends have been ascribed to ecophysiological and biomineralization constraints in shell carbonate production. This work experimentally characterizes the biomechanical response of AP scallop shells subjected to climate change scenarios (acidification and warming) via quasi-static tensile and bending tests. The experimental results indicate the adaptation of mechanical properties to hostile growth scenarios in terms of temperature and water acidification. In addition, the mechanical response of the AP subjected to control climate conditions was analyzed with finite element simulations including an anisotropic elastic constitutive model for a two-fold purpose: Firstly, to calibrate the material model parameters using the tensile test curves in two mutually perpendicular directions (representative of the mechanical behavior of the material). Secondly, to validate this characterization procedure in predicting the material’s behavior in two mechanical tests.</text>

Objetivou-se avaliar o crescimento de mudas de cajueiro anão precoce em substratos irrigados com águas salinas e adição de biofertilizante bovino e cobertura com biomassa vegetal no Seridó Paraibano. O experimento foi instalado em delineamento em blocos casualizados, com três repetições, em arranjo fatorial 5 x 2 x 2, correspondente a cinco níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0,5; 3,5; 6,5; 9,5 e 12,5 dS m-1), no solo sem e com biofertilizante bovino, numa alíquota de 0,2 dm-3 por planta, sem e com cobertura morta com 3 cm de casca de arroz. As taxas de crescimento absoluto e relativo em altura, em diâmetro caulinar, número de folhas, área foliar, comprimento da raiz e fitomassa fresca do cajueiro anão precoce foram influenciados negativamente pela salinidade da água de irrigação. O biofertilizante mitigou os efeitos depressivos dos sais no crescimento absoluto das plantas irrigadas com água de salinidade até 3,5 dS m-1. O uso simultâneo do biofertilizante e cobertura morta foi eficiente na redução dos efeitos dos sais nas plantas irrigadas com águas de 3,5 e 6,5 dS m-1, promovendo aumento no número de folhas. O biofertilizante incrementou a fitomassa fresca total das plantas irrigadas com água de maior condutividade elétrica.Palavra-chave: agroecologia, biofertilizante, crescimento, fruticultura, salinidade. SEEDLING OF DWARF CASHEW BIOMETRY IRRIGATED WITH SALINE WATER AND SALT STRESS ATTENUATORS USE   ABSTRACTThe water salinity is a stress factor that alters the growth of fruit seedlings. This study aimed to evaluate the growth of dwarf cashew seedlings in substrates irrigated with saline water and bovine bio fertilizer addition and cover with vegetable biomass in Seridó, Paraiba. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with three replications in a factorial 5 x 2 x 2, corresponding to five salinity levels of water irrigation (0.5, 3.5, 6.5, 9.5 and 12.5 dS m - 1), soil with and without bovine bio fertilizers, a rate of 0.2 dm3 per plant, with and without biomass cover with 3 cm of rice husk coverage. The growth index of absolute and relative in height, in stem diameter, number of leave, leaf area, root length and fresh biomass of dwarf cashew negatively affected by salinity of water irrigation. The biofertilizer mitigated the depressing effects of the salts in the absolute growth of plants irrigated with saline water up to 3.5 dS m‑1. The simultaneous use of biofertilizer and mulch was effective in reducing the salt effect on plants irrigated with water of 3.5 and 6.5 dS m - 1, an increasing in the number of leaves.                 <text>Nanoparticles are small particles sized 1-100 nm, which have a large surface-to-volume ratio, allowing efficient adsorption of drugs, proteins, and other chemical compounds. Consequently, functionalized nanoparticles have potential diagnostic and therapeutic applications. A variety of nanoparticles have been studied, including those constructed from inorganic materials, biopolymers, and lipids. In this review, we focus on recent work targeting the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus that causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Understanding the interactions between coronavirus-specific proteins (such as the spike protein and its host cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) with different nanoparticles paves the way to the development of new therapeutics and diagnostics that are urgently needed for the fight against COVID-19, and indeed for related future viral threats that may emerge.</text>

                <text>La naranja es uno de los cultivos con mayor plantación en México y se visualiza un crecimiento para los próximos años. Derivado de las actividades de la agroindustria se producen residuos de cáscara de naranja, la cual por su alto contenido de pectina es apropiado para obtener bioplásticos, el cual es el objetivo principal de este trabajo. La extracción de la pectina se realizó mediante hidrólisis ácida, utilizando ácido cítrico al 0,1% y como agente plastificante glicerol a concentraciones de 3%, 4% y 5% para determinar la resistencia y rigidez óptima de la biopelícula. Se obtuvieron biopelículas flexibles, libres de poros y espacios intersticiales en la superficie del material. La biopelícula con composición de glicerol al 5% presentó características uniformes, con mejor flexibilidad y apariencia física en comparación con los de 3% y 4%. Mediante el análisis del FTIR se determinó que el polímero (pectina) mostró una banda característica de absorción del grupo -OH a 3300 cm-1, del grupo C-O a 1023 cm-1 y para el grupo COOH a 1732 cm-1 característica de un material biodegradable. De acuerdo con el análisis elemental de la biopelícula, se encontró que está compuesta por C, H, N y S, lo cual lo hace un material biodegradable no tóxico y amigable con el ambiente.</text>

                <text>La existencia de una organización social en los microorganismos, entre ellos las bacterias, es muy poco conocida entre el alumnado de los diferentes niveles de educación. Se tiene el preconcepto de que esta característica se presenta en organismos vivos de mayor complejidad. Las biopelículas constituyen una organización social donde una población bacteriana o una comunidad de diferentes microorganismos procariotas y eucariotas, permanecen adheridas a una matriz extracelular de polímeros sintetizados y excretados por sus propias células. Dentro de la biopelículas   podemos   encontrar   subpoblaciones   celulares   diferenciadas   metabólicamente   y   con   actividades diferentes. La formación de biopelículas bacterianas es la principal causa de las infecciones crónicas en el ser humano y otros mamíferos. Éstas también se forman en el medio ambiente, como por ejemplo en medios acuáticos,   donde   podemos   encontrar   las   que   se   constituyen   mediante   asociaciones   de   microorganismos fototróficos como las microalgas (cianobacterias, diatomeas y algas verdes). En el presente trabajo se propone una actividad o práctica de laboratorio escolar muy sencilla. En ésta se puede estudiar el efecto de una sola variable   sobre   el   desarrollo   y   diversidad   de   una   biopelícula   de   microorganismos   fototróficos.   La   variable mencionada es la longitud de onda de la luz visible que incide en un cultivo de dichos microorganismos. Utilizando filtros de diferentes colores (azul, verde, amarillo y rojo), se observaron resultados diferenciales.</text>

                <text>La búsqueda de nuevos medios de control de plagas como alternativa para reducir la contaminación de los ecosistemas forestales, constituye en la actualidad una tarea de primer orden. Este trabajo fue realizado en un área de estudio de la Estación Experimental Forestal Viñales, ubicada en el municipio de Pinar del Río, Cuba, y tiene como objetivo disponer de un método ecológico y eficiente de control de Hypsipyla grandella Zeller en plantaciones de Cedrela odorata L. (cedro rojo), para lo cual se utilizaron diferentes tratamientos (bioinsecticida obtenido a partir de la semilla de Azadirachta indica A. Juss [Nim], Dysiston G-10, poda y testigo) bajo un diseño de bloques completos al azar. El procesamiento estadístico se realizó para las siguientes variables: número de ataques, número de bifurcaciones, pérdida de altura y altura de la primera bifurcación con la prueba no paramétrica de Kruskal Wallis; cuando hubo diferencias significativas, se realizó la prueba Student-Newman-Keuls. Para las variables objeto de estudio los mejores tratamientos fueron el bioplaguicida del Nim y la poda, existiendo diferencias significativas respecto al testigo y al producto químico.                 <text>El presente artículo cita los nombres, ordenados por su principal acción plaguicida, de poco más de un centenar de plantas con algún tipo de potencial bioplaguicida en Costa Rica. Posteriormente se presenta la situación de la oferta y la demanda actual de estos productos, destacando las principales limitaciones que experimenta su desarrollo comercial, así como el potencial que posee el país en esta materia, basado en su extraordinaria biodiversidad. Además, se hace mención de las entidades involucradas en esta temática. Finalmente se hacen algunas consideraciones adicionales relacionadas con la toxicidad de estos productos y sobre la importancia de los conocimientos etnobotánicos en esta materia. Entre las especies de plantas que más se mencionan en la bibliografía consultada están Allium sativum, Annona reticulata, Azadirachta indica, Capsicum frutescens, Chenopodium Ambrosiodes, Gliricidia sepium, Quassia amara y Ryania speciosa. Se resalta el hecho de que hasta la fecha, tanto su uso artesanal como su desarrollo comercial son mínimos, en relación con el potencial existente en el país. Con excepción de dos productos, los pocos bioplaguicidas de origen vegetal que se comercializan son importados.</text>
