Agriculture generates 11.4 billion tons of biomass worldwide, including residues from crop production and industrial processing. Improper disposal of agricultural residues results in environmental pollution and the waste of valuable biomass resources. Management of agricultural waste is particularly suboptimal in developing countries where low added-value traditional practices to manage the residues are commonplace. A bioeconomy approach to better manage agricultural waste is to use renewable biological resources from land and sea to produce new materials and energy, allowing the development of bio-based value chains (BBVC). This study explored the potential of BBVC in the management of cacao pod husk (CPH), the primary residual biomass generated from the production of cacao in Colombia. Thus, a literature review on cacao pod husk (CPH) management strategies and a survey for farmers from Caldas State in Colombia between August and November of 2020 were performed to identify the potentials and limitations of BBVC in the management of CPH. Assessment of CPH management strategies suggested variable uses for CPH categorized in energy, food, and miscellaneous. Analysis of surveys indicated farmers are keen to implement strategies to better manage their agricultural waste, but that information is not available to them. Finally, an approach to develop a BBVC from cacao was proposed, which we plan to implement as a future research direction. We expect to impact the economic growth positively in the region with bio-based products in the market.

La nutrición es una prioridad de salud pública en Colombia. A pesar de esto el médico general y el especialista no están formados ni están preparados adecuadamente para afrontar la problemática nutricional de la población: alta prevalencia de desnutrición, sobrepeso, obesidad, inseguridad alimentaria en poblaciones vulnerables como los desplazados, niños y ancianos. A pesar de ser un país con alta tasa de enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles, tampoco están preparados para realizar consejería nutricional para su prevención y tratamiento. Una de las razones para esto, es la falta de definición del papel del médico en el ejercicio de la nutrición clínica. La educación en nutrición puede definirse como la introducción de los principios científicos de la nutrición en la práctica clínica de la medicina. La identificación de un núcleo central de conocimientos propios a la nutrición, el abordaje desde la interdisciplinariedad y el reconocimiento de un médico especialista en nutrición son aspectos claves en el desarrollo de la educación médica en nutrición. Se proponen estrategias claves para el desarrollo de esta disciplina y para fomentar la participación de los médicos en ella

La presente investigación tiene como propósito desarrollar un Plan Educativo para la Producción de Abono Orgánico mediante Microorganismos Eficientes dirigido a los docentes de la Escuela Nacional Bolivariana “José Vicente Unda” de la Parroquia Barinitas, Municipio Bolívar, Estado Barinas. La naturaleza de la investigación se enmarcada en la metodología cualitativa, bajo la modalidad de una investigación acción participativa, con un diseño de campo, bajo las siguientes fases: diagnóstico, planificación, ejecución y evaluación, apoyada con una entrevista a profundidad, aplicando un registro audiovisual cara a cara y guiones a través de preguntas generadoras, para responder dicha entrevista se contará con tres informantes claves. En cuanto a la técnica de análisis de información se elaborará el cuadro de categorías con el fin de poder realizar comparaciones y posibles contrastes. Entre las consideraciones finales se estima que la creación de actividades prácticas para la producción de abono orgánico mediante microorganismos eficientes representa un aporte de suma importancia para el fortalecimiento de los espacios socioproductivos en la institución, manteniendo la biodiversidad y disminuyendo el impacto negativo al ambiente.

En este artículo estudiamos el conflicto social vinculado a un megaproyecto minero en la zona de Íntag, en el Ecuador, desde una perspectiva que combina la geografía crítica y la ecología política. Analizamos en qué medida el conflicto, que inició hace dos décadas, ha dado lugar a cambios significativos en las territorialidades de la zona. Interpretamos la creación de la Reserva Comunitaria de Junín como un proceso de reterritorialización, liderado por comunidades aledañas al proyecto y amenazadas por la territorialidad que busca imponer capitales megamineros transnacionales. Evidenciamos la pertinencia del concepto de des-re-territorialización planteado por Haesbaert y mostramos que, en el marco de la conversión acelerada de territorios a la lógica del capital transnacional en América Latina, no necesariamente asistimos a una dinámica secuencial de “des” y luego “re” territorialización por un actor ajeno, nacional o transnacional. Más bien, esta conversión es a menudo un proceso contradictorio en el cual coexisten territorialidades antagónicas.

Los fenómenos meteorológicos son eventos que se desarrollan en la atmósfera y están asociados a un lugar específico. El objetivo del proyecto “Compartiendo la historia escondida del cambio climático en América Latina a través de las TIC”, es recuperar y georreferenciar las noticias sobre eventos meteorológicos registrados en la prensa escrita de los siglos XIX y primer mitad del XX, de los países involucrados en el proyecto: Colombia, Ecuador, México y Uruguay, y desarrollar modelos semánticos, transformando la información original recopilada para incrementar la interoperabilidad conforme a los principios de Linked Data y estándares del W3C. La terminología a modelar se obtiene por un análisis del dominio basado en el paradigma de Análisis de Dominio de Birger Hjorland. Se estudia la prensa digitalizada por las Bibliotecas Nacionales de los países intervinientes y el lenguaje empleado por sus instituciones meteorológicas nacionales y por la Organización Meteorológica Mundial. El análisis muestra un lenguaje uniforme, tanto respecto a la distribución geográfica, como tem poral, con poca sinonimia y escasa polisemia. Se aplica el método METHONTOLOGY para desarrollar una ontología de Eventos_Meteorológicos en el lenguaje OWL. Posibilita recuperar información no visible de las Bibliotecas Nacionales con técnicas de recuperación de información. Sus desarrollos son aplicables a otros documentos digitalizados y otras disciplinas.

Productivity and sustainability of agriculture in Colombia can be influenced positively through the use of biodiversity for the production of bioinoculants. They were analyzed in the medium and long term, the future scenarios generated by the regulations involved in the technological advancement of bio-products through the application of a Delphi survey, with the participation of 23 experts in bio-products, taking into account the three dimensions sustainable development. Based on this study, it was found that 65% of the experts believe that the impact of innovation and technological development of the use of bio- products in agricultural production, has a high economic impact with a significant level of agreement (≥0.05). Additionally, 65% selected as the best scenario, in which conditions that promote greater development, access and application of bio-products, so that the rate of adoption of technology is increased by the producers to make. In conclusion, beyond the level of technological development is necessary to revise the legislative process for the marketing of bio-products, it was clear that the future success of the industry in the production of biological products depend on the management of innovative enterprises, efficient marketing thereof, education and transfer to producers and the progress of the investigation.

Los bioinoculantes son producidos principalmente a partir de bacterias promotoras de crecimiento vegetal. Estos microorganismos agrupan diferentes géneros, con capacidad de estimular e incrementar el crecimiento, la productividad vegetal y controlar otros organismos. El uso de este tipo de microorganismos, en la agricultura colombiana, tiene potencial para generar transformaciones importantes en los sistemas productivos. En este trabajo, la industria de bioinsumos en Colombia fue caracterizada a partir de tres parámetros i. el análisis de los registros ante el Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario - ICA, ii. las patentes solicitadas ante la Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio - SIC y, iii. la solicitud de acceso a recurso genético, desde el 2004 hasta el año 2011 ante el Ministerio de Ambiente y desarrollo sostenible -MADS. En Colombia, se encontraron 111 registros de bioinsumos, destinados, principalmente, a cultivos ornamentales 24,7%, hortalizas 16,3% y cereales 13,2%. A nivel de patentes, se identificaron 13, de las cuales, 9 se encuentran dentro de la Clasificación Internacional de Patentes - IPC - reconocidas por la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económicos -OCDE- . La base de datos de acceso a recurso genético del MADS permitió identificar 16 solicitudes. Sólo un microorganismo (Bacillus thuringiensis) tuvo registro en las tres instituciones. El estudio permitió concluir que el desarrollo de bioinsumos en Colombia es incipiente, en el ejercicio de estimular investigación para el uso de la biodiversidad microbiana, así como los procesos de registro de patentes, alrededor de los procesos de producción.

Los biosólidos, son materiales orgánicos, provenientes del tratamiento de aguas residuales domésticas e industriales y su disposición final es uno de los principales problemas. El depósito en rellenos sanitarios, la incineración y la aplicación en suelos, son los principales métodos de disposición; los dos primeros son costosos, mientras que el último ha tenido aceptación debido a que puede ser usado como abono orgánico en cultivos y mejorar la fertilidad de suelos degradados, pero se pueden generar problemas de contaminación. En este estudio se evaluó el efecto de la aplicación de biosólidos en el crecimiento de Jacaranda mimosifolia (Gualanday) y en las condiciones físicas y químicas de un suelo degradado. En invernadero, se sembraron plántulas, utilizando un diseño completamente al azar con cuatro tratamientos y diez repeticiones. Los tratamientos correspondieron a contenidos de materia orgánica en la mezcla suelo-biosólido de 0 %, 2 %, 4 % y 8 %. Se muestreó mensualmente la sobrevivencia, altura, diámetro del tallo y número de hojas, y la biomasa seca al final del experimento. Se realizaron análisis físicos y químicos del suelo, al inicio del estudio y a los tres meses. Los análisis químicos incluyeron pH, carbono orgánico oxidable, Al, Ca, Mg, K, CICE, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, P, S, B, NO3-, NH4+; y los análisis físicos estabilidad de agregados, densidad aparente, densidad real y retención de humedad. El análisis estadístico se realizó entre tratamientos por cada mes, mediante análisis de varianza y pruebas de comparación de medias (Duncan, 95 % nivel de confianza). Los tratamientos con 4 % y 8 % de materia orgánica, afectaron negativamente el crecimiento de J. mimosifolia, debido posiblemente a la alta concentración de nutrientes y metales pesados hallados en el suelo, lo que pudo generar toxicidad, antagonismo y/o sinergismo. Las condiciones físicas se favorecieron al adicionar biosólidos, aumentándose la estabilidad de agregados y la retención de humedad, y disminuyéndose la densidad aparente y densidad real.The biosolids are organic materials, derived from wastewater treatment of domestic and industrial sewage. Their deposit in sanitary fillers, the incineration and land application are the main methods of dispose; the first two methods are expensive, while the last one, is gaining acceptance, because the biosolids are a resource that can be used as supplementary organic fertilizer. Furthermore, land application of biosolids can help to improve declined soil fertility in degraded soils, but it can be generated contamination problems. The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of biosolids application on the growth of Jacaranda mimosifolia (Gualanday) and the changes on physical and chemical conditions of a degraded soil. This arboreal specie was planted in a degraded soil amended with biosolids, and was grown in a greenhouse. The treatments corresponded to contents of organic matter in the mixture (soil-biosolid) of 0 %, 2 %, 4 % and 8 %, in a completely randomized design with four treatments and ten replications. Monthly samplings were realized to get information about the variables: survival, height and diameter of stem, and number of leaves. The dry biomass was evaluated at the end of the study. The physical and chemical analyses were made at the beginning of the experiment and three months later. The chemical analyses included pH, oxidable organic carbon, Al, Ca, Mg, K, CICE, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, P, S, B, NO3-, NH4+, and the physical analyses included aggregate stability, bulk density, real density and water retention. The statistical analysis between treatments was realized every month, by analysis of variance and Duncan's multiple range test, using a 95 % confidence level. The treatment with a 2 % of organic matter was not affected the plant growth and was similar with the untreated control. The treatments with a 4 % and 8 % of organic matter caused a lower survival, a lower growth in height, diameter, and lesser number of leaves and a lower production of biomass. The high concentration of nutrients found on the soil, probably generated toxicity, antagonism and/or synergism problems. The physical soil properties were favored with the addition of biosolids, possibly for its organic matter contents, appearing an increase in the aggregate stability and the humidity retention, and a diminution of the bulk density and the real density.

La sabaleta Brycon henni, es un pez nativo del occidente colombiano importante para la seguridad alimentaria de las poblaciones ribereñas y para la pesca deportiva por sus característica combativas. El desarrollarse entre los 18 y 28ºC la convierte en una especie de cultivo promisoria. Un estudio citogenético a partir de células branquiales indicó diferentes complementos cromosómicos. Este trabajo aplicó la técnica de cultivo de linfocitos a muestras de sangre de adultos. Las muestras de sangre total fueron sembradas en 4 ml de medio de cultivo Ham-F12, suplementado con 0.5 ml de Suero Fetal Bovino y 0.7 ml del mitógeno Fitohemaglutinina M (Gibco®) durante 96 hr a 28ºC; 1.5 hr antes de la cosecha agregamos 100µl de Colcemid al 10% como factor antimitótico. Cada cultivo se incubó con 10 ml de solución hipotónica KCl 0.56% por 24 min a 37ºC, para continuar con tres fijaciones sucesivas, centrifugaciones y tinción Giemsa al 5%. Las mejores metafases fueron fotografiadas en microscopio, correspondientes a 6 machos y 8 hembras, indicando un número diploide de 50 cromosomas, clasificados en Metacéntricos (26M), Submetacéntricos (16SM) y Subtelocéntricos (8ST), para un número fundamental (NF) de 100 brazos. La tendencia evolutiva hallada fue de tipo B; no se encontraron cromosomas supernumerarios pero sí un primer par de cromosomas metacéntricos grandes, considerado marcador para el género Brycon, no determinante de heteromorfismo sexual. Estos resultados coinciden con los demás bricónidos investigados, en donde se podría considerar un ancestro común con un número cromosómico básico y cariotipos simétricos.Cytogenetic characterization of the neotropical fish Brycon henni (Pisces: Characidae). Brycon henni, is a native fish from Western Colombia is important as food and in sport fishing, and could be cultured in waters between 18 and 28ºC. A previous cytogenetic study in branchial cells indicated different chromosomal complements. Total blood samples were seeded in 4 ml Ham-F12 culture medium, supplemented with 0.5 ml Bovine Fetal Serum and 0.7 ml Phyitohemaglutinin M (Gibco®) during 96 hr at 28ºC; an antimitotic factor (100µl Colcemid® 10%) was added. Cells were incubated in 10 ml KCl hypotonic solution (0.56%) for 24 min at 37ºC, fixed in methanol; acetic acid (3: 1) three times, separated by centrifugations, extended drip, and the chromosomes slides were stained with 5% Giemsa (5%). The best metaphases (6 males and 8 females) were photographed. There was a diploid number of 50 chromosomes: Metacentrics (26M), Submetacentrics (16SM) and Subtelocentrics (8ST). The fundamental number is 100 arms. The evolutionary tendency is type B with no supernumerary chromosomes; a first pair of big metacentric chromosomes is characteristic for Brycon, while no chromosomic sexual heteromorfism was detected.
