The objective was to evaluate association between standardized simple visual lung damage CT score (vldCTs) at admission, which does not require any software, and 30-day mortality. In a single-center prospective cohort of COVID-19 patients included during 4 weeks, the presence and extent of ground glass opacities(GGO), consolidation opacities, or both of them were visually assessed in each of the 5 lung lobes (score from 0 to 4 per lobe depending on the percentage and out of 20 per patient = vldCTs) after the first chest CT performed to detect COVID-19 pneumonia. Among 210 confirmed COVID-19 patients, the number of survivors and non-survivors was 162 (77%) and 48 (23%), respectively at 30 days. vldCTs was significantly higher in non-survivors, and the AUC of vldCTs to distinguish survivors and non-survivors was 0.72 (95%CI 0.628-0.807, p < 0.001); the best cut-off vldCTs value was 7. During follow-up, significant differences in discharges and 30-day mortality were observed between patients with vldCTs ≥ 7 versus vldCTs < 7: (98 [85.2%] vs 49 [51.6%]; p < 0.001 and 36 [37.9%] vs 12 [12.4%]; p < 0.001, respectively. The 30-day mortality increased if vldCTs ≥ 7 (HR, 3.16 (1.50-6.43); p = 0.001), independent of age, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation levels, and comorbidities at admission. By using chest CT in COVID-19 patients, extensive lung damage can be visually assessed with a score related to 30-day mortality independent of conventional risk factors of the disease. • In non-selected COVID-19 patients included prospectively during 4 weeks, the extent of ground glass opacities(GGO) and consolidation opacities evaluated by a simple visual score was related to 30-day mortality independent of age, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation levels, comorbidities, and hs-troponin I level at admission. • This severity score should be incorporated into risk stratification algorithms and in structured chest CT reports requiring a standardized reading by radiologists in case of COVID-19. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar o que mudou na Comunidade Quilombola e nas famílias após as atividades extensionistas, com foco na utilização de técnicas apropriadas visando à autossuficiência na produção de alimentos para a geração de receita e renda. A execução das ações à Comunidade Quilombola, da região de Dourados-MS, iniciou em agosto de 2007. Foram ministradas palestras, mini-cursos e atividades no campo mostrando na prática como proceder à frente às novas alternativas de produção, havendo participação média de 90% dos pequenos produtores envolvidos. Entretanto, alguns (10% das famílias) apresentaram dúvidas sobre o sucesso das atividades propostas, o que é normal dentro de um processo de transferências de tecnologias. Mas, de forma geral, observou-se o interesse na aceitação dos novos modelos de produção pelos produtores, promovendo melhores desempenhos produtivos e melhoria na qualidade alimentar e até aumento da renda familiar. As visitas técnicas também foram essenciais no incentivo das famílias em produzir e reforçar a importância da terra na geração de renda. Detectou-se a importância da continuidade dos trabalhos por meio da melhoria da produção agrícola e/ou animal, geração e aprimoramento dos conhecimentos de produção, melhoria da renda e da qualidade de vida local. Tais ações estão voltadas ao fortalecimento da produção animal e vegetal, alicerçadas em princípios de sustentabilidade para a melhoria da qualidade alimentar e para o aumento da renda familiar. Outra preocupação constante é valorizar o trabalho de tal comunidade, envolvido por seu modo de vida e hábitos tradicionais. As atividades foram desenvolvidas no período de dezembro de 2009 a março de 2011, seguindo um cronograma proposto que envolveu a horticultura orgânica e a criação de aves caipiras, utilizando-se de recursos materiais como quadro branco, data show e folders para sua execução. Houve participação de 70% dos quilombolas envolvidos. Com o desenvolvimento das ações na comunidade, constatou-se o aumento significativo na qualidade alimentar dos produtores e a ampliação da comercialização do excedente de produção nas feiras da Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados (UFGD) e de Dourados. Detectou-se a importância dos trabalhos por meio da melhoria da produção agrícola e/ou animal local, do aprimoramento dos conhecimentos de produção pelos próprios produtores e do aumento da renda das famílias.
