Informações sobre a eficiência de uso dos nutrientes aplicados na adubação orgânica são ainda escassas. As recuperações aparentes dos nutrientes aplicados como esterco bovino e como restos de Egeria densa foram comparadas. Grande massa de egéria é retirada dos lagos do sistema hidrelétrico de Paulo Afonso e seu descarte tem sido problemático. Foram feitos cinco plantios consecutivos de milho, por 45 dias cada, em casa de vegetação, após aplicação única de doses equivalentes a 0, 10, 20, 30 e 40 Mg ha-1 de matéria seca. As adições de egéria e de esterco bovino aumentaram as quantidades de fitomassa seca e os conteúdos de N, P e K das plantas, de forma proporcional às doses aplicadas, porém o efeito da egéria foi 3 a 10 vezes maior que o do esterco, exceto quanto ao P, que foi semelhante. Os incrementos com a egéria começaram desde o primeiro plantio, e os do esterco, só no terceiro. No quinto plantio, ambos foram muito pequenos. A eficiência de recuperação dos nutrientes aplicados foi maior quando se utilizaram restos de egéria (N, 34-39 e 7-22 %; P, 47-103 e 9-11 %; e K, 55-76 e 26-34 %, respectivamente), mas, mesmo com a egéria, sobraram nutrientes no solo, que foram absorvidos em pequena proporção no quinto plantio. A liberação de nutrientes dos restos de egéria é mais rápida que no esterco bovino, e seu aproveitamento como adubo orgânico é recomendável.To date, information on the efficiency of nutrients applied as organic fertilizers is scarce. Apparent recovery of nutrients applied as cattle manure or as anacharis (Egeria densa) residues were compared. Large masses of anacharis are removed from the reservoirs of the Paulo Afonso hydroelectric power plant and the disposal has been problematic. A pot experiment was carried out with five consecutive corn crops of 45 days each, planted after a single dry matter application (doses of 0, 10 20, 30 and 40 Mg ha-1). Incorporations of anacharis and manure resulted in increased biomass yields and in N, P and K contents proportional to the applied doses. However, the effects of anacharis were 3-10 times higher than those of manure, except for the P content, which was similar. Gains in biomass with anacharis fertilization were observed during the first crop, while those of manure were observed only in the third crop. In the fifth crop the effects of both sources were small. The nutrient recovery was also higher for anacharis than for manure (N, 34-39 % and 7-22 %; P, 47-103 % and 9-11 %; K, 55-76 % and 26-34 %, respectively). But, for both fertilization types part of the nutrients remained in the soil and only a small proportion was taken up in the last crop. Anacharis supplies more nutrients and at a faster rate than manure and its use as organic fertilizer is worthwhile.

No therapeutics or vaccines currently exist for human coronaviruses (HCoVs). The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) epidemic in 2002-2003, and the recent emergence of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in April 2012, emphasize the high probability of future zoonotic HCoV emergence causing severe and lethal human disease. Additionally, the resistance of SARS-CoV to ribavirin (RBV) demonstrates the need to define new targets for inhibition of CoV replication. CoVs express a 3'-to-5' exoribonuclease in nonstructural protein 14 (nsp14-ExoN) that is required for high-fidelity replication and is conserved across the CoV family. All genetic and biochemical data support the hypothesis that nsp14-ExoN has an RNA proofreading function. Thus, we hypothesized that ExoN is responsible for CoV resistance to RNA mutagens. We demonstrate that while wild-type (ExoN+) CoVs were resistant to RBV and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), CoVs lacking ExoN activity (ExoN-) were up to 300-fold more sensitive. While the primary antiviral activity of RBV against CoVs was not mutagenesis, ExoN- CoVs treated with 5-FU demonstrated both enhanced sensitivity during multi-cycle replication, as well as decreased specific infectivity, consistent with 5-FU functioning as a mutagen. Comparison of full-genome next-generation sequencing of 5-FU treated SARS-CoV populations revealed a 16-fold increase in the number of mutations within the ExoN- population as compared to ExoN+. Ninety percent of these mutations represented A:G and U:C transitions, consistent with 5-FU incorporation during RNA synthesis. Together our results constitute direct evidence that CoV ExoN activity provides a critical proofreading function during virus replication. Furthermore, these studies identify ExoN as the first viral protein distinct from the RdRp that determines the sensitivity of RNA viruses to mutagens. Finally, our results show the importance of ExoN as a target for inhibition, and suggest that small-molecule inhibitors of ExoN activity could be potential pan-CoV therapeutics in combination with RBV or RNA mutagens.

Introduction: The worldwide spread of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV2) has prompted numerous countries to restrict public life. Related measures, such as limits on social gatherings, business closures, or lockdowns, are expected to considerably reduce the individual opportunities to move outside the home. As physical activity (PA) and sport participation significantly contribute to health, this study has two objectives. The objectives of this study are to assess changes in PA and well-being since the coronavirus outbreak in affected countries. Additionally, we will evaluate the impact of digital home-based exercise programs on PA as well as physical and mental health outcomes.Method: A multinational network trial will be conducted with three planned phases (A, B, and C). Part A consists of administering a structured survey. It investigates changes in PA levels and health during the coronavirus outbreak and measures the preferences of the participants regarding online training programs. Part B is a two-armed randomized-controlled trial. Participants assigned to the intervention group (IG) will complete a digital 4-week home exercise training (live streaming via internet) guided by the survey results on content and time of program. The control group (CG) will not receive the program. Part C is 4-week access of both CG and IG to a digital archive of pre-recorded workouts from Part B. Similar to Part A, questionnaires will be used in both Part B and C to estimate the effects of exercise on measures of mental and physical health.Results and Discussion: The ASAP project will provide valuable insights into the importance of PA during a global pandemic. Our initial survey is the first to determine how governmental confinement measures impact bodily and mental well-being. Based on the results, the intervention studies will be unique to address health problems potentially arising from losses in PA. If proven effective, the newly developed telehealth programs could become a significant and easy-to-distribute factor in combating PA decreases. Results of the study may hence guide policy makers on methods to maintain PA and health when being forced to restrict public life.Study Register: DRKS00021273.

Bromelia laciniosa and Encholirium spectabile (Bromeliaceae) have vernacular names as macambira. Both species are restricted to the Northeast of Brazil, mainly in the Caatinga domain or in ecotonal regions with the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado. Macambira species have been reported for different uses in rural communities, ranging from ornamental plants, hedges, human and animal food, medicinal application, and raw material to manufacture handicrafts and utensils, besides ecological interaction with different animals. This study aims to present the taxonomic description, distribution data, habitat, phenology, taxonomic comments, and potential uses of B. laciniosa and E. spectabile. Bromelia laciniosa belonging to the subfamily Bromelioideae and Encholirium spectabile belongs to the subfamily Pitcairnioideae. Both species are xerophilous; i.e, they have morphological and physiological structures adapted to the semiarid climate. Bromelia laciniosa is a terrestrial species and can also inhabit rocky outcrops where organic matter is found, whereas Encholirium spectabile is a strictly rupicolous species. Given the importance of the species to the Northeast of Brazil, macambiras are also reported in visual arts, literary works, song lyrics, family surnames, nicknames, names of municipality, villages, riverside, waterfalls, and a scientific journal.

Este trabalho objetiva analisar como ocorreu o processo de formação de um sindicalismo específico de agricultores familiares na região Sul do Brasil. Por meio de análise documental e de entrevistas com lideranças e assessores sindicais busca-se resgatar a trajetória do novo sindicalismo rural no Sul. Parte-se de um debate no setor rural da CUT nos anos de 1980 e início dos 1990 sobre a possibilidade de formação de sindicatos específicos de pequenos produtores e de assalariados rurais, analisa-se como esse debate foi levado para dentro da CONTAG no processo de unificação formal do sindicalismo dos trabalhadores rurais em meados da década de 1990, os conflitos de posições gerados nesta nova condição e a formação de uma dissidência no Sul que levou a construção de um sindicalismo de agricultores familiares por meio da fundação da FETRAF-Sul em 2001. Da análise do campo de forças no sindicalismo, procura-se compreender como foi sendo gestada a possibilidade de formação, primeiramente, de um movimento pela afirmação social e política da agricultura familiar na região Sul e, posteriormente, de uma estrutura sindical específica de agricultores familiares no país, oportunizando a criação de novos canais de manifestação de demandas e identidades e de reconhecimento social.

Resumo Este artigo analisa as mudanças na estrutura sindical dos trabalhadores rurais nas últimas décadas, marcadas pela emergência de novas identidades políticas que lutam pelo reconhecimento de sua diversidade e pela constituição de formas próprias de representação. Desde os anos 1980 têm ocorrido experiências iniciais de organizações de assalariados e pequenos agricultores por fora dos canais sindicais estabelecidos. No entanto, foi nos primeiros anos do século XXI que formou-se uma organização sindical própria de agricultores familiares que passou a competir com o sindicalismo da Confederação Nacional dos Trabalhadores na Agricultura (Contag) e, mais recentemente, a formação de uma Confederação Nacional de Assalariados Rurais (Contar), como representante exclusiva dos assalariados rurais. O artigo explora essas mudanças recentes na representação dos trabalhadores do campo, os conflitos de posição gerados e suas relações com o Estado.

The process of the family farmers' recognition as individuals with rights demonstrates having their first roots, in spite of being recent, if compared to the history of the Brazilian rural syndicalism, still in the constitution of the labor-syndical legislation in 1930. Therefore, seeking to explore that process the present paper has as objective to analyze the family farmers' emergence as individuals of rights in the contemporary Brazilian society, analyzing the processes of formation of the rural syndicalism and the expansion of the labor law for the rural workers as a form of accomplishment of a 'regulated citizenship' until the decade of 1970; the urge to the official syndicalism, the structuring of a 'new syndicalism' and the new social actors' appearance in the field, which made possible the enlargement of the citizenship spaces in the period of re-democratization in Brazil; the 'crisis' of the new syndicalism, the creation of new syndical structures 'apart' of the official structure (syndicalism of the family agriculture) and the emergency of the 'family farmers' as subject of rights in the recent periodO processo de reconhecimento dos agricultores familiares como sujeitos de direitos apesar de ser recente quando pensado a partir da trajetória do sindicalismo rural brasileiro demonstra ter suas primeiras raízes ainda na constituição da legislação trabalhista-sindical dos anos de 1930. Visando explorar esse processo o artigo tem por objetivo analisar a emergência dos agricultores familiares como sujeitos de direitos na sociedade brasileira contemporânea. Analisa-se os processos de formação do sindicalismo rural e de expansão da legislação trabalhista para os trabalhadores rurais como forma de realização de uma 'cidadania regulada' até a década de 1970; o questionamento do sindicalismo oficial, a estruturação de um 'novo sindicalismo' e a emergência de novos atores sociais no campo, que possibilitaram a ampliação dos espaços de cidadania no período de redemocratização do Brasil; a 'crise' do novo sindicalismo, a criação de novas estruturas sindicais 'por fora' da estrutura oficial (sindicalismo da agricultura familiar) e a emergência dos 'agricultores familiares' como sujeitos de direitos no período recente

ResumoAs preocupações ambientais têm influenciado os projetos políticos e a construção das pautas das organizações de agricultores familiares. O objetivo deste estudo é analisar como estas preocupações foram assimiladas pela Federação dos Trabalhadores na Agricultura Familiar da região Sul (FETRAF-Sul), na região Sul do Brasil. Com base em pesquisa documental e entrevistas com lideranças de agricultores fez-se uma leitura sobre o processo de construção da pauta ambiental no sindicalismo. Desde meados da década de 1980, o tema ambiental vem se fazendo presente nas preocupações sindicais, entretanto, a forma como ele vem sendo entendido muda ao longo dos anos. Se em um primeiro momento tendia a ser associado com as consequências negativas da modernização da agricultura, no período mais recente o tema ambiental vem sendo colocado no centro do projeto de agricultura do sindicalismo e passa a fomentar uma possível positivação do modelo de produzir da agricultura familiar.
