The objective of this work was to evaluate the consequences of adopting a consortium system on weed suppression and consequent corn crop growth and yield. The treatments consisted of combinations of five levels of the factor grass forages (Brachiaria decumbens, Brachiaria brizantha, Panicum maximum, corn without forage and with weed competition and hand-weeded corn) and three levels of the factor weeds (Ipomoea grandifolia, Amaranthus hybridus and Digitaria horizontalis).Leaf area (cm² per plant), dry mass (g per plant) and yield (t ha-1) obtained by the corn crop were evaluated in each treatment. Although also causing yield reductions, corn crop consortium with the grass forages was found to attenuate the losses occurring when the culture is under exclusive competition, thus ensuring a greater soil dynamism, use and protection. The overall conclusion was that this work showed the viability of applying this consortium system, especially within the context of family farming.</text>

<text>Spatial variations of hermatypic coral assemblages were evaluated at five sites in Cayos Cochinos Archipelago, Honduras, in February 2008. Richness and coverage of corals and other benthic morpho-functional groups were estimated using 56 videotransects. Topographic complexity and depth were also measured by transect. Twenty-two coral taxa were recorded for Cayos Cochinos. Total species richness was similar (16 and 17 taxa) at all sites, whereas species richness by transect was different among sites (6-12 taxa). Shannon diversity showed weak differences among sites (1.46-2.13), whereas Pielou evenness was not different among sites. Simpson dominance was low with weak differences among sites (0.15-0.27). The total cover of hermatypic coral was 16.5% at Roatan Bank, 10.5% at Salamandinga, 9.7% at Punta Pelicanos, 7.6% at La Grupera, and 6.9% at Mariposales. The ANOSIM revealed assemblages of different corals between sites, except between La Grupera, Punta Pelicanos, and Salamandinga. The NMDS associated La Grupera, Punta Pelicanos, and Salamandinga given the greater contribution of Porites astreoides, Agaricia agaricites, and Montastraea annularis; whereas the NMDS differentiated Mariposales and Roatan Bank, which had more dissimilar assemblages with a greater predominance of Montastraea cavernosa, Agaricia agaricites, and Diploria labyrinthiformis. According to the BIO-ENV method, coral composition and abundance were correlated with the cover of articulated calcareous algae, sandy substrate, total hermatypic corals, rocky-calcareous substrate, fleshy macroalgae, and hydrocorals. In general, the differences found in the coral assemblages of Cayos Cochinos could be due to geomorphological characteristics as well as the effects of human activities in the study area.

Esto permitiría integrar conceptos y resolver contradicciones en áreas de la biología funcional y evolutiva ABSTRACT The epigenetic concept, frequently attributed to Corad Waddington (1905-1975), has been closely related to a fight in the intellectual field for more than two thousand years. Postulated by Aristotle under the name of epigenesis, as opposed to the biological preformationists conception of Democritus, it has varied in content and scope in accordance with the development of scientific knowledge. Today, epigenetics is presented in the literature as a polisemic concept with low conceptual integration. However, the wide range of biological phenomena covered and the extent of scientific production involved demand a new integrated approach to ecology, evolution and development (eco-evo-devo). In this sense, it is proposed to conceptualize epigenetics from an adaptive epigenetic perspective, which involves the inclusion of transgenerational epigenetic or Darwinian mechanisms, depending on the level of integration to be analyzed. This would allow to integrate concepts and solve contradictions in areas of functional and evolutionary biology.</text>

<text>I summarize what is known about the mediterranean ecosystem represented in San Carlos de Apoquindo (33º 23' S, 70º 31' W), a rugged area of 835 ha located ca. 20 km east of downtown Santiago on the Andean foothills. This site attracted numerous researchers during 1976-1990 because of its proximity to Santiago and its relatively protected status. I review the literature, and provide unpublished information on this site. A total of 132 literature entries describe the ecology of San Carlos de Apoquindo, in about 30 topics. The shrub and herbaceous vegetation have been well studied, but little is known about the respective seed banks. Among animals, small mammals, rabbits, and avian and mammalian predators are the best investigated, whereas epigean arthropods, amphibians, lizards, snakes, passerine birds, and scavengers of all types are the least studied. Thematically, interactions from plant/climate, to plant/soil, to plant/herbivore, to herbivore/predator interactions, and to decomposition of animal carcasses, have been addressed. But gross inequalities exist on the thoroughness with which each topic has been researched. The best studied aspects deal with plant/herbivore and herbivore/predator interactions. Up to now, no description existed of soils and climate in the area, which I present in this paper. Taking advantage of the long-term aspect of the research at the site, I highlight temporal variation patterns. And because of the different landscape aspects present at the site, I also highlight data that depict such spatial variability. In general, San Carlos de Apoquindo has contributed greatly to the understanding of ecological processes in central Chile.

San Carlos de Apoquindo, a piedemont area to the east of Santiago city, is a site with 30 years of data on vertebrates. Using LANDSAT satellite imagery for the years 1975, 1989 and 2003, we studied the spatio-temporal trajectory of land use and its putative effects on vegetation, small mammals and raptors. On the basis of a landscape-level analysis, we interpreted long-term trends in the abundance of small mammals and in the diet of raptors. Satellite imagery reveals an accelerated expansion of the urban area in detriment of agricultural land and native scrubland. Native mammal species of small and medium size do not display large variation of abundance during the 30 years study period, but larger-sized native mammals show reduced population numbers. The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) currently is among the most abundant mammal species in the area, and seems to be favored by the temporal transition from dense to sparse scrubland. In the diets of Chilean Eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus) and of native Harris’ Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) there is a marked decrease of the native rodent prey Octodon degus and a concomitant increase of the exotic prey Oryctolagus cuniculus. In addition, there is a decreasing trend in richness and abundance of raptors throughout the study period, which is associated to both urban expansion and scrubland fragmentation and reduction. We propose that urban encroachment, together with areal reduction and fragmentation of native scrubland, has resulted in a decrease of the Octodon degus population, and in its subsequent decrease in the diet of both native eagles and hawks, which in turn has determined increased predation on exotic rabbits.</text>
