In order to describe manifestations from patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), sociodemographic variables such as, previous medical history, clinical and radiological manifestations, treatments and evolution of patients were evaluated. This took place from March 6th to 25th, 2020, in the “Edgardo Rebagliati Martins” National Hospital in Lima. Seventeen patients were registered: 76% were male, with an average age of 53.5 years (range 25-94); 23.5% had returned from abroad; 41.2% were referred from other health facilities; 41.2% were admitted to mechanical ventilation; 29.4% (5 patients) died. The risk factors detected were: advanced age, arterial hypertension and obesity. The main symptoms detected were: cough, fever and dyspnea. Frequent laboratory findings were: elevated C-reactive protein and lymphopenia. The predominant radiological presentation was bilateral interstitial lung infiltrate. A first experience in the management of patients diagnosed with severe COVID-19 in Peru is reported.

Sigara (Tropocorixa) jensenhaarupi Jaczewski is the smallest species of the subgenus ranging from 4.2-4.7 mm, and it is characterized by the absence of a strigil, the small and narrow genital capsule with a short hypandrium in males, and the shape of the abdominal tergite VII in females. This species is endemic to the Patagonian subregion (Andean region) in Argentina. A monthly sampling study was performed during a year in northern Mendoza, and additional material was collected in southern Mendoza, more precisely from Bañado Carilauquen in the Llancanelo Lake Reserve (Malargüe Department). Since little is known about the ecological requirements of S. (T.) jensenhaarupi, herein we describe its habitat, the environmental conditions and its association with other macroinvertebrates. Also, we provide a morphological description of larval stages, and provide new records of this species.Sigara (Tropocorixa) jensenhaarupi Jaczewski es la especie más pequeña del subgénero (4.2-4.7 mm), y se caracteriza por la ausencia de estrigilo, la cápsula genital masculina pequeña y angosta con el hipandro corto, y la forma característica del tergito abdominal VII en las hembras. Esta especie es endémica de la subregión Patagónica (región Andina) en Argentina. Se realizaron muestreos mensuales durante un año en el norte de la provincia de Mendoza, material adicional fue recolectado en el sur de la provincia, más precisamente en el Bañado Carilauquen en la Reserva Laguna Llancanelo (Departamento de Malargüe). Poco se conoce acerca de los requerimientos ecológicos de S. (T.) jensenhaarupi, por lo que en este trabajo describimos su hábitat, las condiciones ambientales y su asociación con otros macroinvertebrados. Además, describimos los estadios larvales y damos nuevos registros de esta especie.

Descriptions of Macrostylis antennamagna sp. n. and Macrostylis uniformis sp. n. are presented with notes on intraspecific variability and sexual dimorphism. Macrostylis uniformis sp. n. showes differences to Macrostylis antennamagna sp. n. in the length of the antenna 2, the shape of the pleotelson and length of uropods. The genus Desmostylis Brandt, 1992 (formerly including the two species Desmostylis obscurus Brandt, 1992 and Desmostylis gerdesi Brandt, 2002) is synonymised with the genus Macrostylis. Based on type material additional remarks and additions to the original descriptions are provided for both species. Results lead to following nomenclatorial changes: Macrostylis obscurus (Brandt, 1992), comb. n. and Macrostylis gerdesi (Brandt, 2002), comb. n. A setal nomenclature is proposed and the diagnosis for the family is revised.

Abstract The descriptive distribution and phylogeny of feline coronaviruses (FCoVs) were studied in cats suspected of having feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) in Malaysia. Ascitic fluids and/or biopsy samples were subjected to a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) targeted for a conserved region of 3'untranslated region (3'UTR) of the FCoV genome. Eighty nine percent of the sampled animals were positive for the presence of FCoV. Among the FCoV positive cats, 80% of cats were males and 64% were below 2 years of age. The FCoV positive cases included 56% domestic short hair (DSH), 40% Persian, and 4% Siamese cats. The nucleotide sequences of 10 selected amplified products from FIP cases were determined. The sequence comparison revealed that the field isolates had 96% homology with a few point mutations. The extent of homology decreased to 93% when compared with reference strains. The overall branching pattern of phylogenetic tree showed two distinct clusters, where all Malaysian isolates fall into one main genetic cluster. These findings provided the first genetic information of FCoV in Malaysia.

This paper reviews several geographic mapping efforts of SARS on the Internet that employ a variety of techniques like choropleth rendering, graduated circles, graduated pie charts, buffering, overlay analysis and animation. The aim of these mapping services is to educate the public (especially travellers to potentially at-risk areas) and assist public health authorities in analysing the spatial and temporal trends and patterns of SARS and in assessing/revising current control measures.

El objetivo del estudio fue estimar las áreas con aptitud ambiental (AA) y establecer los descriptores ecológicos para Leucaena leucocephala, con el software MaxEnt con base en 19 variables bioclimáticas y una edáfica; se modeló el nicho de distribución para los períodos 1960-1990, 2041-2060 y 2061-2080. Los datos climáticos se obtuvieron del portal de Global Climate Data de WorldClim y se procesaron mediante imágenes ráster y ascii con una resolución de 30 segundos de arco. Para las climatologías futuras se consideró el modelo de circulación general (MCG): GFDL-CM3 con dos trayectorias representativas de concentración de gases efecto invernadero (rcp 4.5 y rcp 8.5). Los resultados mostraron que para el periodo 1960-1990, la superficie con AA para la especie fue de 251 134 km², y se ubica en las zonas costeras del Golfo de México, Sierra Madre Oriental, Occidental y del Sur, Sierra Norte de Puebla, Istmo de Tehuantepec y parte de la Península de Yucatán; las variables ambientales que más contribuyeron a explicar la distribución de L. leucocephala fueron el fotoperiodo, la precipitación del mes más húmedo, temperatura media del mes más frío, precipitación acumulada de mayo a octubre y la temperatura media de noviembre a abril. Respecto a los escenarios futuros, las proyecciones auguran un incremento en la superficie con AA, de 51 a 72 % para los rcp 8.5 y 4.5, respectivamente. En lo referente a los descriptores ecológicos, los intervalos ambientales de distribución son amplios, tanto para las variables de temperatura como de precipitación.

Introducción. Cuba está amenazada por el Cambio Climático. En la fisiología de las plantasparticipan enzimas que actúan como escudo al estrés oxidativo, siempre asociado a la sa-linidad, el déficit o exceso hídrico y las temperaturas extremas; esas enzimas tienen Hemocomo cofactor. Hemo es un tetrapirrol, semejante a clorofila, pero con Fe en lugar de Mgcomo átomo central. El objetivo fue investigar la respuesta asociada al hemo en plantasde tabaco bajo estrés salino, hídrico y de temperatura, junto a la planta modelo Arabidopsisthaliana. Se reportó, en tejidos de tabaco, por primera vez para la ciencia, la presencia, de laenzima Ferroquelatasa 1 (responsable de quelar el hierro al tetrapirrol). Las plantas tienendos isoformas de Ferroquelatasas (FC1 y FC2). La mutación para el gen de la Ferroquelatasa1, en la planta modelo, resultó letal para los embriones. Métodos. Al comparar los nivelesde ARNm de FC1 y FC2 en embriones de plantas tipo salvaje, se demostró que FC1 es laisoforma predominante durante la maduración del embrión. Por lo tanto, la regulación dela expresión de FC en tiempo y espacio durante la embriogénesis, es prerrequisito para eladecuado desarrollo del embrión. Resultados. Se concluye que el hemo producido por FC1,es esencial para la embriogénesis además de las respuestas al estrés. Estos conocimientos en manos de mejoradores, pudieran servir para obtenercultivares productivos con capacidad de aclimatación a los estreses abióticos asociados alcambio climático, lo que potencialmente nos daría alguna ventaja para mitigar sus efectos.El trabajo ha estimulado el intercambio científico con Alemania. Los resultados son in-cluidos como técnicas pedagógicas para la enseñanza de métodos modernos de biologíamolecular, en la formación de alto nivel de científicos jóvenes cubanos y latinoamericanosen la UH, en las 5 ediciones del curso conjunto “Basic methods in plant molecular biologyand plant physiology” con la Universidad Humboldt de Berlín.

Com o objetivo de caracterizar e comparar os diferentes aspectos quantitativos e qualitativos da pesca artesanal, foram analisados os desembarques pesqueiros da comunidade de pescadores artesanais da Barra do Rio, em Tijucas-SC, de setembro de 2010 a julho de 2011. Os desembarques pesqueiros foram acompanhados por 3 dias consecutivos a cada 2 meses, totalizando 109 desembarques de 20 diferentes pescadores. Foram obtidos dados relativos à biomassa total de cada espécie da ictiofauna capturada, somando um conjunto de 1.908,4 kg de pescado pertencentes a 26 etnogêneros diferentes. A variação da abundância e da composição de peixes pelas estações é discutida. O bagre-branco (Genidens barbus) foi a espécie de maior captura, somando 53% do peso total de pescado obtido. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho agronômico do cultivo de alface orgânica sob diferentes níveis de sombreamento, épocas de plantio e preparo do solo, no Acre. Para cada cultivar de alface avaliada, lisa (Baba de Verão) e crespa (Vera), foram instalados quatro experimentos em ambientes com níveis distintos de sombreamento (casa de vegetação, 35%; tela, 50%; latada de maracujazeiro, 52%; e a pleno sol), em duas épocas de plantio (estiagem e chuvosa). Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com três métodos de preparo do solo (plantio direto, cultivo mínimo e preparo convencional) e quatro repetições. O cultivo em casa de vegetação proporciona maior massa de matéria fresca e produtividade de alface 'Vera', e desempenho similar ao observado sob tela de sombreamento, com preparo mínimo do solo, para as duas épocas de plantio avaliadas. O cultivo a pleno sol, em plantio direto, proporciona maior massa de matéria fresca e produtividade de alface 'Vera', para o período de estiagem. A massa de matéria seca da parte aérea das cultivares Baba de Verão e Vera é maior em cultivo em casa de vegetação, seguida do cultivo sob tela de sombreamento.
