Probiotics and co-culture of shrimp and tilapia are two strategies to improve yield and eco-efficiency of both species. However, only few studies have analyzed the combination of these two strategies. This study analyzes the effect of a mixture of potential probiotics supplied in the diet at different frequencies in a system of shrimp (10 m-2) and tilapia (5 m-2) in a trial lasting 84 days. The probiotics mixture was composed of four lactic acid bacteria and one yeast strain that were supplied either daily, every 5 days, or every 10 days in the diet and compared with a control without any supply of probiotics. At the end of the experiment, blood chemistry and hematology of shrimp and tilapia were analyzed as an index of physiological condition. Water quality did not differ between treatments. The final weight, feed conversion ratio, and yield of shrimp were significantly higher with daily supply of probiotics compared to shrimp that did not receive probiotics supply, with intermediate values for treatments with probiotics supply every 5 or 10 days. However, level of supplementation every 5 days could be considered as optimal because no significant differences with daily supply were observed for any variable, whereas the supply each 10 days resulted in a significantly lower yield. Significantly higher final weight, feed conversion ratio, and yield of tilapia occurred with daily supplements. Blood cholesterol in tilapia significantly decreased with increasing frequency of probiotics supplementation. These results indicate that probiotics supplements for shrimp and tilapia cultivated simultaneously improved yields and physiological condition.

Este artículo presenta los resultados de un curso de Educación Ambiental (EA) realizado con alumnos de educación básica secundaria brasileña, teniendo como eje central el abordaje de conceptos ambientales y ecológicos. Entre las actividades desarrolladas en el curso se destacan charlas, muestras de colecta selectiva, diseño de folletos ecológicos y actividades recreativas de análisis y separación de materiales del medio ambiente. La colecta de datos incluyó una evaluación diagnóstica inicial a los participantes del curso con el objetivo de identificar los conocimientos previos de los mismos en EA y otra evaluación diagnóstica al finalizar el curso, con el propósito de identificar posibles indicios de aprendizaje de EA, partir de la intervención didáctica realizada (el curso de EA). Partiendo del estudio del contenido de referencia, el análisis las evaluaciones mostró significativas contribuciones del curso para la adecuada comprensión de EA y ecología, además de un aumento en el interés de los alumnos en participar de actividades de temática ambiental y su compromiso en aplicar los conocimientos adquiridos.

Se presentan los primeros resultados arqueológicos sistemáticos obtenidos en las cuencas de los lagos Tar y San Martín (49° 7´ S, 72° 11´ O), focalizados sobre la distribución espacial y temporal del registro. La información se ordena siguiendo las principales unidades ecológicas (estepa, ecotono y bosque) con el fin de discutir la existencia de diferencias en el uso del espacio por parte de las poblaciones cazadoras recolectoras. A la vez, se brindan valores de isótopos estables (δ13C y δ15N) obtenidos sobre muestras arqueofaunísticas de guanaco (Lama guanicoe) que permiten comenzar a delinear la ecología isotópica regional. Las diferencias en las distribuciones artefactuales articulan un primer modelo del paisaje arqueológico regional que muestra que las mayores intensidades de uso humano se registran en la margen este del lago Tar y en los alrededores del Cerro Cach Aike, decreciendo hacia el oeste (margen sur del lago San Martín). Las ocupaciones humanas se habrían iniciado alrededor de 9700 años AP, manteniéndose de manera discontinua hasta momentos históricos. Por último, se comparan los datos obtenidos con los disponibles en otras cuencas lacustres cordilleranas aledañas, integrando así un nuevo espacio a la discusión del poblamiento humano del suroeste de Patagonia.The aim of this paper is to present the first preliminary results of the systematic archaeological research carried out in the Lago Tar and Lago San Martin basins (49° 7´ S, 72° 11´ O), focusing on the distributional aspects of the record. In order to discuss patterned differences in the space use by prehistoric hunter-gatherers, the information is organized following the main ecologic units (steppe, forest, and the corresponding ecotone). Stable isotope data (δ13C and δ15N) from guanaco (Lama guanicoe) bone samples are also reported as a first step in the understanding of the regional isotopic ecology. On the basis of some differences in the spacial distribution of artifacts it can be proposed that the higher intensity of human use was concentrated on the eastern shore of Lago Tar and around Cerro Cach Aike. Such intensity decreases westward (southern shore of the Lago San Martin). The occupation history of these spaces began around 9700 years BP, following a highly punctuated pattern until historic times. The paper ends with a comparison between the archaeological record of Lago Tar and Lago San Martin basins with other southern Patagonia cordillerean lacustrine basins in order to discuss the prehistoric peopling of the region.

Organismos internacionales y especialistas coinciden en que los problemas de crisis e inseguridad alimentaria se asocian con las po - líticas que diferentes países aplicaron en las últimas dos décadas, las cuales desmantelaron los programas de fomento a la agricultura, en particular de los pequeños productores. Aunque esta reestructuración neoliberal se realizó de manera heterogénea, los retos para reactivar la producción agroalimentaria sustentable y de calidad, así como de elevar los ingresos rurales, son de gran magnitud, y en ocasiones no aparecen en los objetivos de la política nacional. En este documento analizamos la forma en que la reestructuración ha impactado en ciertos patrones de creciente inseguridad alimentaria en México y Chiapas, así como la manera en que pequeños productores han adaptado y retado este proceso, constituyendo iniciativas con las que revalorizan la lógica de la agricultura campesina y de pequeña escala.

Ptychoglossus bicolor is a small gymnophthalmid lizard distributed in the Magdalena Valley of Colombia. We studied ecological features of diet, microhabitat use, and thermal preferences of a population found in an organic coffee shade plantation at the Cordillera Oriental of the Colombian Andes. The studied population had a diet composed predominantly of isopods. The Relative Importance Index of isopods was 98.8%; there were no significant monthly differences in the full stomach content and volume of isopods eaten during the sampling year, neither between rainy and dry seasons. A large number of lizards were found active in the leaf-litter, buried around coffee tree roots, and under or in rotting logs. Lizard body temperature was positively correlated with substrate temperature and air temperature; sex differences in body temperature were not significant. At the studied locality we did not find lizards out of the coffee fields. Our results suggested that these lizards successfully cope with the conditions offered by the organic coffee areas as a result of the cultivation system. Thus, this population might be vulnerable to any modification of the habitat that changes microhabitat availability and abundance of isopods.Ptychoglossus bicolor es un pequeño lagarto de la familia Gymnophthalmidae, que habita el valle del Río Magdalena de Colombia. Se estudiaron las características ecológicas de la dieta, uso de microhábitat y preferencias termales de una población que habita una plantación de café orgánico bajo sombra en la Cordillera Oriental colombiana. La dieta en esta población está dominada por isópodos. El Índice Valor de Importancia Relativa fue del 98.8% y no hubo diferencias mensuales significativas en el contenido estomacal y el volumen de isópodos consumidos durante el año, ni tampoco entre las estaciones de lluvia y seca. Un gran número de lagartos fueron encontrados activos entre la hojarasca, enterrados junto a las raíces de los árboles y bajo o dentro de troncos en descomposición. La temperatura corporal estuvo positivamente correlacionada con las temperaturas del suelo y del aire y no hubo diferencias significativas en temperatura corporal entre los sexos. En esta localidad no encontramos lagartos fuera de los campos de cultivo de café. Nuestros resultados sugieren que estos lagartos sobrellevan exitosamente las condiciones ofrecidas por los cafetales orgánicos como resultado del sistema de cultivo. Así, esta población podría ser vulnerable a cualquier modificación del hábitat que cambie la disponibilidad de microhábitats y la abundancia de isópodos.

Bacterial endophytes support the adaptation of host plants to harsh environments. In this study, culturable bacterial endophytes were isolated from the African rice Oryza glaberrima L., which is well-adapted to grow with poor external inputs in the tropical region of Mali. Among these, six N-fixer strains were used to inoculate O. glaberrima RAM133 and the Asian rice O. sativa L. cv. Baldo, selected for growth in temperate climates. The colonization efficiency and the N-fixing activity were evaluated and compared for the two rice varieties. Oryza sativa-inoculated plants showed a fairly good colonization efficiency and nitrogenase activity. The inoculation of Oryza sativa with the strains Klebsiella pasteurii BDA134-6 and Phytobacter diazotrophicus BDA59-3 led to the highest nitrogenase activity. In addition, the inoculation of ‘Baldo’ plants with the strain P. diazotrophicus BDA59-3 led to a significant increase in nitrogen, carbon and chlorophyll content. Finally, ‘Baldo’ plants inoculated with Kl. pasteurii BDA134-6 showed the induction of antioxidant enzymes activity and the maintenance of nitrogen-fixation under salt stress as compared to the unstressed controls. As these endophytes efficiently colonize high-yielding crop varieties grown in cold temperate climates, they become good candidates to promote their growth under unfavorable conditions.

En el campo de la ecología y en general en el área de ciencias naturales y educación ambiental, el concepto de ecosistema y conceptos relacionados con su dinámica como flujos de energía, ciclos de nutrientes, redes tróficas, interacciones, estabilidad y equilibrio y efecto de las perturbaciones sobre la dinámica del ecosistema son fundamentales; sin embargo en los estudios realizados acerca de las concepciones sobre la noción de ecosistema se han encontrado una serie de dificultades y concepciones erróneas respecto a este concepto, en diferentes niveles de escolaridad. El propósito de este trabajo es presentar una revisión documental sobre las concepciones que tienen los estudiantes de educación básica sobre ecosistema y las perspectivas de abordaje para el análisis de las mismas en estos estudios.

The Taccaceae (Liliidae) are known in Colombia only from an old and obscure collection of Tacca parkeri Seem. Two new localities from the department of Guainía are here reported. This variable species is widely distributed in the Guayana region and the Amazonian lowlands. Some comments about morphological variability, flowering time and distribution of this species are also included.Se documenta la presencia de la familia Taccaceae (Liliidae) en Colombia, conocida solo por un impreciso registro de Tacca parkeri Seem., con la adición de dos nuevas localidades provenientes del departamento del Guainía. La especie, muy variable, se encuentra ampliamente distribuida en la región Guayana y en zonas bajas de la cuenca amazónica. Se adiciona información sobre variabilidad morfológica, período de floración y distribución de esta especie.

This paper analyzes the export-behavior of Chilean agribusiness and food processing firms and the relative importance of firm-specific and geographic characteristics in this behavior. Using firm level data and regional geographic indicators, a dynamic model was used to study the export decisions and the export intensity of three industries: processing fish, processing fruits and vegetables, and wine production. Results showed that determinants of exporting behavior vary among the three industries, except the effect of sunk costs, which strongly impacts the export decisions of all analyzed industries. This implies that firms with prior export experience will have higher probability of exporting in the future. Foreign ownership positively impacts the export decision of the two processing industries. Thus, firms belonging to these industries that wish to increase the probability of being an exporter should be encouraged to have a partnership with a foreign company or investor. The export intensity is positively influenced by foreign ownership in the fruit and vegetables processing and wine industries. As in the case of the export decision of firms, foreign participation helps increase the scale of exports. In general, firm-specific characteristics significantly impact the export behavior in Chilean agribusiness and processed food industries, while the contribution of geography attributes appears mixed.Este artículo analiza el comportamiento exportador de las empresas chilenas agroindustriales y procesadoras de alimentos y la importancia relativa que las características geográficas y específicas de las empresas tienen en este comportamiento exportador. Con datos a nivel de empresas e indicadores geográficos regionales, se utilizó un modelo dinámico para estudiar la decisión y la intensidad exportadora de tres industrias: industria procesadora de pescados, industria procesadora de frutas y hortalizas, e industria productora de vinos. Los resultados indican que las determinantes del comportamiento exportador varían entre las tres industrias, excepto el efecto de los costos hundidos, los cuales impactan fuertemente la decisión de exportar de todas las industrias analizadas. Esto implica que las empresas con experiencia exportadora previa tendrán mayores probabilidades de exportar en el futuro. La propiedad extranjera impacta positivamente la decisión de exportar de las dos industrias procesadoras. Así, las empresas de estas industrias que deseen aumentar sus probabilidades de llegar a ser exportadoras, deberían tratar de asociarse con empresas o inversionistas extranjeros. La intensidad de exportación está positivamente influenciada por la propiedad extranjera en la industria procesadora de frutas y hortalizas, y en la industria vitivinícola. Así como en el caso de la decisión de exportar, la participación extranjera ayuda a incrementar la escala de las exportaciones. En general, las características específicas asociadas a las empresas impactan significativamente el comportamiento exportador de las agroindustrias e industrias chilenas procesadoras de alimentos, mientras que la contribución de los atributos geográficos no es del todo clara.
