In addition, recent research has suggested their modulatory activity in immune induction. Given that most subunit vaccines require an adjuvant to achieve effective immune induction through the activation of innate immunity, AMPs are plausible candidate molecules for stimulating not only innate immune but also adaptive immune responses. Results In this study, we investigated the ability of human β-defensin (HBD) 2 to promote antiviral immunity in vitro and in vivo using a receptor-binding domain (RBD) of Middle East respiratory syndrome-coronavirus (MERS-CoV) spike protein (S RBD) as a model antigen (Ag). When HBD 2-conjugated S RBD was used to treat THP-1 human monocytic cells, the expression levels of antiviral (IFN-β, IFN-γ, MxA, PKR, and RNaseL) and primary immune-inducing (NOD2, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) molecules were enhanced compared to those expressed after treatment with S RBD only. The expression of chemokines capable of recruiting leukocytes, including monocytes/macrophages, natural killer cells, granulocytes, T cells, and dendritic cells, was also increased following HBD 2-conjugated S RBD treatment. More important, immunization of mice with HBD 2-conjugated S RBD enhanced the immunogenicity of the S RBD and elicited a higher S RBD-specific neutralizing antibody response than S RBD alone. Conclusions We conclude that HBD 2 activates the primary antiviral innate immune response and may also mediate the induction of an effective adaptive immune response against a conjugated Ag. However, MERS with myelitis has rarely been reported. We reported a case of MERS with concomitant myelitis. Case Report: A 35-year-old male was admitted to our department because of decreased mentality. Before admission, he complained of headache, fever over 38.0oC and urinary retention. Brain MRI showed a lesion on the splenium and spine MRI revealed diffuse lesions in the cervicothoracic segments. He was treated with an IV steroid pulse regimen for 5 days. Remarkably, he recovered from his neurological symptoms after 1 month of symptom onset. Conclusion: This is the first report on MERS with concomitant myelitis in Korea. While the etiology is unknown, certain trophisms of infectious pathogens to the CNS structure may have a role in this syndrome. In this study, we review the systematics of Ecuadorian glassfrogs, providing species accounts of all 60 species, including three new species described herein. For all Ecuadorian species, we provide new information on the evolution, morphology, biology, conservation, and distribution. We present a new molecular phylogeny for Centrolenidae and address cryptic diversity within the family. We employ a candidate species system and designate 24 putative new species that require further study to determine their species status. We find that, in some cases, currently recognized species lack justification; specifically, we place Centrolene gemmata and Centrolene scirtetes under the synonymy of Centrolene lynchi; C. guanacarum and C. bacata under the synonymy of Centrolene sanchezi; Cochranella phryxa under the synonymy of Cochranella resplendens; and Hyalinobatrachium ruedai under the synonymy of Hyalinobatrachium munozorum. We also find that diversification patterns are mostly congruent with allopatric speciation, facilitated by barriers to gene flow (e.g., valleys, mountains, linearity of the Andes), and that niche conservatism is a dominant feature in the family. Conservation threats are diverse, but habitat destruction and climate change are of particular concern. The most imperiled glassfrogs in Ecuador are Centrolene buckleyi, C. charapita, C. geckoidea, C. medemi, C. pipilata, Cochranella mache, Nymphargus balionotus, N. manduriacu, N. megacheirus, and N. sucre, all of which are considered Critically Endangered. Lastly, we identify priority areas for glassfrog conservation in Ecuador. La normativa actual determina que la utilización de estos recursos dependa del ordenamiento territorial de los bosques. Sin embargo, el conocimiento de los bosques de zonas áridas es incompleto. Nos propusimos determinar: distribución, estructura actual, estado de conservación y crecimiento leñoso de los algarrobales del Bolsón de Fiambalá. Se identificaron unidades boscosas mediante la clasificación supervisada de imágenes. Se realizaron estudios poblacionales de P. flexuosa, se midieron variables alométricas y se aplicaron técnicas dendrocronológicas tradicionales. Se distinguieron dos tipos de bosque: denso con mayor cobertura total (39 %) y ralo (21 %). Las estructuras de diámetro fueron similares, sin embargo fue mayor la altura total, la cantidad de árboles maderables y el área basal en el bosque denso. Fue similar el grado de utilización y el estado de conservación. Las diferencias entre los bosques pueden explicarse por la posición del bosque relativa al acuífero subterráneo y al tipo de suelo. La conservación y utilización controlada de estos recursos, constituye un aporte a la mitigación del cambio climático ya que los algarrobales constituyen el principal reservorio de C en los sistemas desérticos. El experimento se realizó en San Gabriel, Apurímac, Perú. Los factores estudiados fueron dosis (12,5; 25 y 50 cc) y frecuencias de aplicación (7, 14 y 21 días); se utilizó un diseño de bloques completos al azar, con arreglo factorial de 3 x 3 + 1, con tres repeticiones. Se evaluaron: altura de planta, número de flores, área foliar, número de tallos, peso de la raíz y rendimiento en g/planta. Los resultados mostraron que la dosis de 25 cc de EMA aplicado cada 14 días, contribuyó a una mayor altura (39 cm), mayor número de flores (37 flores), mayor área foliar (24 cm2), el mayor número de tallos por planta (5 tallos), el mayor peso de la raíz a la cosecha (59,67 g) y el mayor rendimiento (1713,69 g/planta). Ello sugiere que la aplicación de biofertilizante puede ser una importante alternativa para fertilizar cultivos como el tomate, reduciendo el uso de fertilizantes de síntesis química e incrementar la producción.
