Although severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is highly infectious in clinical settings, SARS has not been well examined in household settings. The household and household member attack rates were calculated for 1,214 SARS case-patients and their household members, stratified by two phases of the epidemic. A case-control analysis identified risk factors for secondary infection. Secondary infection occurred in 14.9% (22.1% versus 11% in earlier and later phases) of all households and 8% (11.7% versus 5.9% in the earlier and later phases) of all household members. Healthcare workers’ households were less likely to be affected. Risk factors from the multivariate analysis included at-home duration before hospitalization, hospital visitation to the SARS patient (and mask use during the visit), and frequency of close contact. SARS transmission at the household level was not negligible in Hong Kong. Transmission rates may be greatly reduced with precautionary measures taken by household members of SARS patients.

Due to their ability to inhibit viral DNA or RNA replication, nucleoside analogues have been used for decades as potent antiviral therapeutics. However, one of the major limitations of nucleoside analogues is the development of antiviral resistance. In that regard, flexible nucleoside analogues known as “fleximers” have garnered attention over the years due to their ability to survey different amino acids in enzyme binding sites, thus overcoming the potential development of antiviral resistance. Acyclic fleximers have previously demonstrated antiviral activity against numerous viruses including Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), Ebola virus (EBOV), and, most recently, flaviviruses such as Dengue (DENV) and Yellow Fever Virus (YFV). Due to these interesting results, a Structure Activity Relationship (SAR) study was pursued in order to analyze the effect of the pyrimidine functional group and acyl protecting group on antiviral activity, cytotoxicity, and conformation. The results of those studies are presented herein.

Estas bacterias pueden producir proteínas llamadas bacteriocinas, que actúan como agentes antibacterianos. Las bacteriocinas pueden, además de proteger al hospedero contra el ataque de bacterias patógenas, también servir como bioconservadores en alimentos. Hasta ahora, la Nisina es la única bacteriocina que se usa comercialmente en la conservación de alimentos; sin embargo, existen otras con uso potencial como bioconservadores. En este trabajo analizamos aspectos generales de los probióticos, de los conservadores naturales, de las bacteriocinas tanto producidas por bacterias lácticas como por una bacteria que es bioinsecticida.Probiotics contain bacteria that provide benefits to the consumer’s health. Probiotic bacteria may produce proteins called bacteriocins which act as anti-microbial agents. Bacteriocins protect not only consumer against food-borne pathogenic bacteria, but also can play a role as preservatives in food. Currently, Nisin is the only bacteriocin used as a food additive, nevertheless there are other bacteriocins with a potential use as preservatives. In this work, a general overview is presented of probiotics, natural preservatives, bacteriocins from lacticbacteria, and those produced by aninsecticidal bacterium.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the learning system in schools. The learning that initially took place in class spontaneously turned into online learning. This change requires teachers to be more creative in designing learning. This study aims to improve students’ critical thinking skills through online problem-based learning integrated into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (PBL-STEM). The research was conducted on students of class X IPA (Natural Science) in a high school in Cianjur with a Non-Equivalent Pretest-Posttest Control Group design. The research data were collected using a test of critical thinking skills in six valid essay questions with a reliability coefficient of 0.913. Besides, students’ responses to the application of PBL-STEM learning were collected through a questionnaire. The collected data were processed descriptively and inferentially. The results showed that the online application of PBL-STEM went well, and there was an increase in critical thinking skills with an N-gain of 72%. The highest gain is on the indicator of explanation, and the lowest is evaluation. The results of the significance test showed that the increase in students’ critical thinking skills through PBL-STEM learning was more significant than PBL learning. Students also responded well to the implementation of PBL-STEM in learning during the COVID-19 pandemic by 81%.

The multinational corporations intensify activities in worldwide. For example, Vietnam’s international integration has also changed rapidly with the trend of gradually entering the global supply chain and global value chain that help to create a powerful dynamic for national economic development. A part domestic enterprises is engaged either in outsourcing, or become a multinational corporations suppliers, but their role was unstable. The article also provides an overview of the unprecedented impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Vietnamese businesses, and the appropriate responses to reshape and strengthen corporations for processing and manufacturing industries. Los bajos rendimientos en muchas de las áreas cañeras, han caracterizado a la agroindustria azucarera cubana en los últimos años. El siguiente trabajo se desarrolló durante los años 2013 y 2014 en la Unidad Básica de Producción Cooperativa Potrerillo, ubicada al centro de la provincia, tributaria a la Unidad Empresarial de Base Melanio Hernández, en Tuinucú, Empresa Azucarera de Sancti Spíritus; el mismo tuvo como objetivo definir losproblemas críticos asociados al rendimiento agrícola de la caña de azúcar y las acciones inmediatas en ejecuciónpara su solución, con los pronósticos para su recuperación.Para ello se realizó un diagnóstico participativo y se identificaron 15 problemas fundamentalesque afectaron demanera directa el rendimiento de la caña de azúcar, con la presencia de todos los cooperativistas,a partir de estosel grupo de expertos y los cooperativistas, confeccionaron la matriz de Vester; con esta herramienta se determinaron y clasificaron a partir del tipo de relaciones entre las variables, los problemas críticos, activos, pasivos e independientes. A través de una ecuación de regresión, se logró predecir la recuperación por años del rendimiento agrícola de la Cooperativa, sostenible a partir del 2017.
