<text>5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is derived from the essential amino acid L-tryptophan. Although the compound has been studied extensively for its neuronal handling and synaptic actions, serotonin 5-HT receptors can be found extra-synaptically and not only in neurons but in many types of mammalian cells, inside and outside the central nervous system (CNS). In sharp contrast, glutamate (Glu) and ATP are better known as metabolism-related molecules, but they also are neurotransmitters, and their receptors are expressed on almost any type of cell inside and outside the nervous system. Whereas 5-hydroxytryptamine and Glu are key regulators of the immune system, ATP actions are more general. 5-hydroxytryptamine, ATP and Glu act through both G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), and ionotropic receptors, i.e., ligand gated ion channels. These are the three examples of neurotransmitters whose actions as holistic regulatory molecules are briefly put into perspective here.</text>

Soil physical quality is the ability to sustain the full development of plants. The aim of this research was to study different tillage systems for grain production in family farming enterprises on an Oxisol in northern Parana, Brazil, through the study of morphology and physical properties of soil. The study was based on description of soil structure of soil profiles in cultivated areas with annual crops under different soil management systems (no-tillage with and without crop rotation, no-tillage with eventual chisel ploughing and minimum tillage). Simultaneously with the profiles' description some physical properties were determined such as resistance to penetration, bulk density, soil moisture and the degree of clay flocculation. Each studied soil tillage system was characterized by a type of soil structure and correlated with values of resistance to penetration, density and degree of flocculation, and for all studied profiles below 0.30 m of depth the soil had good structural conditions for root development.</text>

Palabras clave: género Vicugna, osteometría, Pleistoceno, Patagonia AbstractThis contribution presents the results of single and multi-variable osteometric analyses performed on a sample of short bones and phalanxes assigned to Vicugna sp. from Lago Sofía Cave 4 site (13500 – 11000 BP), Región de Magallanes, Chile. The elements analyzed show a similar size to the reference collections for Vicugna vicugna, and do not exceed the metrics for the pampean pleistocenic specimens of Vicugna gracilis. This confirms the morphological and ancient DNA data that indicated the presence of vicuña in southern Chilean Patagonia. The taxonomic, biogeographic and palaeoecologic discussion of these results, suggests that the presence of this species outside its current distribution range was due to shared environmental conditions between the Puna and Patagonia during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. The extinction of this form is, most likely, due to the impact of climatic change during the begining of the Holocene over its pasturing diet and its territorial and non migratory habits. It is added to this, a hunting pressure by human and non-human predators. Keywords: Vicugna genus, osteometry, Pleistocene, Patagonia </text>
