El enfoque de Adaptación basada en Ecosistemas (AbE) fue utilizado para identificar los beneficios locales proporcionados por los manglares y el aumento de su capacidad de adaptación al cambio climático y considerando que si el manglar se encuentra en buen estado de conservación se mantendrán los servicios de los ecosistemas, incluyendo la protección contra huracanes y sus efectos. En este sentido, para la evaluación del estado de conservación y la estructura de la vegetación se monitorearon 7 transectos, donde se registraron: a) cambios en el tipo de vegetación (datos biológicos, fenológicos, altura de especies arbóreas y en los manglares la condición de las raíces aéreas), b) la representatividad de las especies locales para cada tipo de vegetación identificado (manglares, bosques tropicales de agua dulce, vegetación de dunas costeras, selva baja, arbustos espinosos y cultivos), c) la conectividad diferenciando la continuidad entre los diferentes tipos de vegetación costera o la ruptura de la continuidad por actividades antrópicas, d) el cambio en la cobertura de vegetación e) cambios en la integridad de la vegetación asociados a ecoturismo, asentamientos humanos, cultivos o, y f) la microtopografía de los transectos identificando la altura del escarpe de playa y la pendiente del transecto. Los transectos fueron colocados transversalmente a las islas de barrera, según los diferentes tipos de vegetación y usos de la tierra. Para evaluar la vulnerabilidad social local a climas extremos, se analizaron los cambios en la cobertura vegetal mediante técnicas de teledetección, estadísticas demográficas y se aplicaron entrevistas semi-estructuradas a los habitantes locales y las autoridades de Protección Civil. The mechanisms that these groups use to achieve their goals and confront situations of change and vulnerability have not been studied in detail. The objective of this study was to analyze the organizational model used by a group of farmers –from the Frailesca region of Chiapas, Mexico– to confront situations of vulnerability and carry out social innovation processes. Using qualitative methods, we analyzed the influence on group performance of: public policy, relationships by which knowledge is exchanged, and values and norms. Results indicate that knowledge exchange within the group, as well as by group members toward other actors, is important for improving production; however, the following are also necessary: effective mechanisms of coordinating collective decision making, experience and capability of developing and implementing sustainable agricultural practices, a facilitator who promotes group cohesion and coordination, and social mechanisms (collective norms, values, sanctions) that provide the organization with legitimacy. The principal conclusion of this study is that a group with effective organizational mechanisms is capable of confronting situations of vulnerability through knowledge, cooperation, and social innovation. The purpose of this work is to analyse samples of vaginal fluid targeting the infection etiology and its relationship to related factors: (intrauterine devices, contraceptive pills, condoms, use of antibiotics), symptoms and signs. From November 1, 2001 to October 30, 2003, a cross-section study was carried out of 400 nonpregnant, sexually active women in an age range of 15 to 55. Vaginal secretions were analysed by Gram and Giemsa stains and culturing was used. Interpreting: (1) normal - no observable changes, absence of the infecting agents studied here; (2) infected - changes observed: bacterial vaginosis, vaginal candidiasis (CV) and trichomoniasis (TC) and (3) imbalance in vagina ecology, with medium alterations (D). Results obtained: (1) normal: 209 (52.2%); infected: 115 (28.8%) including 13.5%VB, 12.5% CV, 2.8% TC, and (3) 76 (19%) with imbalance of vagina ecology. In Brazil, bioindicators use is strongly focused in a multimetrical ecological index approach; this way, we investigated the black fly spatial distribution, in relation to abiotic factors correlated to water quality, to provide baseline information for their utilization as standalone indicators of lotic systems integrity. We have tested the hypothesis that environmental changes related to urbanization, lead to decreased abundance and loss in the number of species of the black fly fauna. The sampling was conducted in 10 urban and 10 preserved streams during the dry season (August-September) of 2012, in the mountainous region of Teresópolis, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The streams were characterized for their environmental integrity conditions and physico-chemical properties of water. In each stream, five different rapid points were sampled in a section of 50 meters, 10 meters apart from each other. The black flies were sampled with a kick-net sampler on rocky substrates. The material was separated and the larvae were sorted in morphotypes, and later, the final instar specimens were dissected and identified with the help of taxonomical literature at species level. A total abundance of 488 larvae from nine species were collected, 5 (1.02 %) in extremely impacted streams, 470 (96.31 %) in intermediate streams and 13 (2.66 %) in preserved streams. The visual evaluation (HII) differed in rela&amp;tion to the water physico-chemical evaluation, in which more variation in the characterization of the sampling sites was observed. In Canonical Correspondence Analysis Simulium subpallidum, S. inscrustatumand S. pertinaxwere significantly associated with intermediate values of most of the variables, and then to intermediate impacted sites. On the other hand, Lutzsimulium hirticosta, S. subnigrumand Simuliumsp. A were associated to low values of chemical variables, and then to more preserved sites. Most studies on the bioindicator potential of Simuliidae have suggested an approach to agricultural impacts, while our results, on the other hand, showed that Simuliidae species were present in streams with intermediate urban pollution impacts, but absent in heavily impacted sites. Thus, our data suggested that some species are associated to more pristine breeding sites, such as L. hirticostaand Simuliumsp.
