Kharchenko Description An account of the resource With computer analysis occurrence of small homologous and complementary fragments (21 nucleotides in length) has been studied in genomes of 14 human viruses causing most dangerous infections. The sample includes viruses with (+) and (–) single stranded RNA and DNA-containing hepatitis A virus. Analysis of occurrence of homologous sequences has shown the existence two extreme situations. On the one hand, the same virus contains homologous sequences to almost all other viruses (for example, Ebola virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus, and mumps virus), and numerous homologous sequences to the same other virus (especially in severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus to Dengue virus and in Ebola virus to poliovirus). On the other hand, there are rare occurrence and not numerous homologous sequences in genomes of other viruses (rubella virus, hepatitis A virus, and hepatitis B virus). Similar situation exists for occurrence of complementary sequences. Rubella virus, the genome of which has the high content of guanine and cytosine, has no complementary sequences to almost all other viruses. Most viruses have moderate level of occurrence for homologous and complementary sequences. Autocomplementary sequences are numerous in most viruses and one may suggest that the genome of single stranded RNA viruses has branched secondary structure. In addition to possible role in recombination among strains autocomplementary sequences could be regulators of translation rate of virus proteins and determine its optimal proportion in virion assembly with genome and mRNA folding. Occurrence of small homologous and complementary sequences in RNA- and DNA-containing viruses may be the result of multiple recombinations in the past and the present and determine their adaptation and variability. Recombination may take place in coinfection of human and/or common hosts. Inclusion of homologous and complementary sequences into genome could not only renew viruses but also serve as memory of existence of a competitor for host and means of counteraction against a competitor in coinfection being an analogy of the bacterial CRISPR/Cas system. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la respuesta de plantas de S.rebaudiana Bert. a cuatro láminas de riego calculadas a partir de la evapotranspiración de referencia (ETo) en interacción con inoculantes microbianos.Método Se aplicaron tratamientos de riego con 60, 80, 100 y 120% de la ETo estimada con un tanque evaporímetro tipo “A” en plantas previamente inoculadas. Se evaluaron como inoculantes una mezcla de Bacillus spp. y Azospirillum brasilense, Rhizophagus intraradices y un testigo (sin inocular). Se utilizó un diseño de bloques completos al azar con arreglo bi-factorial y cuatro repeticiones. Se evaluaron parámetros de crecimiento, producción y distribución de biomasa seca, intercambio de gases y uso eficiente del agua. Resultados Se encontró diferencia estadística (p ≤ 0.05) causada por los factores separados. La mayor altura se obtuvo con 120% ETo, aunque fue estadísticamente igual a 100% ETo (p ≤ 0.05), alcanzando 42.86 y 40.58 cm, respectivamente; la mayor área foliar se obtuvo con 120% ETo. El tratamiento con Rhizophagus intraradices mostró diferencias significativas (p ≤ 0.05) en la longitud de raíz contra el testigo, pero fue estadísticamente similar a la mezcla de rizobacterias. De igual forma, R. intraradices mejoró el volumen de raíz registrando 2.49 cm3 con respecto al testigo y redujo en 20% la aplicación de la ETo para obtener la mayor producción de biomasa seca de hoja y raíz. La interacción R. intraradices + 80% ETo favoreció la asimilación del CO2 con 5.41 µmol m-2 s-1, de esta manera se proporcionó mejores condiciones para la transpiración y el uso eficiente del agua (1.87 µmol CO2 mmol-1 H20). Conclusión Los tratamientos de riego mostraron efectos en la altura, área foliar, diámetro del tallo y rendimiento de hoja seca, mientras que el factor inoculante sólo afectó la longitud de raíz, volumen de raíz, relación MSV/MSR y rendimiento. Por último, la interacción de ambos factores solo fue significativa para la producción de biomasa seca e intercambio de gases. Para ello, se utilizó una función no lineal para conjuntos de datos de longitud por edad: el modelo de crecimiento de von Bertalanffy. Estas poblaciones europeas periféricas tienen las tasas de crecimiento más altas (k en el modelo de von Bertalanffy > 0,4 mes–1, en promedio) conocidas para esta especie. A partir de los parámetros del modelo de von Bertalanffy, se calcularon las tasas de mortalidad instantánea y de fecundidad de cada población, y se observó que las tasas de mortalidad de las poblaciones gallegas son de 2 a 2,3 veces superiores a las observadas en general en Gasterosteidae. La combinación de la fertilidad y la mortalidad produjo diferentes valores óptimos intermedios de eficacia biológica para las hembras maduras de cada población. En términos generales, estas diferencias encontradas en rasgos vitales con respecto a otras poblaciones estudiadas de pez espinoso se pueden interpretar como adaptaciones locales a un clima de tipo mediterráneo con un valor alto de grados–día. Alfieri Description An account of the resource Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) causes severe diarrhea in newborn calves, is associated with winter dysentery in adult cattle and respiratory infections in calves and feedlot cattle. The BCoV S protein plays a fundamental role in viral attachment and entry into the host cell, and is cleaved into two subunits termed S1 (amino terminal) and S2 (carboxy terminal). The present study describes a strategy for the sequencing of the BCoV S1 gene directly from fecal diarrheic specimens that were previously identified as BCoV positive by RT-PCR assay for N gene detection. A consensus sequence of 2681 nucleotides was obtained through direct sequencing of seven overlapping PCR fragments of the S gene. The samples did not undergo cell culture passage prior to PCR amplification and sequencing. The structural analysis was based on the genomic differences between Brazilian strains and other known BCoV from different geographical regions. The phylogenetic analysis of the entire S1 gene showed that the BCoV Brazilian strains were more distant from the Mebus strain (97.8% identity for nucleotides and 96.8% identity for amino acids) and more similar to the BCoV-ENT strain (98.7% for nucleotides and 98.7% for amino acids). Based on the phylogenetic analysis of the hypervariable region of the S1 subunit, these strains clustered with the American (BCoV-ENT, 182NS) and Canadian (BCQ20, BCQ2070, BCQ9, BCQ571, BCQ1523) calf diarrhea and the Canadian winter dysentery (BCQ7373, BCQ2590) strains, but clustered on a separate branch of the Korean and respiratory BCoV strains. The BCoV strains of the present study were not clustered in the same branch of previously published Brazilian strains (AY606193, AY606194). These data agree with the genealogical construction and suggest that at least two different BCoV strains are circulating in Brazil. Pun Description An account of the resource Abstract The novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2-causing Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19), emerged as a public health threat in December 2019 and was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020. Delirium, a dangerous untoward prognostic development, serves as a barometer of systemic injury in critical illness. The early reports of 25% encephalopathy from China are likely a gross underestimation, which we know occurs whenever delirium is not monitored with a valid tool. Indeed, patients with COVID-19 are at accelerated risk for delirium due to at least seven factors including (1) direct central nervous system (CNS) invasion, (2) induction of CNS inflammatory mediators, (3) secondary effect of other organ system failure, (4) effect of sedative strategies, (5) prolonged mechanical ventilation time, (6) immobilization, and (7) other needed but unfortunate environmental factors including social isolation and quarantine without family. Given early insights into the pathobiology of the virus, as well as the emerging interventions utilized to treat the critically ill patients, delirium prevention and management will prove exceedingly challenging, especially in the intensive care unit (ICU). The main focus during the COVID-19 pandemic lies within organizational issues, i.e., lack of ventilators, shortage of personal protection equipment, resource allocation, prioritization of limited mechanical ventilation options, and end-of-life care. However, the standard of care for ICU patients, including delirium management, must remain the highest quality possible with an eye towards long-term survival and minimization of issues related to post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). This article discusses how ICU professionals (e.g., physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacologists) can use our knowledge and resources to limit the burden of delirium on patients by reducing modifiable risk factors despite the imposed heavy workload and difficult clinical challenges posed by the pandemic. Vignola Description An account of the resource El objetivo de este estudio es identificar los ecosistemas forestales que provén servicios ecosistémicos hídricos (SEH) importantes para la adaptación del sector hidroenergético al cambio climático en Costa Rica. Se evaluó un marco metodológico que tomó en cuenta los vínculos espaciales entre usos del suelo, su capacidad de producir SEH y la utilidad que las centrales hidroeléctricas obtienen de los SEH, en un contexto de vulnerabilidad a eventos climáticos. Las centrales hidroeléctricas reciben SEH del 24% del territorio nacional, que en su mayoría está bajo cobertura forestal (52%). Las cuencas del río Reventazón, Grande de Tárcoles y Grande de Terraba son las más importantes en términos de área que provee SEH. Cerca del 70% de los ecosistemas forestales identificados como relevantes para la hidroenergía se encuentran fuera de áreas protegidas. Los resultados de este trabajo son de importancia para la implementación de planes de manejo adaptativo de los ecosistemas prioritarios para garantizar el flujo continuo de SEH y así contribuir a la resiliencia del sector hidroenergético, en particular frente al cambio climático.
