Históricamente, ha habido gran confusión con respecto a la taxonomla de A. citrinellus. Varias formas de A. citrinellus han sido identificadas dentro de la cuenca de los grandes lagos de Nicaragua. Esta investigación plantea que tres formas de A. citrinellus existen en la Laguna de Xiloa.
