                <text>Long-term monitoring data provide a basis to recognize changes in coral reef communities and to implement appropriate management strategies. Unfortunately, coral reef dynamics have been poorly documented at any temporal scale in the Southern Caribbean. Through the 'National Monitoring System of Coral Reefs in Colombia' (Spanish acronym: SIMAC), we assessed 32 permanent plots at different depth levels in six reefs areas of the Colombian Caribbean from 1998 to 2004. Temporal trends in coral and algal cover were evaluated by repeated measures ANOVA. The model included the effect of depth levels (a fixed effect), monitoring plots (a random effect) as a nested factor within depths, and time (repeated factor). We found high spatial variability in major benthic components. Overall means indicated that algae were the most abundant biotic component in nearly all areas, ranging from 30.3% at Rosario to 53.3% at San Andrés. Live coral cover varied considerably from 10.1% at Santa Marta up to 43.5% at Urabá. Coral and algae cover per se are not always accurate reef indicators and therefore they need supplementary information. Temporal analyses suggested relative stability of coral and algal cover along the study but the causes for the observed trends were rarely identified. A significant decrease (p=0.042) in coral cover was only identified for some monitoring plots in Tayrona-time x plot (depth level) interaction, and importantly, few coral species explained this trend. Significant increase (p=0.005) in algal cover was observed over time for most plots in Rosario. Temporal trajectories in algal cover were influenced by depth-significant time x depth interaction-in San Andrés (increase, p=0.004) and Urabá (decrease, p=0.027). Algae trends were mainly explained by changes in algal turfs. Monitoring programs must focus on the mechanisms mediating the changes, in particular those concerning coral recovery and reef resilience in the current context of climate change. Rev. Biol. Epub 2010 May 01.Este trabajo contiene el primer análisis temporal de la información obtenida por el Sistema Nacional de Monitoreo de Arrecifes Coralinos en Colombia (SIMAC). Entre 1998 y el 2004 se monitorearon un total de 32 parcelas permanentes ubicadas a diferentes niveles de profundidad en seis áreas arrecifales del Caribe colombiano. Los patrones temporales de algas y corales fueron evaluados mediante análisis de varianza de medidas repetidas. Los promedios generales indicaron que las algas dominaron en la mayoría de las áreas evaluadas, variando de 30.3% (Rosario) hasta 53.3% (San Andrés). La cobertura coralina fluctuó considerablemente entre 10.1% (Santa Marta) y 43.5% (Urabá). Los arrecifes estudiados han permanecido relativamente estables durante el periodo evaluado en términos de algas y corales. El único cambio significativo en la cobertura se detectó en algunas parcelas de monitoreo del Tayrona, y pocas especies coralinas explicaron la tendencia de disminución. En Rosario se detectó una tendencia significativa de incremento para las algas en la mayoría de las parcelas. En San Andrés y Urabá las tendencias temporales (aumento y disminución respectivamente) se presentaron en ciertos niveles de profundidad. En estas dos áreas las tendencias en la cobertura de las algas fueron explicadas principalmente por cambios en los tapetes algales. En general las causas de los patrones observados no pudieron identificarse. Los programas de monitoreo deben evaluar no solo las tendencias generales de algas y corales sino también las de sus componentes (especies de coral y grupos funcionales de algas). Así mismo, deben enfocarse en evaluar los mecanismos involucrados en los cambios, en especial aquellos relacionados con la recuperación coralina y la resiliencia arrecifal, de manera que se pueda enfrentar el deterioro arrecifal en el actual contexto de cambio climático.</text>

                <text>Trata-se de um estudo descritivo e observacional que possui como objetivo central desenvolver e aplicar um conjunto de ações de comunicação pública da ciência, por meio da arte, focando na segurança alimentar e nutricional, para trabalhadores de dois Bancos de Alimentos, identificados como BA1 e BA2, da Região Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte. A capacitação foi realizada por meio de cinco encontros, com dinâmicas e atividades interligadas, que relacionavam conceitos sobre boas práticas de higiene com obras de grandes artistas. Por meio do método observacional e aplicação de questionários (inicial e final) foi possível identificar o perfil dos participantes, bem como verificar a percepção dos mesmos sobre a metodologia utilizada. Mais de 80% dos participantes relataram não possuir interesse pela arte, porém 100% afirmaram que as atividades propostas interferiram positivamente no seu entusiasmo pelo assunto. Quando questionados sobre a opinião geral do curso, 100% dos trabalhadores consideraram o curso “Bom” ou “Muito Bom” e 90% afirmaram que realizariam outro curso nesses moldes. Além disso, todos os participantes afirmaram que a metodologia facilitou o processo de aprendizagem. Portanto, foi possível concluir que a estratégia utilizada foi uma boa ferramenta para sensibilização e conscientização dos trabalhadores sobre a importância dos cuidados de higiene pessoal e do ambiente de trabalho para a segurança alimentar.  Palavras-chave: Segurança Alimentar; Comunicação Pública; Ciência; Educação     Education in health with art: a partnership between University and Food Banks  Abstract: This descriptive and observational study has as main goal to develop and apply a set of actions about science’s public communication through art, focusing on the food and nutritional security for employees from two Food Banks (FB), identified as FB1 and FB2, in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte. The training was conducted through five meetings using dynamics and activities, relating good hygiene practice with artistic products from renowned artists. Through observational method and questionnaires application (beginning and ending), it was possible to identify the profile of participants, as well as their perceptions about the methodology applied. More than 80% of the participants reported a lack of interest in art; however, 100% declared that the activities interfered positively on their enthusiasm about the subject. When asked about the general opinion of the training, 100% of the employees considered as “Good” or “Very Good” and 90% declared that they would be interested in carrying out similar training. Also, all participants said that the methodology facilitated the learning process. In summary, we may conclude that the applied strategy was a useful tool for the employee’s awareness and consciousness about the importance of hygiene care for food security in the working and personal environment. Cuando cuestionados sobre la opinión general sobre la capacitación, el 100% de los participantes consideraron la capacitación como 'buena' o 'muy buena' y el 90% afirmaron que realizarían otro curso equivalente. Además, todos los participantes afirmaron que la metodología facilitó el proceso de aprendizaje. En resumen, concluimos que la estrategia utilizada fue una relevante herramienta para sensibilizar y concientizar a los trabajadores sobre la importancia de los cuidados de higiene personal y del ambiente de trabajo para la seguridad alimentaria.                 <text>1. Data on Ecology, Behavior and Geographical Distribution of the chelid turtle, Phrynops (Batrachemys) dahli, are reported. 2. The original habitat of the 'carranchina' or 'cabeza al lado' consisted in ponds and small brooks within the forests, a situation which has gradually changed; actually the entire area around the type locality is transformed into pastures. 3. It is principally carnivorous and feeds on snails, aquatic insects, tadpoles, frogs, small fishes, carrion, but also sometimes on vegetable matter. No endoparasites had been found. 4. A marked dimorphism exists between the two sexes (figs. 2, 4, 5). 5. The mating season takes place in June-July approximately. 6. From one to six white, hard-shelled, slightly ellipsoid eggs are laid mainly in September-October; they measure between 35.5 : 29.0 mm. and. 28.0 : 23.5 mm. (fig. 7). 7. In several females, captured in May 22, 1958, which died in June 1959, hard-shelled eggs and numerous ovules had been found. 8. A female, captured in September 24, 1963, laid October 22, 1963, four eggs in a shallow groove without covering them, possibly due to lack of time or the hard soil full of pebbles. Three of those eggs were apparently not fertilized and became dry within two months; the last one was finally opened in August 14, 1964; it measured 34.5 : 26.5 mm. and contained a Fetus almost ready to hatch (fig. 6); its Carapax measured 28.0 mm, (length) and 22.5 mm. (width); the very protruding vitelline sack (12.0 : 11.0 mm.) still covered the Plastron; an easy discernible Oviruptor was present. This does not necessarily mean that the incubation period normally lasts over ten months, but rather seems to indicate that the eggs are resistant enough to develop in spite of a prolonged dry season - common in the given area - without suffering lethal effects. 9. Taken from the great number of ovules in different state of development, together with hard-shelled eggs, it seems to indicate the possibility that the same female lays several times over long periods. Future investigations are, of course, needed before more conclusive statements on this and other problems concerning reproduction can be made. 10. In its natural habitat, dahli is rather scarce and, moreover, hard to detect due to its secret habits. 11. They prefer rather shallow, quiet waters, where they mostly swim slowly close to the bottom with their long necks outstreched and the nose inclined downward in search of food, but are also able to swim quickly by means of their powerful, stronly webbed feet. 12. Equally well adapted to life on ground, they might be considered as virtually amphibious; active mainly from 5.30 - 7 a. m. and 5 - 7 p. m., they walk frequently over long distances; if persecuted, they run first very quickly and with their neck bent; cornered, they show a particular reaction: They stop and stretch out their hind legs until the anterior border of the shell becomes inclined and in contact with the ground; thus, the neck - never entirely covered by the shell - will be more protected; they remain in this position until the persecutor retires. 13. Apparently they undergo an Estivation; in captivity where water is plenty, they also lay hurried frequently in the soil or hidden in the shadow of underbrush under rotten leaves for several weeks, and are easily to confound with stones or rotten pieces of wood, due to the protective coloration of the grayish or olive brown upperside of their shells. 14. A strange habit was observed in specimens kept in the aquarium during the first months after being captured: Adults of both sexes, but more frequently the males, hit the glass or the border of the aquarium with their mandibles by means of very quick movements of the head; thus, the contact between the horny layer of the underside of mandible and the glass produces a series of klicking sounds; they did it only at night (8.00 - 10.00 p. m. approximately), rather frequently and each time for several seconds; this habit became lost after about four months in captivity.  Since movements and sounds produce vibrations in the water, this behavior may possibly be connected with some biological function, as e. g., to facilitate the meeting of the two sexes during mating season, or to announce the presence of an individual within a fixed territory, already occupied; the function could also be a combined one. 15. Specimens have been collected only from the type locality, Sincelejo (Bolivar), 200 meters high, but have been later reported by local inhabitants from different places within the same general region (see map). 16. Chelid turtles were formerly supposed to range only from Colombia, south of Cordillera Oriental, to northern Argentina, but now they are know to extend to north-western Colombia close to the shore of the Caribbean Sea. Since fossil shells of Chelus fimbriatus, together with others of a pelomedusid turtle, Podocemis spec., have been found at La Venta (Huila), a site belonging to Honda group of Late Miocene, situated north of Cordillera Oriental, it seems evident, that the range of the Chelidae extended farther north, before the last formation of the Eastern Andes during Pleistocene. Thus, there exists also the possibility that one or several members of this family had migrated as far as that region, actually still occupied by an isolated form, during Terciary. 1. Data on Ecology, Behavior and Geographical Distribution of the chelid turtle, Phrynops (Batrachemys) dahli, are reported. 2. The original habitat of the 'carranchina' or 'cabeza al lado' consisted in ponds and small brooks within the forests, a situation which has gradually changed; actually the entire area around the type locality is transformed into pastures. 3. It is principally carnivorous and feeds on snails, aquatic insects, tadpoles, frogs, small fishes, carrion, but also sometimes on vegetable matter. No endoparasites had been found. 4. A marked dimorphism exists between the two sexes (figs. 2, 4, 5). 5. The mating season takes place in June-July approximately. 6. From one to six white, hard-shelled, slightly ellipsoid eggs are laid mainly in September-October; they measure between 35.5 : 29.0 mm. and. 28.0 : 23.5 mm. (fig. 7). 7. In several females, captured in May 22, 1958, which died in June 1959, hard-shelled eggs and numerous ovules had been found. 8. A female, captured in September 24, 1963, laid October 22, 1963, four eggs in a shallow groove without covering them, possibly due to lack of time or the hard soil full of pebbles. Three of those eggs were apparently not fertilized and became dry within two months; the last one was finally opened in August 14, 1964; it measured 34.5 : 26.5 mm. and contained a Fetus almost ready to hatch (fig. 6); its Carapax measured 28.0 mm, (length) and 22.5 mm. (width); the very protruding vitelline sack (12.0 : 11.0 mm.) still covered the Plastron; an easy discernible Oviruptor was present. This does not necessarily mean that the incubation period normally lasts over ten months, but rather seems to indicate that the eggs are resistant enough to develop in spite of a prolonged dry season - common in the given area - without suffering lethal effects. 9. Taken from the great number of ovules in different state of development, together with hard-shelled eggs, it seems to indicate the possibility that the same female lays several times over long periods. Future investigations are, of course, needed before more conclusive statements on this and other problems concerning reproduction can be made. 10. In its natural habitat, dahli is rather scarce and, moreover, hard to detect due to its secret habits. 11. They prefer rather shallow, quiet waters, where they mostly swim slowly close to the bottom with their long necks outstreched and the nose inclined downward in search of food, but are also able to swim quickly by means of their powerful, stronly webbed feet. 12. Equally well adapted to life on ground, they might be considered as virtually amphibious; active mainly from 5.30 - 7 a. m. and 5 - 7 p. m., they walk frequently over long distances; if persecuted, they run first very quickly and with their neck bent; cornered, they show a particular reaction: They stop and stretch out their hind legs until the anterior border of the shell becomes inclined and in contact with the ground; thus, the neck - never entirely covered by the shell - will be more protected; they remain in this position until the persecutor retires. 13. Apparently they undergo an Estivation; in captivity where water is plenty, they also lay hurried frequently in the soil or hidden in the shadow of underbrush under rotten leaves for several weeks, and are easily to confound with stones or rotten pieces of wood, due to the protective coloration of the grayish or olive brown upperside of their shells. 14. A strange habit was observed in specimens kept in the aquarium during the first months after being captured: Adults of both sexes, but more frequently the males, hit the glass or the border of the aquarium with their mandibles by means of very quick movements of the head; thus, the contact between the horny layer of the underside of mandible and the glass produces a series of klicking sounds; they did it only at night (8.00 - 10.00 p. m. approximately), rather frequently and each time for several seconds; this habit became lost after about four months in captivity.  Since movements and sounds produce vibrations in the water, this behavior may possibly be connected with some biological function, as e. g., to facilitate the meeting of the two sexes during mating season, or to announce the presence of an individual within a fixed territory, already occupied; the function could also be a combined one. 15. Specimens have been collected only from the type locality, Sincelejo (Bolivar), 200 meters high, but have been later reported by local inhabitants from different places within the same general region (see map). 16. Chelid turtles were formerly supposed to range only from Colombia, south of Cordillera Oriental, to northern Argentina, but now they are know to extend to north-western Colombia close to the shore of the Caribbean Sea. O ciclo nictemeral caracteriza-se pelo aspecto bimodal, com os dois picos correspondentes a cada crepúsculo, ou seja, vespertino e matutino. O seu detalhamento permitiu detectar bimodalidade secundária, subdividindo cada pico em um eocrepuscular precedendo ao intracrepuscular propriamente dito. A variação sazonal revelou aumento do número de mosquitos na estação chuvosa e quente e nítido declínio na seca e fria. Embora com dados insuficientes, houve indícios de que o An. albitarsis local, apresente também ritmo bimodal em seu ciclo diário de atividade.Fortnightly 25-hour catches, with human bait, were carried out in a modified environment of the 'Jacaré-Pepira' River, Dourado County, S. Paulo, Brazil which is the original region of the 'Araraquara' strain of Anopheles darlingi. The exophylic biting activity was mostly nocturnal with bimodal rhythm, showing two clear peaks corresponding, respectively, to dusk and dawn. Going into crepuscular details two secondary peaks were observed, an eocrepuscular preceding the intracrepuscular one As, by means of chromosome arrangement studies, this population was found to have low polymorphism, it is supposed that those rhythms are, in a good measure, of endogenous command. The number of mosquitoes biting increased during the hot, wet season and decreased remarkably during the dry, cold one. There was some evidence that An albitarsis may also show a bimodality in its nocturnal biting activity rhythm.</text>

                <text>The plant communities present along an altitudinal transect between 3.000-3.600 m above sea level around Chingaza lake, Cundinamarca, Colombia, are described following the Zurich-Montpellier System. The zonal plant communities (WALTER. 1964) belong to the life zones refered to as 'Paramo' and 'Andean' by CUATRECASAS (1934, 1958) and RANGEL et al., (1982).  The azonal plant communities (marsh communities) are briefly studied.  New information about synecological aspects and geographic distribution is provided together with a provisional sintaxonomic classification of the vegetation of the area.                 <text>Interspecific variation in leaf life span has wide-ranging implications for plant species sorting on resource availability gradients, and for ecosystem processes such as nutrient cycling. Very little is known about leaf life spans of evergreen trees in the temperate forests of South America. Leaf life spans were estimated by static demographic methods, and associated leaf traits measured, for four conifers of this region. It was expected that leaf life span variation would correlate negatively with soil fertility of habitats normally occupied by each species. This prediction was upheld by the data. The mean leaf life span determined for Araucaria araucana (24 years) is among the highest figures reported for any plant species. This extreme leaf longevity was associated with very robust construction (high leaf mass per unit area) and very low nitrogen content. These aspects of the ecology of A. araucana may affect its fitness in two ways. Firstly, slow foliage turnover will reduce its annual nutrient requirements for crown maintenance, a trait that is thought to be crucial for survival on nutrient-poor sites. Secondly, the low decomposability of A. araucana leaf litter is likely to cause nutrient immobilisation, possibly favouring site retention by A. araucana in the face of competition from faster-growing but more nutrient-demanding species. Interspecific variation in leaf life span appeared to be systematically related to variation in leaf mass per unit area (LMA) and leaf nitrogen, in agreement with a large body of evidence that leaf evolution is constrained by a trade-off between trait combinations which optimise carbon gain and growth in resource-rich habitats, and those which favour persistence in chronically adverse environmentsLas diferencias específicas en longevidad foliar tienen importantes implicancias para la distribución de las plantas en relación con gradientes de recursos, y en procesos ecosistémicos tales como el ciclaje de nutrientes. Se anticipó que las diferencias interespecíficas en longevidad foliar estarían negativamente correlacionadas con la disponibilidad de nutrientes en los hábitats normalmente ocupados por las distintas especies, predicción que fue apoyada por los datos. Esta extrema longevidad se asocia con una construcción muy robusta (LMA alta), y muy bajo contenido de nitrógeno. Dichos aspectos de la ecología de A. araucana podrían incidir de dos maneras en su adecuación. Primero, el lentísimo recambio de su follaje reduciría sus requerimientos anuales de nutrientes, un rasgo que puede ser clave para su supervivencia en sitios muy infértiles. Segundo, la baja descomposabilidad de su hojarasca daría lugar a una inmovilización de nutrientes, posiblemente permitiendo que A. araucana retenga ciertos sitios, frente la competencia de especies potencialmente más vigorosas pero con mayores requerimientos nutricionales. La variación interespecífica en longevidad foliar parecía presentar relaciones estrechas con variación en LMA y porcentaje de nitrógeno foliar. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: El estudio se realizó en 44 municipios del departamento de Antioquia, Colombia, durante los años 2003 y 2004, en una muestra representativa de los hogares rurales y urbanos del departamento de Antioquia, constituida por 1 624 hogares con niños menores de 10 años; los hogares fueron seleccionados de manera aleatoria, con un índice de confianza de 95% y un error de 3%. Se validó la escala de seguridad alimentaria doméstica utilizada por Paulina Lorenzana en Venezuela, y se determinó la consistencia interna de la escala mediante el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman y el coeficiente alfa de Cronbach. La validez del constructo se estableció mediante el método de componentes principales para datos categóricos. Se utilizaron el procedimiento de Prinqual y el modelo de Rasch para definir los componentes y los ��tems de la escala. RESULTADOS: El análisis factorial arrojó dos componentes: 1) las variables relacionadas con 'inseguridad alimentaria sin hambre' que lo explican en 95% y 2) las relacionadas con 'inseguridad alimentaria con hambre' que lo explican en 89.4%. El coeficiente alfa de Cronbach para el primer componente fue de de 0.95 y para el segundo de 0.89. Al ser analizados con el modelo Rasch, todos los ítems presentaron valores infit en un rango de 0.8 a 1.2. La escala se correlacionó significativamente con la disponibilidad de alimentos, el recurso de la limosna, el trabajo infantil, el tamaño del hogar y la ocupación del jefe de familia (p&lt; 0.000).
