En 2010, fue elegido profesor en el departamento de Ciencia y política ambiental de la Universidad George Mason. Es miembro senior de la Fundación de las Naciones Unidas en Washington, D.C. Fue presidente del Heinz Center de 2002 a 2008 y catedrático en Biodiversidad. Antes de asumir la cátedra, Lovejoy fue consejero-jefe del Banco Mundial para la biodiversidad y principal especialista en medio ambiente para América Latina y Caribe. En la década de 1980, Thomas Lovejoy llamó la atención de la comunidad internacional sobre los bosques tropicales del mundo y, particularmete, sobre la Amazonia brasileña, donde trabaja desde 1965. Lovejoy también desarrolló los actuales omnipresentes programas de intercambio “deuda-por-naturaleza” y fue el líder del proyecto Tamaño Mínimo Crítico para los Ecosistemas. En 2001, Lovejoy recibió el prestigioso premio Tyler de Conquista Ambiental. En 2009, fue el ganador del premio BBVA Fronteras del Conocimiento en la categoría ecología y biología de la conservación. Ese mismo año, fue nombrado Conservation Fellow por la National Geographic. En 2012, recibió el premio Planeta Azul. Lovejoy es licenciado y doctor en Biología por la Universidad de Yale.
