This publication is part of a major study (Thesis). In that thesis it was analyzed the intention of Pronaf's beneficiaries to repay the credit they have received. The Pronaf is a line of credit for small farmers implemented by the Brazilian Federal Government in 1996. Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (1991) was used to evaluate the beneficiaries' intention in paying what they owned. In order to accomplish this evaluation, two studies were conducted. The first one (Preliminary Study) focused on the small farmer's beliefs about the program operation. The second (Main Study) focused on the measurement of these beliefs. Two beneficiary groups participated of the studies: Group A (agrarian reform settlers) and Group B (small farmers). According to Ajzen's model, for the participants of the Group A, the Attitude, the Normative belief (subjective norm component) and the Subjective Norm were positive significant predictors of the Intention to repay the credit. For the Group B, the Attitude, Behavioral belief (attitude component), Normative belief (subjective norm component) and Control belief (perceived behavioral control component) were positive significant predictors of the Intention to repay the credit. The Perceived behavioral control did not influence directly the behavioral Intention, but this variable indirectly predicts the target behavior.</text>

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of conventional and organic inputs on weed dynamics during the first and second years of agro-ecological transition. Thus, an experiment was arranged in a six-year-old plantation, where transition to organic farming was initiated. The most important species in the first year of transition was Ageratum conyzoides, in most areas evaluated. In the second year, there was a considerable change in the dominance relationship between the species, especially regarding Leunurus sibiricus, which was the most important species in most areas studied during this period. There was also an increase in the number of species present in most areas in the second year. It was concluded that, during the two years of evaluation, changes were verified in the number, diversity, and importance relation between the species from one year to the other.</text>

AbstractThere is, nowadays, a concern regarding the environmental consequences of the growing process of unordered human settlements at Pequeno River hydrographical basin, in São José dos Pinhais (Parana State, South Brazil). Such concern has been demonstrated in frequent denunciations made by several society groups in local and regional midia. The Pequeno River basin deserves special attention mainly because it plays an important role as a source of superficial water to São José dos Pinhais city, at the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba. Provided this scenario, it is essential to determine the present environmental conditions of the Pequeno River basin in order to qualitatively evaluate the environmental implications resulting from the agricultural practices and land use made by the families in that region. The research for this article focused on demonstrating, through a theoretical point of view inter-relating the environmental variables, the linkage between the natural elements and the present land use dynamics. It was found that this basin is an environmentally fragile area that is going through a severe degradation process due to the various uses of land and soil appropriation, generating a poor water quality and increasing the risk of shortage and thus affecting the water supply. The agricultural activities at the basin rely on intensive soil management with chemical control, and combined with the ongoing urbanization, they generate environmental impacts both related to erosive processes and water contamination risks.</text>
