No entanto, poucos agricultores familiares possuem acesso à mecanização agrícola devido alto custo do investimento inicial.

In this context emerges the urban agriculture (UA) associated to environmental, social and health benefits (SLATER, 2001). The objective of this study is to understand the meaning of the UA phenomenon as a consumption practice, identifying which theories are related to it. In order to reach that goal, a qualitative research used as data collection in-depth interviews. The subjects were experts and practitioners in UA living in 9 neighborhoods in urban areas of a Brazilian city with a population bigger than 1 million inhabitants. Results showed double motivation for the UA practice, extrinsic (example) and intrinsic (well-being), linking the UA to environmental concerns, to health and well-being, and the respect and pride for a nostalgic cultural heritage.</text>

<text>Chemical fertilisers are rarely avaiable to poor farmers, for whom the nitrogen (N) is often the most limiting element for cereal grain production. The objective of this study was to quantify the contribution of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) to groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) and velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) crops using the 15N natural abundance (delta15N) technique and to determine their residual effect and that of a natural fallow, on growth and N accumulation by two rustic maize varieties. The contribution of BNF calculated from delta15N data was 40.9, 59.6 and 30.9 kg ha-1, for groundnut, velvet bean and the natural fallow, respectively. The only legume grain harvested was from the groundnut, which yielded approximately 1.000 kg ha-1. The subsequent maize varieties ('Sol de Manhã' and 'Caiana Sobralha') yielded between 1.958 and 2.971 kg ha-1, and were higher after velvet bean for both maize varieties and 'Sol da Manhã' groundnut, followed by 'Caiana' after groundnut and, finally, the natural fallow. For a small-holder producer the most attractive system is the groundnut followed by maize, as, in this treatment, both groundnut and maize grain harvest are possible. However, a simple N balance calculation indicated that the groundnut-maize sequence would, in the long term, deplete soil N reserves, while the velvet bean-maize sequence would lead to a build up of soil nitrogen.

<text>On 7 January 2020, researchers isolated and sequenced in China from patients with severe pneumonitis a novel coronavirus, then called SARS-CoV-2, which rapidly spread worldwide, becoming a global health emergency. Typical manifestations consist of flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, and dyspnea. However, in about 20% of patients, the infection progresses to severe interstitial pneumonia and can induce an uncontrolled host-immune response, leading to a life-threatening condition called cytokine release syndrome (CRS). CRS represents an emergency scenario of a frequent challenge, which is the complex and interwoven link between infections and autoimmunity. Indeed, treatment of CRS involves the use of both antivirals to control the underlying infection and immunosuppressive agents to dampen the aberrant pro-inflammatory response of the host. Several trials, evaluating the safety and effectiveness of immunosuppressants commonly used in rheumatic diseases, are ongoing in patients with COVID-19 and CRS, some of which are achieving promising results. However, such a use should follow a multidisciplinary approach, be accompanied by close monitoring, be tailored to patient’s clinical and serological features, and be initiated at the right time to reach the best results. Autoimmune patients receiving immunosuppressants could be prone to SARS-CoV-2 infections; however, suspension of the ongoing therapy is contraindicated to avoid disease flares and a consequent increase in the infection risk.</text>

<text>This study proposes to recover the Mandacarú Stream, located in the city of Maringá, Paraná State, Brazil by developing a greenway. The stream in question has been extremely degraded, principally by human activity. The proposed methodology begins with preparing a scenario for the valley floor with a greenway in place. This is followed by an investigation of the corridor’s ecological and cultural variables, taking a holistic view to synthesise and diagnose the information collected. Guidelines for recovering the valley floor and developing the greenway are then drawn up to direct the preparation of the final plan. As a result, the principal environmental impacts that undermine the quality of the study area were surveyed, such as erosion, loss of riparian vegetation, illegal sewage connections and lack of environmental education. A list of guidelines was developed for recovering and conserving the area, in combination with the development of a greenway along the valley floor. It is hoped that these guidelines can assist a future intervention at this location and that the proposed method can be used as the basis for the recovery of other urban valley floors.O presente estudo propõe a recuperação do fundo de vale do córrego Mandacarú, localizado na cidade de Maring, Estado do Paraná, por meio da implantação de um parque linear.

The prevalence of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL) has been historically associated with the degradation of the environment in urban and agricultural areas. The ATL is an illness of obliged notification, remaining endemic in Maringá. The aim of this work was to identify the nature of the cases of Leishmaniose occurred in the residential complex Inocente Vila Nova Júnior and the actions carried out for the vector’s control. The ATL samples were collected with the data base of the Secretaria Municipal de Saúde, Coordenação Municipal de Epidemiologia, Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN), from 2001 to 2003. After the investigation of the cases, considered autochthonous, combat actions against the vector in the local bush area. Results show that the urban area, considered as reference and sociability between men and nature, starts to have the quality of aggravating space when it creates life forms inside of a non-balanced system that can infect the men. Thus, it is important to have scientific studies and planning for these areas, protecting its functions and impacts to the society.</text>
