A strong socio-economic development pressure in South Chile will more and more cause an impact to the present lakes and rivers. Nevertheless, our knowledge concerning the ecological structure and the microbial self-purification capabilities of these lacustrine water bodies is scant but essential for a future sustainable development of land and water use. We studied Lake Laja, a lake already heavily impacted by water diversions for hydropower generation and irrigation. Typical for the Andean region Lake Laja is an oligotrophic water body, limited by nitrogen nutrients. Only very low chlorophyll a and particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations and a small abundance and biomass of bacteria (mainly ultramicrobacteria) and heterotrophic flagellates were encountered. Weak trophic interrelations were derived from a high bacteria-to-heterotrophic flagellate ratio. For the ten investigated extracellular enzymes (alkaline phosphatase, leucine, arginine-, glycine and tyrosine-aminopeptidase, α-, β-D-glucosidase, α-, β-D-galactosidase, N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase), with the exception of α-D-glucosidase, a broad range of organic matter degradation activities was proven. Probably, due to the N-limitation, organic nitrogen hydrolysing extracellular enzymes reached activities on average of 45 % compared to other studies in oligotrophic waters. The possible effect of N-limitation on extracellular enzyme activities was more pronounced by cell specific extracellular enzymatic activity rates, which exceeded those of other oligotrophic water bodies on average by factor 2. The overall activities of all microbial extracellular enzymes studied proved to be dominated by the dissolved free external enzymes (up to 98 %) over the ectoenzymes which are associated with particulate organic matter (bacterial cell walls, particles, and aggregates). It is concluded that future socio-economic changes, dealing with watershed human intervention (accelerating inorganic and organic loads) as well as global change (temperature and precipitation changes) could lead to significant changes in the ecology of Lake Laja.La gran presión generada por el desarrollo socioeconómico del sur de Chile, está causando cada vez más un mayor impacto en los lagos y ríos allí presentes. Sin embargo, el conocimiento de la estructura ecológica y la capacidad microbiana de autodepuración de los cuerpos de agua lacustres es escasa, pero esencial para un futuro uso sostenible de los recursos agua y suelo. Se estudió el lago Laja, por ser un cuerpo de agua muy afectado por la extracción de agua para la generación de energía hidroeléctrica y el riego. Como es característico de la región andina, el lago Laja es oligotrófico limitado por nutrientes nitrogenados. Se encontraron bajas concentraciones de clorofila a y carbono orgánico particulado (POC), así como bajas abundancias y biomasa de bacterias (principalmente ultramicrobacteria) y de flagelados heterotróficos. Interrelaciones tróficas débiles se determinaron de la relación bacterias y flagelados heterotróficos. Para las diez enzimas extracelulares estudiadas (fosfatasa, leucina-, arginina-, glicina- y tirosina-aminopeptidasa, a-, b-D-glucosidasa, a-, b-D-galactosidasa, N-acetyl-b-D-glucosaminidasa), con la excepción de α-β-glucosidase, se analizó un amplio rango de actividad de degradación sobre la materia orgánica. Probablemente, debido a la limitación de nitrógeno, el N-orgánico hidrolizado por enzimas extracelulares alcanzó una actividad promedio de 45 %, comparada con otros estudios en aguas oligotróficas. El posible efecto de la limitación de N en la actividad enzimática extracelular, fue más pronunciado en las tasas de la actividad enzimática extracelular específicas, las cuales excedieron en un factor promedio de dos a las de otros cuerpos de aguas oligotróficos. En general, la actividad de todas las enzimas extracelulares microbianas estudiadas resultaron estar dominadas por enzimas externas disueltas libres (hasta el 98 %), más que por ectoenzimas asociadas a partículas de materia orgánica (paredes celulares de bacterias, partículas y agregados). De esta manera es posible concluir que los futuros cambios socioeconómicos, reflejados en el incremento de cargas orgánicas e inorgánicas, así como el efecto del cambio global (cambios en temperaturas y precipitaciones), podrían provocar cambios significativos en la ecología del lago Laja.

La estimación de la vulnerabilidad de los cultivos por efectos del cambio climático ha sido realizada principalmente para los cultivos de temporal, asumiendo que no existe alteración de la fertilidad del suelo atribuible al cambio climático. El objetivo principal del presente trabajo fue estimar el papel de modificación del índice integral de fertilidad del suelo en los cálculos de la productividad de los cultivos de maíz de grano y trigo en varios distritos de riego de México. Se ha desarrollado una metodología para predecir la alteración de algunas propiedades del suelo bajo riego y su índice integral de fertilidad, atribuibles al cambio climático. Los resultados de la investigación señalan que la sensibilidad de los suelos agrícolas bajo riego en México al cambio climático es menor que los suelos agrícolas de temporal y suelos sin uso agrícola (vírgenes); sin afectar significativamente la vulnerabilidad de los cultivos al cambio climático. La principal afectación por la alteración de la fertilidad del suelo en estimaciones de vulnerabilidad de los cultivos bajo riego se espera en las zonas climáticas semiárida, semihúmeda y húmeda tropical de México, donde el índice climático adimensional promedio anual IHT es menor de 2.5.

De acuerdo con las estrategias internacionales en materia de salud y medio ambiente, los Ministerios de Sanidad y de Medio Ambiente pusieron en marcha en 2007 los mecanismos necesarios para la elaboración del Plan Nacional de Salud y Medio Ambiente. El primer paso ha sido la firma de un acuerdo de encomienda de gestión con el Instituto de Salud Carlos III para que éste diseñara las bases sobre las que sustentar el plan. El comité científico creado al efecto ha redactado un informe de bases para lo que ha contado con el concurso de un nutrido grupo de expertos. Las propuestas que se recogen en el informe constituyen el contenido del presente trabajo. Las propuestas hacen referencia a los ítems considerados prioritarios en la Estrategia Europea de Medio Ambiente y Salud, es decir, cáncer, alteraciones endocrinas, trastornos del desarrollo neurológico y enfermedades respiratorias, y se organizan en torno a los principales factores de riesgo ambiental para la salud: agua, compuestos químicos tóxicos persistentes, campos electromagnéticos, radicaciones ionizantes, ruido y cambio climático y temperaturas extremas. Para dar consistencia al plan se señalan algunas medidas imprescindibles que aseguren su viabilidad administrativa, política, técnica y financiera. Para darle coherencia, se arbitran unas líneas prioritarias comunes y unas estrategias metodológicas compatibles. Para darle forma, se señalan los programas nacionales que deberán implementarse y que deberán basarse en esa consistencia y coherencia. Más que entrar a concretar lo que se debe hacer —materia propia del futuro plan—, el informe señala cómo se debe hacer para lograr resultados exitosos.

Global warming induced by human activity has brought about irreversible environmental changes whose consequences are still being analyzed. Of all the affected areas, the coasts are the most volatile zones due to increasing seawater temperatures and rising sea levels. These climatic changes bring about ecological shifts, strongly impacting the biological equilibrium of coastal ecosystems. These same coastal areas are the naturally occurring habitat of the most important human pathogens of Vibrio: V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus. For the last year, the interaction of the oceans and climactic anomalies on the dynamics of diseases associated with these pathogens has been studied with the use of oceanographic data provided by satellites. Studies carried out in Peru using these new tools have allowed the epidemic expansion of V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus infections in South America to be linked to the arrival and spread of the El Niño waters. Further investigation using remote sensing data to analyze the dynamic of V. parahaemolyticus outbreaks in the USA, Spain and Chile has led to the conclusion that infections in these areas have also concurred with the presence of oceanic anomalies. The movement of oceanic waters has therefore been identified as a potential vehicle for the dispersion of Vibrio infections on a global scale, opening new channels for exploring and predicting new epidemic outbreaks of these diseases.

Some basics aspects on the ecology of the nocturnal gecko Phyllodactylus reissi from Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape (Tumbes, Peru) are described. This species used rock boulders (57,4%) and trees (31,9%) as microhabitats primarily, exhibiting a nocturnal activity pattern, with a peak between 2100-2200 hours, remaining active until midnight. Body temperature (mean 24,4 ºC) was correlated with both air and substrate temperature, with the last variable affecting in higher degree (47%) the body temperature of this species. The slightly high body temperature of Phyllodactylus reissi, compared to other Phyllodactylus geckos, could be related to nocturnal microhabitat use and diurnal retreat site selection. More studies on lizard ecology from this endangered ecosystem are needed.

El dióxido de carbono (CO2) es considerado uno de los principales gases causantes del efecto invernadero, responsable de los fenómenos de calentamiento global y cambio climático; por ello se han propuesto distintas estrategias de captura y almacenamiento físico o químico de CO2, especialmente en las emisiones provenientes de corrientes de combustión. Este documento presenta, en primer lugar, una revisión de los procesos de captura de CO2 en procesos de combustión, y, luego, dos escenarios de estudio para la captura de CO2 en un proceso de poscombustión usando metanol como combustible. En el primer escenario se separa el CO2 utilizando absorción con monoetanolamina, y en el segundo se utiliza destilación. Los resultados indican que ambas tecnologías son apropiadas, pero que el rendimiento es mayor con la destilación.

The main objective of this work was to bring to date the exhaust and evaporative volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles from light-duty gasoline vehicles, carrying out a sampling and analysis campaign in two tunnels of Mexico City. The abundance of exhaust-emission VOC profiles was the same in 2018 as in 1998 (alkanes > aromatics > olefins > acetylene), albeit exhibiting large differences (67%, 17%, 12%, and 4% for 2018, and 50%, 26%, 16%, and 8% for 1998, respectively). An important reduction of 69% and 77% in VOC concentrations was registered inside and outside of the tunnel, respectively, in comparison with 1998. In the ambient air, alkanes accounted for 77%, since high concentrations of liquefied petroleum (LP) gas species are still present. Ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, and toluene from tunnel emissions contributed prominently to ozone formation, while the most reactive gasoline vapors were pentenes, pentanes, and butenes, although the ozone formation potential due to VOCs in tunnel emissions and ambient air also had a significant reduction. These results demonstrate that strategies carried out in the last 20 years were successful in achieving a better air quality, although the aromatic and olefin content in gasolines needs to be further reduced to lower the concentrations of toxic and reactive species.

This research has the objective of analyzing whether the public policies that today define the rules for productive development in agriculture can mitigate the effects related to global warming and if these are sufficient to prevent the pressing of climate change over the difficulties already existing in the agricultural sector or, to prevent the emergence of new risk factors or threats that affect the country’s food security. It also seeks to propose some recommendations for the design of public policies to minimize the risks and threats related to the adaptation of agricultural production to climate change and, therefore, to ensure physical, social and economic access to sufficient food and nutritious foods that meet the needs of the national population and mitigate its effects on the multidimensional sphere of the security. In this sense, we try to answer the following question: What challenges does climate change pose to Chilean agriculture in terms of food security?
