The present study sought to determine knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) of health care workers (HCWs) toward COVID-19 in Makerere University Teaching Hospitals (MUTHs) in Uganda.Methods: An online cross sectional, descriptive study was undertaken through WhatsApp Messenger among HCWs in four MUTHs. HCWs aged 18 years and above constituted the study population. KAP toward COVID-19 was assessed by using a pre-validated questionnaire. Bloom's cut-off of 80% was used to determine sufficient knowledge (≥80%), positive attitude (≥4), and good practice (≥2.4). All analyses were performed using STATA 15.1 and GraphPad Prism 8.3.Results: Of the 581 HCWs approached, 136 (23%) responded. A vast majority of the participants were male (n = 87, n = 64%), with a median age of 32 (range: 20–66) years. Eighty-four (62%) were medical doctors and 125 (92%) had at least a bachelor's degree. Overall, 69% (n = 94) had sufficient knowledge, 21% (n = 29) had positive attitude, and 74% (n = 101) had good practices toward COVID-19. Factors associated with knowledge were age &gt;40 years (aOR: 0.3; 95% CI: 0.1–1.0; p = 0.047) and news media (aOR: 4.8; 95% CI: 1.4–17.0; p = 0.015). Factors associated with good practices were age 40 years or more (aOR: 48.4; 95% CI: 3.1–742.9; p = 0.005) and holding a diploma (aOR: 18.4; 95% CI: 1–322.9; p = 0.046).Conclusions: Continued professional education is advised among HCWs in Uganda to improve knowledge of HCWs hence averting negative attitudes and promoting positive preventive and therapeutic practices. We recommend follow up studies involving teaching and non-teaching hospitals across the country. Entre los principales mecanismos que han sido sugeridos como los inductores de cambios en el ciclo hidrológico de las cuencas y en la magnitud y frecuencia de las crecidas se encuentran los efectos de la intervención humana (p. ej., cambio de uso de suelo, embalses), el efecto de la variabilidad climática de baja frecuencia (p. ej., El Niño-Oscilación del Sur, Oscilación Decadal del Pacífico) y el cambio climático debido al incremento de los gases a la atmósfera. El objetivo del presente estudio yace en el desarrollo de un marco para análisis de frecuencia bajo condiciones de no estacionaridad por medio de los Modelos Aditivos Generalizados en Localización, Escala y Forma (GAMLSS por sus siglas en inglés). Dos diferentes aproximaciones para la modelación estadística no estacionaria fueron las aplicadas a los registros de caudales instantáneos máximos anuales en las regiones hidrológicas Sinaloa y Presidio San Pedro en el noroeste del Pacífico mexicano. Estos modelos consisten básicamente en el modelo con incorporación de tendencias temporales en los parámetros de las distribuciones paramétricas y el modelo con incorporación del forzamiento de la variabilidad climática de baja frecuencia. Los resultados en la primera aproximación muestran la capacidad de los modelos para describir la variabilidad presente en los regímenes de crecidas; asimismo, se observa la alta dependencia de los parámetros de las distribuciones paramétricas respecto del tiempo, lo cual sugiere la ausencia de estacionaridad en los regímenes de crecidas en las estaciones de aforo de estudio. En el segundo enfoque, en el cual los índices climáticos (Niño12, Niño3, Niño3.4, SOI y PDO) que describen el comportamiento de los patrones de variabilidad de baja frecuencia fueron incorporados como covariables explicativas en los modelos, permiten resaltar el importante papel de los fenómenos de macroescala que ocurren en el Pacífico, en la variabilidad interanual de los regímenes de las crecidas en la costa del Pacífico mexicano. Children with symptoms suggestive of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) may have tuberculosis, other respiratory tract infections or co-infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other pathogens. We aimed to identify the presence of potential respiratory pathogens in nasopharyngeal (NP) samples from children with suspected PTB. Method NP samples collected from consecutive children presenting with suspected PTB at Red Cross Children’s Hospital (Cape Town, South Africa) were tested by multiplex real-time RT-PCR. Mycobacterial liquid culture and Xpert MTB/RIF was performed on 2 induced sputa obtained from each participant. Children were categorised as definite-TB (culture or qPCR [Xpert MTB/RIF] confirmed), unlikely-TB (improvement of symptoms without TB treatment on follow-up) and unconfirmed-TB (all other children). Results Amongst 214 children with a median age of 36 months (interquartile range, [IQR] 19–66 months), 34 (16 %) had definite-TB, 86 (40 %) had unconfirmed-TB and 94 (44 %) were classified as unlikely-TB. Moraxella catarrhalis (64 %), Streptococcus pneumoniae (42 %), Haemophilus influenzae spp (29 %) and Staphylococcus aureus (22 %) were the most common bacteria detected in NP samples. Other bacteria detected included Mycoplasma pneumoniae (9 %), Bordetella pertussis (7 %) and Chlamydophila pneumoniae (4 %). The most common viruses detected included metapneumovirus (19 %), rhinovirus (15 %), influenza virus C (9 %), adenovirus (7 %), cytomegalovirus (7 %) and coronavirus O43 (5.6 %). Both bacteria and viruses were detected in 73, 55 and 56 % of the definite, unconfirmed and unlikely-TB groups, respectively. There were no significant differences in the distribution of respiratory microbes between children with and without TB. Using quadratic discriminant analysis, human metapneumovirus, C. pneumoniae, coronavirus 043, influenza virus C virus, rhinovirus and cytomegalovirus best discriminated children with definite-TB from the other groups of children. Conclusions A broad range of potential respiratory pathogens was detected in children with suspected TB. There was no clear association between TB categorisation and detection of a specific pathogen. Further work is needed to explore potential pathogen interactions and their role in the pathogenesis of PTB. Göbel Description An account of the resource Oligonucleotide conjugates of tris(2-aminobenzimidazole) have been reported previously to cleave complementary RNA strands with high levels of sequence and site specificity. The RNA substrates used in these studies were oligonucleotides not longer than 29-mers. Here we show that ~150&#8315;400-mer model transcripts derived from the 3&#8242;-untranslated region of the PIM1 mRNA reacted with rates and specificities comparable to those of short oligonucleotide substrates. The replacement of DNA by DNA/LNA mixmers further increased the cleavage rate. Tris(2-aminobenzimidazoles) were designed to interact with phosphates and phosphate esters. A cell, however, contains large amounts of phosphorylated species that may cause competitive inhibition of RNA cleavage. It is thus important to note that no loss in reaction rates was observed in phosphate buffer. This opens the way to in-cell applications for this type of artificial nuclease. Furthermore, we disclose a new synthetic method giving access to tris(2-aminobenzimidazoles) in multigram amounts. This study aims to evaluate the association of the TyG index with the severity and mortality of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods The study included a cohort of 151 patients with COVID-19 admitted in a tertiary teaching hospital in Wuhan. Regression models were used to investigate the association between TyG with severity and mortality of COVID-19. Results In this cohort, 39 (25.8%) patients had diabetes, 62 (41.1%) patients were severe cases, while 33 (22.0%) patients died in hospital.
