Moura Description An account of the resource Mundaú and Manguaba Lagoons (9° 34' 38'-9° 45' 30' S and 35° 44' 00'-35° 58' 13' W) are considered the largest and most productive ones in the state of Alagoas and were studied with the purpose of identifying the existence of anthropic impacts. Samples were collected at 8 stations, during low tide and flooding in rainy and dry periods, using the 'Van Dorn' bottle and plankton net. In total, 155 taxons were identified, with special emphasis on Bacillariophyta and Cyanophyta divisions. The most abundant species in Mundaú Lagoon was Skeletonema cf. costatum, and in the Manguaba Lagoon, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Microcystis aeruginosa and Anabaena spiroides. The diversity ranged from 0.17 bits cell/L to 4.81 bits cell/L. The predominance of freshwater species (51%), evidenced higher influence of the limnetic flow on the two environments studied. The high values related to the phytoplanktonic density characterize the lagoons as strongly impacted environments, indicating the existence of eutrophic conditions in most of the studied stations.As lagunas Mundaú e Manguaba (9° 34' 38'-9° 45' 30' S e 35° 44' 00'-35° 58' 13' W) são consideradas as maiores e mais produtivas do Estado de Alagoas e foram estudadas com o objetivo de identificar a existência de impactos antrópicos, nos períodos chuvoso e seco, com base na composição, diversidade e densidade fitoplanctônica. Coletas de material fitoplanctônico foram realizadas em 8 estações fixas, durante maré vazante e enchente nos períodos chuvoso e seco. As amostras foram coletadas com garrafa de 'Van Dorn' e rede de plâncton. Foram identificados 155 táxons destacando-se as divisões Bacillariophyta e Cyanophyta. A espécie mais abundante na laguna Mundaú foi Skeletonema cf. costatum; na laguna Manguaba foram Cyclotella meneghiniana, Microcystis aeruginosa e Anabaena spiroides. A diversidade oscilou ente 0,17 bits cell/L e 4,81 bits cell/L. A predominância de espécies dulciaquícolas, (51%) evidenciou maior influência do fluxo limnético nos dois ambientes estudados. Os altos valores da densidade fitoplanctônica caracterizam as lagunas como ambientes fortemente impactados, indicando a existência de condições eutróficas na maioria das estações estudadas. Aunque mantuvo su dependencia de alimentos vegetales, B. behreae diversificó su dieta de dos formas. Primero, pasó de partes suaves de plantas a semillas, hojas y frutos. Luego, los ítemes cambiaron de insectos hacia una dieta más carnívora (peces y camarones). Estos hallazgos para ambas especies enfatizan la importancia de proteger la vegetación riparia de estos ecosistemas tropicales.Fish diets can vary in food quality, quantity and size. The variation can be caused by several factors, including season and the ontogenic phase of the individual (McCormick 1998). We studied the ontogenic changes in feeding habits of two freshwater fishes, Agonostomus monticola and Brycon behreae, from the Térraba River basin, South Pacific of Costa Rica. Both populations were omnivorous, but displayed ontogenic shifts in terms of quantity and quality of the food items consumed. As it grew, A. monticola modified its diet from insectivorous towards a higher consumption of vegetables, which was accompanied by an increase in relative length of the intestine. While remaining dependent on vegetation as staple food, B. behreae diversified its diet in two ways. Initially, from soft plant parts to seeds, leaves, and fruits. Secondly, prey items changed from insects into a more carnivore diet (fish and shrimp). Foram obtidos também dados sobre os ciclos anuais e a sobrevivência, O aspecto cíclico caracterizou-se pela maior produção de formas adultas no último trimestre do ano, ocasião que coincide com o encontro dessa espécie no ambiente domiciliar. Face a tais achados, considera-se que o período de produção de adultos representa a fase 'infestante' para o ambiente domiciliar 'suscetível', este representado pelas áreas tratadas, ou seja, as previamente submetidas ao expurgo. Nesse período, ocorre o risco da reinfestação e subseqüente domiciliação desse triatomíneo, a partir do ambiente extradomiciliar. Tais informações permitem sua utilização nas atividades de vigilância epidemiológica.Spontaneous colonies of Panstrongylus megistus developed in experimental fowlhouses were observed for the conditions of their development, variation and permanence of their components. Data were also obtained on their annual cycles and survival. The annual cyclical rhythm showed an increase of adult production in the last quarter of the year, with a similar pattern of females findings in the dwellings. This cyclic colony dynamic makes possible the identification of the 'infestant' period for the 'susceptible' domiciliary environment composed of the previously cleaned dwellings. The reinfestation risk from extradomiciliary P. megistus in this Southern region of Brazil occurs at this time. These information allows their utilization for surveillance activities to prevent house reinfestation. El cerro Tren Tren (40°12' S, 71°26' O, 1.367 m, Reserva Mapuche Curruhuinca, Argentina) está ocupado por un bosque cerrado compuesto por Nothofagus dombeyi, N. nervosa y N. obliqua. En 1994 se estimó la densidad de renovales (diámetro en la base del tallo < 10 cm) en 90 ind ha-1. Posteriormente, se implementaron cortas de selección en bosquetes y los 10 claros artificiales resultantes de entre 1.587 y 4.322 m² se clausuraron al ganado. En 2002 las estructuras de tamaño y edad de los renovales se estimaron a través de muestreos sistemáticos y aleatorios. Las tres especies de Nothofagus se establecieron en forma simultánea en los claros artificiales. Sin embargo, la especie más tolerante a la sombra N. nervosa exhibió una edad media ligeramente mayor debido a su persistencia como 'regeneración avanzada' antes de las cortas. La densidad de renovales se estimó en 97.006 ind ha-1 (68 % N. dombeyi, 20 % N. obliqua y 12 % N. nervosa). Los renovales mostraron una abundancia y composición independiente de la forma y tamaño de los claros, y de la abundancia relativa de árboles adultos que conformaban el rodal y el límite de los claros. En la zona clausurada los renovales ramoneados representaron el 15 % mientras que en la zona no clausurada el 33 %, una diferencia atribuible al efecto protector de la clausura. El 86 % de los renovales se localizaron en las áreas con niveles bajos e intermedios de altura y cobertura del sotobosque. El plan de manejo se considera adecuado si se compara el proceso de regeneración del bosque antes y después de su implementación, y se abren perspectivas alentadoras para la conservación de la comunidad dominada por Nothofagus bajo este sistema silviculturalUnderstanding forest regeneration is essential to develop sound, ecologically-based silvicultural practices. Mount Tren Tren (40°12' S, 71°26' W, 1,367 m, Reservation Mapuche Curruhuinca, Argentina) is occupied by a closed stand of Nothofagus dombeyi, N. obliqua, and N. nervosa. In 1994, tree regeneration (root collar diameter < 10 cm) was estimated to be 90 ind ha-1. After that, a group selection silvicultural system was implemented and the resulting 10 artificial gaps of between 1,587 and 4,322 m² were enclosed to prevent grazing by domestic livestock. Size and age structure of regeneration were analysed based on systematic and random samplings. All tree species became established simultaneously within the artificial gaps. However, the less light demanding N. nervosa exhibited a mean age slightly larger given its differential persistence as 'advanced regeneration' previous to cutting treatment. Tree regeneration was estimated in 97,006 ind ha-1 (68 % of N. dombeyi, 20 % of N. obliqua, and 12 % of N. nervosa). Regeneration abundance and composition were unrelated to shape and size of regeneration gaps, nor to abundance of adult trees within the stand and along the gap boundaries. A significant positive effect of the enclosure on plant was observed. The 86 % of juvenile Nothofagus were present when understory height and cover were low to intermediate.
