El objetivo del presente trabajo es contribuir al conocimiento sobre el estado de adopción de la variedad de berenjena C015, generada por Agrosavia en el año 2011, bajo el enfoque de fitomejoramiento participativo con agricultores, quienes seleccionaron el material por altos rendimientos, mayor número de frutos por planta y coloración lila. Se realizó un estudio con 27 agricultores seleccionados por el método de muestreo al azar, en los departamentos de Córdoba y Sucre de la región Caribe de Colombia, a quienes se aplicó una encuesta durante el año 2018. Los datos se analizaron en el programa SPSS, se les aplicó estadística descriptiva, medidas de tendencia central, entre las cuales están el promedio, la mediana, los valores máximos y mínimos, como también la técnica de tablas de contingencia. Los resultados mostraron que en promedio los agricultores llevan once años cultivando la berenjena y solo un 30 % conoce la variedad C015, pero no la siembra; el 34 % de los encuestados se enteró de la existencia de la variedad por un vecino. Un 62 % afirma que la decisión de sembrar la variedad la toma directamente el agricultor. Se concluye que la adopción no ha sido exitosa, con una tendencia de no volver a sembrar (77 %) después de cinco años de liberada, el 23 % restante condiciona la siembra de este material a la disponibilidad de semilla certificada. Las bajas en la adopción se atribuyen a problemas de demanda, debido a falta de atributos como forma, tamaño y color.

En la actualidad no existe ningún registro de estudios de aceptación y/o adopción de sistemas agroforestales o bien sobre las obras físicas, prácticas y tecnologías de conservación de suelo y agua de parte de agricultores que tienen establecidos estos sistemas de producción de alguno de los siete municipios de la zona seca del occidente de Nicaragua, de ahí la necesidad de realizar estudios de aceptación y adopción en la zona. Los objetivos del estudio fueron describir las obras agronómicas y físicas de conservación de suelo más utilizadas por los agricultores en los sistemas productivos adaptativos de Granos Básicos con Árboles Dispersos (GBAD), y Granos Básicos en Callejones Mejorados (GBCM), y evaluar el grado de aceptación y adopción de los dos sistemas productivos adaptativos promovidos por el Proyecto Manejo Sostenible de la Tierra (MST); y ejecutado por las familias productoras de siete municipios de la zona seca de León, Chinandega y un municipio de Managua en el período 2006-2008. Este estudio es descriptivo y de corte transversal con valoraciones cualitativas y cuantitativas en relación al uso actual y potencial de los sistemas productivos. La metodología de investigación utilizada fue la del análisis de la toma de decisiones por medio del método rápido de sistemas diversos. Dicha metodología está diseñada para tomar decisiones utilizando indicadores sencillos para priorizar los problemas a nivel de finca con base a tres criterios: prioridad, capacidad de manejo y disposición del medio. Para evaluar el grado de aceptación y adopción se utilizó la metodología del Programa para la Agricultura Sostenible en Laderas de Centro América PASOLAC. Los agricultores que poseen grandes extensiones de tierra fueron los que menos adoptaron y aceptaron las tecnologías difundidas, mientras que agricultores con fincas de menor extensión territorial mostraron mayor grado de aceptación y adopción de los Sistemas Agroforestales (SAF). Los organismos capacitadores que han tenido mayor presencia en las zonas de estudio son el Instituto Nicaragüense de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA), junto al proyecto MST, estos han ido de la mano para la divulgación de las nuevas tecnologías. Menor presencia tuvo el organismo Unidad Ambiental (UAM). La adopción de ambos sistemas agroforestales fue de 100 % en casi todos los municipios. Un consolidado de la adopción de todos los municipios muestra que 73% de los mismos han adoptado ambos sistemas (GBAD y GBCM). Un alto porcentaje de los agricultores encuestados mantienen las tecnologías promovidas, expandiendo así ambos sistemas agroforestales en sus parcelas productivas, logrando un manejo sostenible de la tierra. La literatura señala que la innovación tiene como base el conocimiento, para promover cambios que generen mayores beneficios en las empresas. En este trabajo, se analiza el nivel de adopción de innovaciones y los factores asociados en 94 empresas familiares agropecuarias y agroindustriales mexicanas, participantes en una capacitación enfocada en aspectos técnicos, administrativos, organizacionales y familiares. Se encuestó al 63% de estas empresas y se analizó la información a través de indicadores de innovación, comparación de medias y correlaciones. Los resultados mostraron impactos significativos en la adopción de innovaciones en los cuatro aspectos; además, se encontró que la escolaridad, los años en la actividad y el número de familiares involucrados en la empresa se asocian con mayores niveles de innovación.

El estudio se realizó con el objetivo de determinar qué nuevas prácticas agroecológicas fueron adoptadas en el proceso de reconversión de tres unidades básicas de producción cooperativa (UBPC) del centro y el este de Cuba. Estas se localizaban en las provincias de Las Tunas (UBPC Maniabo), Camagüey (UBPC Primero de Enero) y Ciego de Ávila (UBPC La Estrella). Sus objetos sociales los constituían la producción ganadera (leche y carne), y la producción de frutales, cítricos y cultivos varios. Fueron cuantificadas las prácticas agroecológicas al inicio, y se comparó el porcentaje de adopción de las nuevas prácticas después de cuatro años. Se utilizó el análisis de comparación de proporciones, y los datos se procesaron a través del paquete estadístico SPSS® versión 11.5.1 para Microsoft Windows®. Las UBPC Estrella y Primero de Enero incorporaron 30 y 24 nuevas prácticas, respectivamente; mientras que Maniabo incorporó solo 13, ya que tenía implementadas 36 de las recomendadas. Las más introducidas fueron el establecimiento de sistemas agroforestales, el control biológico de plagas y la rotación de cultivos. Se concluye que en todas las UBPC en estudio se implementaron diversas prácticas agroecológicas como consecuencia del proceso de reconversión. La concepción del incremento de la biodiversidad y la complejidad del sistema productivo condicionó el desarrollo de la reconversión agroecológica en las entidades objeto de estudio.

La adopción de tecnologías sustentables como la Agricultura de Conservación en zonas de sequía extrema de la agricultura suburbana, constituye una necesidad para el manejo sostenible de tierras. Con el objetivo de contribuir a la adopción de esta tecnología en la CCS Ignacio Agramonte, localidad El Carmen, municipio Nuevitas, se utilizaron herramientas de la Extensión Agraria; como el Diagnóstico sistémico y la orientación participativa. Se realizaron tres talleres, donde quedó elaborada la matriz DAFO y se identificaron las prácticas de Agricultura de Conservación a adoptar según las condiciones reales de la CCS. Se obtuvo como resultado cinco problemas fundamentales: falta de agua para el riego, aguas salinas, suelos salinos, uso de tecnologías de manejo de suelo no apropiadas, deforestación y poca capacitación de los agricultores. El máximo impacto de la matriz DAFO se produce en el cuadrante Debilidades – Amenazas con un 81,3 %. Además se logró el reconocimiento de agricultores, pobladores y funcionarios locales, que el uso de las herramientas de extensión agraria, aportan elementos positivos y una vía eficaz que contribuye a elevar la motivación y los niveles de conocimientos acerca de la tecnología de agricultura de conservación como alternativa para mitigar el estado de degradación de la tierra en la CCS Ignacio Agramonte.

La adopción de tecnologías constituye un factor importante en la rentabilidad y producción de las empresas ganaderas. Se estudió el grado de adopción y el tipo de prácticas tecnológicas implementadas por los productores beneficiados del PROGAN que poseen más de 30 vientres. Este trabajo hace una tipificación de los beneficiarios analizando las características socioeconómicas (escolaridad, ingreso e infraestructura), productivas (alimentación, sanidad, genética, sobrepastoreo, manejo y administración) y la cantidad y tipo de prácticas adoptadas. Se hace un ajuste de los datos del productor a través del análisis de cluster aplicando el método Two Step Cluster. Se caracterizaron tres grandes grupos: productores con indicadores productivos altos, medios (ambos con alto grado de adopción) y bajos (menor número de prácticas tecnológicas adoptadas). Con respecto al ingreso, el estudio permitió diferenciar también a tres grandes grupos: productores con ingresos altos; con ingresos medios, y de bajos ingresos. Los ganaderos con mayor ingreso son los que cumplieron con la adopción de tecnologías, aunque en promedio ninguno asumió las 10 obligatorias.

Las zonas de montaña, cubren la mayor parte de los territorios de Nicaragua y son de gran importancia socioeconómica para el país, ya que la mayoría de los cultivos se establecen en ellas. Los cultivos en laderas y con prácticas tradicionales han causado una degradación severa, lo cual ha agudizado la pobreza rural, y se ha convertido en la prioridad de las metas de las entidades que trabajan en la transferencia de tecnologías de manejo sostenible de suelos en Nicaragua. En esta investigación se plantea el objetivo de analizar la adopción de tecnologías como estrategia para promover la seguridad alimentaria y la conservación del ambiente en la comunidad de Imire en San José de Cusmapa, Madriz; Los Pochotillos, en San Francisco Libre, Managua y en la comunidad de Tomabú, en La Trinidad, Estelí, durante el período 2008-2011, y específicamente, en la determinación de los factores que influyen en la adopción de tecnologías de conservación de suelo, el efecto que han tenido en los rendimientos de los cultivos y en los ingresos económicos de los campesinos para la mejora de su alimentación. La metodología de investigación se fundamenta sobre dos bases complementarias de información: una base secundaria, compuesta por la información generada previamente por otros estudios, publicaciones oficiales, documentación científica y experiencias internacionales, y una base primaria basada en información empírica. Para el registro de los datos de campo se emplean varios instrumentos: entrevistas semi-estructuradas y talleres, involucrando a campesinos y agentes de extensión agraria; además de la socialización de los datos mediante su presentación en talleres productivos. Los resultados muestran que la adopción de técnicas de conservación de suelo es satisfactoria, hay una percepción favorable de las innovaciones que les han sido transferidas. Sin embargo, no logran incrementar los rendimientos de sus cultivos, lo cual no les permite lograr la seguridad alimentaria o mejorar sus condiciones de vida.

La ganadería bovina constituye un rubro muy importante en la sociedad nicaragüense, esta se basa principalmente en pastos y forrajes, lo que la vuelve frágil ante los cambios en distribución del hato ganadero, malas prácticas pecuarias y cambio climático. Como una alternativa para mejorar los sistemas de producción se ha investigado mucho en las gramíneas del género Brachiarias, sin embargo, si no hay adopción de las mismas, todo esfuerzo es en vano. Este estudio identificó que los factores socioeconómicos más importantes en los municipios de Matiguás, Rio Blanco, Muy Muy y Paiwas para la adopción del pasto Marandú son: Presencia de proyectos en la zona, topografía, resistencia del pasto a la sequía, asistencia técnica, nivel de escolaridad y que en productores donde confluyan estos factores la probabilidad de adopción es del 95%. Para llegar a estos resultados se hicieron encuestas a 130 productores de los municipios mencionados y se analizaron mediante un modelo logit, donde la variable independiente era adopción y las dependientes se agruparon en características del productor, del sistema, del pasto y factores externos

Background: Several non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) have been implemented across the world to control the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Social distancing (SD) interventions applied so far have included school closures, remote working and quarantine. These measures have been shown to have large impacts on pandemic influenza transmission. However, there has been comparatively little examination of such measures for COVID-19. Methods: We examined the existing literature, and collated data, on implementation of NPIs to examine their effects on the COVID-19 pandemic so far. Data on NPIs were collected from official government websites as well as from media sources. Results: Measures such as travel restrictions have been implemented in multiple countries and appears to have slowed the geographic spread of COVID-19 and reduced initial case numbers. We find that, due to the relatively sparse information on the differences with and without interventions, it is difficult to quantitatively assess the efficacy of many interventions. Similarly, whilst the comparison to other pandemic diseases such as influenza can be helpful, there are key differences that could affect the efficacy of similar NPIs. Conclusions: The timely implementation of control measures is key to their success and must strike a balance between early enough application to reduce the peak of the epidemic and ensuring that they can be feasibly maintained for an appropriate duration. Such measures can have large societal impacts and they need to be appropriately justified to the population. As the pandemic of COVID-19 progresses, quantifying the impact of interventions will be a vital consideration for the appropriate use of mitigation strategies.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has disrupted training programs across all specialties. Surgical specialties, such as ophthalmology, that need continued microsurgical training are affected the most. The pandemic has resulted in ophthalmology residents being taken off their regular duties in ophthalmology and inducted into COVID duties. The focus on COVID care has de-emphasized training in ophthalmology. We highlight the challenges that teachers face in continuing the training programs of theory, clinical skill, and surgical skill transfer. Embracing technology is the need of the hour. We discuss the multiple options available to enable continued training programs and emphasize the need for all training institutes to include technology as an additional component of their training curricula.
