Se analizan las complejas relaciones entre la producción agrícola, la salud humana, la alimentación y el ambiente. El propósito es criticar al modelo dominante de agricultura moderna que usa semillas mejoradas, agroquímicos y maquinaria de alta capacidad operativa que conlleva a una alta degradación de los recursos naturales, siendo necesario aceptar y aplicar la concepción agroecológica, como alternativa de una dieta sana y nutritiva, pero también socialmente justa. Sin embargo, las políticas neoliberales de ajuste estructural promovidas por los organismos financieros multilaterales como el Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI), el Banco Mundial (BM) y la liberalización del comercio agropecuario dentro de la Organización Mundial del Comercio (OMC) consolidaron el poder transnacional sobre el sistema alimentario nacional y debilitaron la intervención de los estados nacionales en la agricultura y reorientaron las políticas agrícolas, para privilegiar los intereses del mercado, en detrimento de las necesidades de la población nacional, fomentando los cultivos de agroexportación y sacrificando las políticas de apoyo a la producción de granos básicos que aseguran la autosuficiencia alimentaria.

La agricultura sostenible en Costa Rica debe reconocer la necesidad de intensificar la productividad como medio de soportar la acelerada demanda creada por el incremento poblacional, pero al mismo tiempo debe prever el mejor uso y conservación de los recursos naturales. Sin recursos naturales no hay agricultura y sin ésta no hay seguridad alimentaria. Es de esperar que Costa Rica pueda satisfacer la demanda creciente de alimentos y otros productos agrícolas; evitando el acelerado proceso de degradación que sufren nuestros suelos y bosques. El proceso de agricultura sostenible en Costa Rica y otros países de la región, presenta un incremento en la demanda de tierras y recursos naturales; lo cual suscita competencias y agudos conflictos sociales, económicos y ecológicos. Costa Rica debe plantearse una estrategia de desarrollo sostenible que contemple los efectos asociados del crecimiento demográfico, la seguridad alimentaria, la protección de la biodiversidad, la regeneración de los ecosistemas, el desarrollo de tecnologías amigables con el ambiente, la regulación sobre el acceso a los recursos naturales y la formación de capital humano.

The aim of the present study is to contribute to current debates in AgrarianGeography concerning the dynamics of Brazilian rural space as exemplified by the case of Rio de Janeiro State. Rio de Janeiro presently is experiencing rural transformation provoked by the increasing urbanization of the countryside so redefining the geographical concepts of “rural” and “urban” within historical and contemporary processes of capitalist development. Within this general process, organic agriculture has emerged within vegetable farming in the Região Serrana Fluminense. As most vegetable production in this region is undertaken using conventional modern methods, organic farming for the metropolitan market is marketed through new separate channels so as to guarantee product authenticity. In the beginning, farmers were of urban origin, but as organic production expanded in response to increasing urban demand, some local farmers shifted from conventional to organic methods.

The purpose of this study was to describe agriculture and natural resource (ANR) leader business owners’ initial concerns and feelings about the impacts of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Based on the theories of opinion leadership and bounded rationality, researchers analyzed survey findings to identify and describe ANR business owners’ 1) business and economic concerns associated with COVID-19, 2) communication concerns associated with COVID-19, and 3) any other concerns or impacts experienced due to COVID-19. Findings indicated that the majority of respondents were concerned about their bottom lines, employees missing work, and their abilities to provide employees a safe workplace. Additionally, respondents were concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on the U.S. economy. Regarding communication concerns, respondents were concerned about others sharing inaccurate COVID-19 information. When asked about additional concerns related to COVID-19, many respondents noted their concerns about economic impacts, personal and business finances, and canceled events causing them to become unable to interact with customers. Overall, the biggest concerns were related to economic impacts and misinformation. Recommendations for future research are to continue to assess this population as the pandemic continues, and again when the health crisis ends to understand the recovery process for ANR leader business owners.

A produção de alimentos é importante para garantir a segurança alimentar, e os diferentes modos de produção podem gerar diferentes impactos ambientais. A diversificação agrícola é considerada uma das formas de promover a sustentabilidade, tanto em termos ecológicos quanto socioeconômicos. Para compreender a dinâmica da agricultura em Minas Gerais este trabalho utiliza um indicador para caracterizar os sistemas de produção agrícola e avaliar a diversidade produtiva dos 853 municípios do estado. A maior parte dos municípios (62%) apresentou uma diversidade alta ou muito alta, sendo esta diversidade associada principalmente ao contexto da agricultura familiar. No entanto, a contribuição destes sistemas agrícolas diversificados para a economia dos municípios é relativamente baixa, mostrando que a sustentabilidade econômica de sistemas diversificados ainda é um desafio. É importante que, além do interesse do produtor, exista uma política pública de desenvolvimento rural capaz de viabilizar sistemas de produção agrícola alinhados com padrões de sustentabilidade ambiental.

This work aims to present the results of the project: “Building technological bridges between family farming and the local market in the municipality of Palmas-TO and region”. This is a descriptive research, in which semi-structured interviews were used for data collection, and requirements gathering, visual prototyping, coding, testing and implementation for software development. The technological tool called AgriToca was designed to serve not only the consumer market with the creation of virtual baskets, but also family farmers, through an online registration form containing all fiscal and marketing data on what is produced and offered for them. It is, therefore, about expanding the possibilities of negotiation with legal entities and direct commercialization between producers and consumers, mainly due to the new market dynamics induced by the Covid-19 pandemic.

El presente documento examina, desde el ángulo ambiental, varios argumentos a favor y en contra de la expansión de cultivos energéticos para obtener agrobiocombustibles (ABC), señalando dos características importantes: la complejidad y la incertidumbre del tema, expresados en los debates sobre si reducen o no las emisiones de CO 2 , NO X , SO X y otros gases de efecto invernadero, si son más o menos eficientes para reemplazar combustibles fósiles, si compiten o no con la producción de alimentos, si provocan o no mayores tasas de deforestación y si generan o no posibilidades de desarrollo local a través de la ampliación de la frontera agrícola y de los desarrollos tecnológicos asociados a esta nueva industria. Los ABC tendrán efectos, entre otros aspectos, en el rearreglo productivo del territorio nacional, la propiedad de la tierra y el acceso a alimentos básicos por parte de las poblaciones pobres. Parte de los efectos negativos o positivos se dará en el contexto de los sistemas de manejo, que son discutidos en este documento, en términos de modelos de revolución verde (intensificación de plaguicidas, insumos y plantas transgénicas) versus agricultura ecológica, abordando en este último aspectos ideológicos y productivos.

La agricultura suburbana constituye un enfoque tecnológico novedoso para la producción de alimentos, cuyo objetivo fundamental es contribuir al incremento y la sostenibilidad de la seguridad alimentaria, facilitando la adopción de alternativas Agroecológica en las estrategias de desarrollo agrario municipal mediante un proceso de articulación agroecológica entre todos los componentes del sistema alimentario. Partiendo de estas premisas y como base para la aplicación del manejo agroecológico de plagas teniendo en cuenta la diversidad biológica de las unidades productivas, se evaluó el nivel tecnológico de 24 fincas del municipio Camagüey, mediante un diagnóstico participativo de la biodiversidad, que nos permitió trazar líneas de trabajo para avanzar en esta dirección. En un inicio el grado de complejidad de las fincas clasifico como poco complejo, nivel tecnológico que logro elevarse en el transcurso de un año mediante un proceso de reconversión del agroecosistema, a medianamente complejo con la aplicación de prácticas agroecológicas que diversificaron el hábitat de las mismas. Estos resultados permitieron incrementar los rendimientos en diferentes cultivos al minimizar las afectaciones por plagas, aumentar la relación presa-depredador y proteger el ecosistema con la aceptación por los agricultores de las tecnologías propuestas. Se logró aumentar los beneficios económicos de las familias por el aumento de los rendimientos y una mayor oferta de productos, a la vez que diversificaron el ecosistema y obtuvieron producciones más limpias con una mejora del medioambiente y la salud humana.

Aunque la Real Academia Española (RAE), en su diccionario, no incluye la definición del término agrobiodiversidad, este es un asunto que concierne a todos. La agrobiodiversidad o biodiversidad agrícola (BA) es la diversidad de los sistemas agrícolas, incluyendo desde los genes hasta variedades, especies, y desde las prácticas agrícolas hasta la composición del paisaje1, todo lo relacionado con la interacción agrícola humana. La BA se enfrenta diariamente a factores que la han erosionado, tanto que, en la actualidad comúnmente se afirma que sólo 30 cultivos proporcionan el 95% de la energía total que se obtiene de los alimentos, y cuatro de ellos (maíz, trigo, arroz y patata) suministran más del 60% de las calorías. La dependencia alimentaria de unos pocos cultivos y pocas variedades de ellos, puede crear graves consecuencias alimentarias, porque se aumenta la vulnerabilidad de los sistemas productivos ante el cambio climático, con la aparición de nuevas plagas. Todos los días se habla de 'conservación': conservación de recursos, ambiente, especies, etc., ¿pero realmente se está conservando la diversidad agrícola que es de la que depende la alimentación? La gran mayoría de la producción de alimentos para consumo humano está a cargo de pequeños agricultores, quienes deben enfrentarse a problemas cada vez más complejos para su actividad: degradación de suelos, uso intensivo y creciente de agroquímicos, contaminación del agua y suelos, proliferación de plagas resistentes, falta de oportunidades y calidad de vida para pobladores de zonas rurales, entre otros, que hacen de la producción agrícola, una actividad difícil y poco atractiva para las nuevas generaciones.En las explotaciones campesinas familiares son donde más agrobiodiversidad se encuentra y se conserva. La descripción y análisis de diversos sistemas agrícolas tradicionales y sus prácticas han demostrado que éstos jueguen un papel importante en el mantenimiento de los procesos ecológicos esenciales del agroecosistema que manejan, por medio de la modificación de las características físicas y biológicas del ambiente, con prácticas que protegen el suelo de la erosión y que además, mejoran las condiciones, su fertilidad, cultivando variedades de especies, promoviendo su diversidad en todos los sentidos.El uso de la biotecnología como herramienta para mejorar las variedades cultivadas, ha incidido en la reducción de variedades seleccionadas para el cultivo, pues en términos de rendimiento, son mucho más productivas que las variedades silvestres. Por otro lado, las variedades silvestres son las que proveen genes para conferir características deseadas en las variedades mejoradas. Es poco probable la obtención de una variedad mejorada si no se tiene una variedad silvestre. El Convenio de Biodiversidad Biológica (CDB), firmado en 1992 en Río de Janeiro (Brasil), es el marco general que regula el uso de los recursos biológicos en el mundo, en el cual 150 estados se comprometieron con la conservación de sus recursos biológicos, entre ellos, la agrobiodiversidad genética.El futuro de la agricultura y la conservación de los ecosistemas naturales, depende de la conservación de la agrobiodiversidad, la promoción de su uso sostenible requiere atención de todos los sectores debido a que provee servicios ecosistémicos y bienestar económico, además del gran aporte que hace a la seguridad alimentaria y a la calidad de vida de las personas, por lo que a todos nos concierne el buen uso que se haga de ella, no basta con declararse 'protector de la biodiversidad', hay que realizar acciones concretas y efectivas en pro de su conservación e incluir esfuerzos técnicos y económicos para la conservación de la agrobiodiversidad.
