<text>Pig farming generates significant amounts of biodegradable organic waste that can be stabilised by means of anaerobic bio-digestion, with the nutrients and energy being recycled to add value to the activity. The aim of this study was to analyse the economic and financial viability of setting up a system for the agronomic and energy use of waste from pig farming, generated on a farm in Mamborê, in the State of Paraná. The volume of waste generated by the 4,855 pigs was estimated in order to calculate the value of the biofertiliser and biogas, and obtain the possible revenue. The analyses of economic viability were carried out for the full budget of setting up a biodigestor and motor-generator system and the cost surveys necessary for operation of the bio-integrated project. These costs were compared to revenues in a ten-year cash flow. In order to check the profitability of the project, the following deterministic methods of investment were applied: Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The initial investment was BRL 160,321.43, and the annual operating, maintenance and depreciation costs totalled BRL 77,401.55. Considering the nutrients N, P2O5 and K2O, and the electrical energy, it should be possible to obtain BRL 121,186.63 per year, allowing amortisation of the investment over four years. The NPV and the IRR had a result of BRL 669,959.70 and 25.31% respectively. The results therefore led to the project being followed, revealing socioeconomic and environmental benefits.

<text>The investigation was carried out in the experimental farm of the College of Agricultural Sciences of the Technical University of Babahoyo, canton Babahoyo. Ten treatments were evaluated with three repetitions. The objective was to analyze the influence of four organic bioestimulantes on the efficiency of the conventional chemical fertilization in rice (Oryza sativa), to measure the effect on the agronomic behavior of the cultivation. The variety of rice INIAP-17 was sowed in parcels of 20 m2. The treatments were distributed at random in a design of complete blocks. For the evaluation of stockings the test was used from Tukey to significancia 5%. At the end of the cycle of the cultivation was evaluated: height of plants, sprout number for m2, grains for panicles, length and number of panicles m2, days to flowering, days to crop, number of grains for panicles, weight 1000 grains and yield for hectare. The results determined that the application of a program of high fertilization level (140-60-90-30 kg/ha, of N-P-K-S) + Azospirillum 3 L/ha, the grain yield increased with increments of 23,44% with relationship to the witness. In the same way applications of Bacilllus and Azotobacter more levels means (120-40-60-20) and first floor (100-30-40-10) of application of N-P-K-S, they don't impact in days to the flowering, tipping, weight of 1000 grains, number of grains for panicles and relationship grain/straw.</text>

<text>The genetic improvement program of the Seed Technology Training and Development Center works on the agronomic characterization and the content of bioactive compounds in eight genotypes of habanero pepper. The objective is to select genotypes with good agronomic performance that allow the generation of inbred lines to obtain hybrids. In this study, the agronomic performance and the content of bioactive compounds (capsaicinoids, polyphenols, and antioxidant capacity) were evaluated in eight genotypes of habanero pepper grown in the southeast of Coahuila, Mexico, identified as HNC-1, HNC-2, HNC-3, HNC-4, HNC-5, HNC-6, HNC-7, and HCC-8. The plants were grown in a greenhouse for 127 days, under a completely randomized design with four replications each. The results revealed that the yield (g·plant−1) and number of fruits per plant did not show significant differences between genotypes. However, for the fruit length, the genotypes HCC-8, HNC-7, HNC-6, and HNC-5 stood out with over 40 mm, while in equatorial diameter of the fruit, HCC-8, HNC-4, and HNC-2 stood out with 26.45, 26.46, and 25.12 mm, respectively. The results of the chemical analyses allowed us to identify that HNC-5 and HNC-6 had the highest capsaicin concentration (931.38 and 959.77 mg·kg−1), dihydrocapsaicin (434.95 and 445.89 mg·kg−1), Scoville Heat Units greater than 210,000, total phenols (67.54 and 71.15 mg/100 g) and total flavonoids (34.21 and 38.29 mg/100 g), respectively. The HNC-1 and HNC-6 genotypes had the highest carotenoids concentration with 103.96 and 105.07 mg/100 g, and HCC-8 registered the highest anthocyanin content with 22.08 mg C3GE/100 g. The antioxidant capacities showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) between genotypes, with a range of 43.22 to 110.39 µmol TE/100 g, 72.37 to 186.56 µmol TE/100 g, and 191.41 to 244.98 µmol TE/100 g for the tests of DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2′azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power). The results of this research will be used to select habanero pepper genotypes that can be used in genetic improvement programs to increase the productive potential and the content of bioactive compounds in the fruits to expand their applications in the food industry.</text>

This paper presents the results of a research which main goal was to describe the context and practices related to the use of pesticides among farmers in the community of Serrinha do Mendanha, Campo Grande, County of Rio de Janeiro. The methodological proposal had a qualitative approach and data was collected through a semi-structured questionnaire. Thirty eight farmers participated in this research. Socio-economic profile shows elderly people working in agriculture, expressive percentile of illiteracy and low income. Despite the natural approach to the use of pesticides, which is a routine to these families, most informants believe that pesticides can affect their health, show some concern about the consumers and would like to know alternatives. These findings point to the possibility of change in agricultural practices. It is not a matter of simply offering information that in some way they already possess; it means developing strategies to reduce or even quit the use of pesticides in plantations.</text>
