Kales Description An account of the resource Abstract Epidemiological studies have yielded conflicting results regarding climate and incident SARS-CoV-2 infection, and seasonality of infection rates is debated. Moreover, few studies have focused on COVD-19 deaths. We studied the association of average ambient temperature with subsequent COVID-19 mortality in the OECD countries and the individual United States (US), while accounting for other important meteorological and non-meteorological co-variates. The exposure of interest was average temperature and other weather conditions, measured at 25 days prior and 25 days after the first reported COVID-19 death was collected in the OECD countries and US states. The outcome of interest was cumulative COVID-19 mortality, assessed for each region at 25, 30, 35, and 40 days after the first reported death. Analyses were performed with negative binomial regression and adjusted for other weather conditions, particulate matter, sociodemographic factors, smoking, obesity, ICU beds, and social distancing. A 1 °C increase in ambient temperature was associated with 6% lower COVID-19 mortality at 30 days following the first reported death (multivariate-adjusted mortality rate ratio: 0.94, 95% CI 0.90, 0.99, p = 0.016). The results were robust for COVID-19 mortality at 25, 35 and 40 days after the first death, as well as other sensitivity analyses. The results provide consistent evidence across various models of an inverse association between higher average temperatures and subsequent COVID-19 mortality rates after accounting for other meteorological variables and predictors of SARS-CoV-2 infection or death. This suggests potentially decreased viral transmission in warmer regions and during the summer season. El diseño propuesto es una modificación de las estructuras rústicas empleadas por los agricultores, y utiliza la ventilación cruzada y materiales reflectivos, mediante la elevación del piso donde se coloca el frijol y la eliminación de paredes laterales. Se evaluaron tres colores de coberturas plásticas: transparente, negro y gris, de 0,0038 cm de grosor, y se empleó como tratamiento testigo el diseño con plástico transparente usado por los agricultores (cuatro tratamientos). Se midió la temperatura y la humedad en el interior del material vegetal colocado dentro de las estructuras (0,20 y 1,25 m de profundidad) y en el ambiente exterior durante 16 días, con dos periodos de mediciones de ocho días consecutivos cada uno y tres repeticiones (tres fincas). Se evaluó además el contenido de humedad y el tiempo de cocción de los granos. Los materiales plásticos reflectivos y el diseño bioclimático mejoraron el microclima en el interior de las estructuras de almacenamiento y se redujo significativamente el tiempo de cocción de los frijoles, en comparación con los diseño tradicional con plástico trasparente empleado por los agricultores. Sin embargo, a estos profesionales, la estadística les suele resultar confusa; en parte, esto se debe a dificultades relacionadas con la terminología. Muchas de estas dificultades derivan de los múltiples significados que tiene un término, tanto dentro como fuera del ámbito estadístico. Para los profesionales de habla hispana, la traducción de términos desde el inglés también aporta a esta confusión. En este trabajo exponemos (e intentamos clarificar) algunos de estos problemas a partir de dos de los términos que conforman la base de un curso de estadística introductorio: error y sesgo. Estos términos son discutidos en los diferentes contextos que se atraviesan en la resolución de problemas utilizando la estadística: muestreo, medición, inferencia y predicción. El error es inherente a la estadística y, según el contexto, se lo usa para cuantificar distintos tipos de variabilidad o para indicar la posibilidad de equivocarse al tomar una decisión. El sesgo, en cambio, refleja la tendencia hacia ciertos valores o elementos y, de no evitarse, conlleva a conclusiones erróneas. Proponemos que los problemas asociados con la ambigüedad léxica se aborden desde la enseñanza universitaria, y sobre esa base brindamos algunas recomendaciones.
