Various different viruses, such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, rhinovirus and coronavirus constitute infection with flulike symptoms. In our study, the patients who applied to our hospital with flu-like symptoms and clinical findings between October 2001 to April 2002 and October 2003 to April 2004 were evaluated. Viral antigens and antibodies in the nasopharyngeal aspirates and serum samples were investigated by immunofluorescent technique. In our study we determined etiological agents in 48.6% of 37 patients evaluated in the period I, and in 44% of 25 patients in the period II. In the first period, influenza B was determined as 61.1%, influenza A as 22.2% and RSV as 16.7%, while in the second period influenza A was determined as 45.5%, RSV as 27.3%, influenza B as 18.2% and parainfluenza type 1 as 9.1%. The most frequently encountered symptoms in patients were fatigue, fever, sweating, headache and muscle pain, coughing, running eyes, and sound and taste changes. Duration of symptoms was 6.8 ± 3.1 days in the group in which the etiological agent was identified and 4.6 ± 2.4 days in the group in which the etiological agent could not be determined. Our findings show that the dominant influenza virus type varies from year to year. Immunofluorescence, a rapid, reliable and simple test, is important in the identification of viral agents. However, agent identification becomes difficult in situations in which disease symptoms and viremia are not obvious and are short-lived. Agent identification and good clinical observation prevent inappropriate antibiotherapy aimed at bacterial infections in patients presenting with flu-like symptoms. The outbreak of a contagious disease not only affects the health and lives of people but also causes economic growth to stagnate. Business in the biotechnology industry is closely related to infectious diseases but what exactly is the information value of the outbreak of infectious disease on biotechnology? This study investigates how such outbreaks can affect the performance of biotechnology stocks. In the past 10 years, major statutory infectious diseases in Taiwan have included ENTEROVIRUS 71, DENGUE FEVER, SARS and H1N1. The empirical results indicate that there is a significant abnormal return on company shares in Taiwan's biotechnology industry because of statutory infectious epidemics. The relationship between the financial ratios of biotechnology companies and abnormal returns was analyzed as part of this research. The results show that the influence on R&D ratios, current ratios and assets are significant. Empirical findings reveal that the investors rationally measure operating conditions of the biotechnology companies during outbreaks of major infectious disease and adjust portfolio allocation accordingly. A major problem in its cure is its early screening and detection, which will decide on its treatment. Due to the fast contactless spreading of the virus, its screening is unusually difficult. Moreover, the results of COVID-19 tests may take up to 48 h. That is enough time for the virus to worsen the health of the affected person. The health community needs effective means for identification of the virus in the shortest possible time. In this study, we invent a medical device utilized consisting of composable sensors to monitor remotely and in real-time the health status of those who have symptoms of the coronavirus or those infected with it. The device comprises wearable medical sensors integrated using the Arduino hardware interfacing and a smartphone application. An IoT framework is deployed at the backend through which various devices can communicate in real-time. The medical device is applied to determine the patient’s critical status of the effects of the coronavirus or its symptoms using heartbeat, cough, temperature and Oxygen concentration (SpO2) that are evaluated using our custom algorithm. Until now, it has been found that many coronavirus patients remain asymptomatic, but in case of known symptoms, a person can be quickly identified with our device. It also allows doctors to examine their patients without the need for physical direct contact with them to reduce the possibility of infection. Our solution uses rule-based decision-making based on the physiological data of a person obtained through sensors. These rules allow to classify a person as healthy or having a possibility of infection by the coronavirus. The advantage of using rules for patient’s classification is that the rules can be updated as new findings emerge from time to time. In this article, we explain the details of the sensors, the smartphone application, and the associated IoT framework for real-time, remote screening of COVID-19. We aim to analyze the effect of COVID-19 pandemic and social restriction rules on these fragile patients.Methods: Patients with chronic neurologic diseases routinely followed at the outpatient clinic of Gemelli University Hospital, Rome, were assessed for symptoms suggestive of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the pandemic period, consequences of social restrictions, and neurological disease features, concomitant medical conditions, current medical and disease-specific treatments. Data source: a dedicated telephone survey designed to encompass questions on COVID-19 symptoms and on pandemic effects in chronic neurologic conditions.Results: Overall, 2,167 individuals were analyzed: 63 patients reported contact with COVID-19 positive cases, 41 performed the swab, and 2 symptomatic patients tested positive for COVID-19 (0.09%). One hundred fifty-eight individuals (7%) needed urgent neurological care, deferred due to the pandemic; 641 patients (30%) suspended hospital treatments, physiotherapy or other support interventions; 405 individuals (19%) reported a subjective worsening of neurological symptoms.Conclusions: In our population, the presence of neurological chronic diseases did not increase the prevalence of COVID-19 infection. Nevertheless, the burden of neurological disorders has been worsened by the lockdown.
