Las organizaciones internacionales como la ONU reconocen la importancia de efectuar acciones contra el cambio climático. Por esta razón, Costa Rica se plantea alcanzar la meta de carbono-neutralidad en los próximos años. A raíz de lo anterior, se ha visto incrementado el uso de materiales biodegradables en diferentes aplicaciones. Al respecto, este artículo presenta una alternativa sostenible a los aditivos de mezclas asfálticas al plantear el uso de bambú para tal fin. Por tanto, uno de los objetivos de esta investigación es potenciar el uso de este cultivo, que genera múltiples beneficios al ambiente como: fijación de carbono, evita erosión en los suelos, genera fuentes de empleo para su cultivo entre otras. Cabe mencionar que las fibras del culmo se utilizan en esta investigación como producto final y no como residuo por lo que, una vez cultivada, la planta vuelve a crecer generando así un ciclo sostenible. Esta investigación presenta el análisis y desempeño mecánico de una mezcla asfáltica modificada con fibra de bambú de la especie guadua angustifolia. El objetivo principal fue evaluar su comportamiento mecánico con la metodología SUPERPAVE. Como resultado se obtuvo una mejoría en la resistencia de la mezcla a la fatiga y al daño por humedad, lo cual es prometedor y abre una posibilidad al uso de fibras en estos materiales.

A wide genetic diversity has been reported for wild olives, which could be particularly interesting for the introgression of some agronomic traits and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses in breeding programs. However, the introgression of some beneficial wild traits may be paralleled by negative effects on some other important agronomic and quality traits. From the quality point of view, virgin olive oil (VOO) from olive cultivars is highly appreciated for its fatty acid composition (high monounsaturated oleic acid content) and the presence of several minor components. However, the composition of VOO from wild origin and its comparison with VOO from olive cultivars has been scarcely studied. In this work, the variability for fruit characters (fruit weight and oil content, OC), fatty acid composition, and minor quality components (squalene, sterols and tocopherols content and composition) was studied in a set of plant materials involving three different origins: wild genotypes (n = 32), cultivars (n = 62) and genotypes belonging to cultivar × wild progenies (n = 62). As expected, values for fruit size and OC in wild olives were lower than those obtained in cultivated materials, with intermediate values for cultivar × wild progenies. Wild olives showed a remarkably higher C16:0 percentage and tocopherol content in comparison to the cultivars. Contrarily, lower C18:1 percentage, squalene and sterol content were found in the wild genotypes, while no clear differences were found among the different plant materials regarding composition of the tocopherol and phytosterol fractions. Some common highly significant correlations among components of the same chemical family were found in all groups of plant materials. However, some other correlations were specific for one of the groups. The results of the study suggested that the use of wild germplasm in olive breeding programs will not have a negative impact on fatty acid composition, tocopherol content, and tocopherol and phytosterol profiles provided that selection for these compounds is conducted from early generations. Important traits such as tocopherol content could be even improved by using wild parents.

Abstract Background The world is threatened by future pandemics. Vaccines can play a key role in preventing harm, but there will inevitably be shortages because there is no possibility of advance stockpiling. We therefore need some method of prioritising access. Main text This paper reports a critical interpretative review of the published literature that discusses ethical arguments used to justify how we could prioritise vaccine during an influenza pandemic. We found that the focus of the literature was often on proposing different groups as priorities (e.g. those with pre-existing health conditions, the young, the old, health care workers etc.). Different reasons were often suggested as a means of justifying such priority groupings (e.g. appeal to best overall outcomes, fairness, belonging to a vulnerable or ‘at risk’ group etc.). We suggest that much of the literature, wrongly, assumes that we are able to plan priority groups prior to the time of a particular pandemic and development of a particular vaccine. We also point out the surprising absence of various issues from the literature (e.g. how vaccines fit within overall pandemic planning, a lack of specificity about place, issues of global justice etc.). Conclusions The literature proposes a wide range of ways to prioritise vaccines, focusing on different groups and ‘principles’. Any plan to use pandemic vaccine must provide justifications for its prioritisation. The focus of this review was influenza pandemic vaccines, but lessons can be learnt for future allocations of coronavirus vaccine, if one becomes available.

The dominant viral etiologies responsible for acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are poorly understood, particularly among hospitalized children in resource-limited tropical countries where morbidity and mortality caused by ARIs are highest. Improved etiological insight is needed to improve clinical management and prevention.We conducted a three-year prospective descriptive study of severe respiratory illness among children from 2 months to 13 years of age within the largest referral hospital for infectious diseases in southern Vietnam.Molecular detection for 15 viral species and subtypes was performed on three types of respiratory specimens (nose, throat swabs and nasopharyngeal aspirates) using a multiplex RT-PCR kit (Seeplex™ RV detection, Seegene) and additional monoplex real-time RT-PCRs.A total of 309 children were enrolled from November 2004 to January 2008. Viruses were identified in 72% (222/309) of cases, including respiratory syncytial virus (24%), influenza virus A and B (17%), human bocavirus (16%), enterovirus (9%), human coronavirus (8%), human metapneumovirus (7%), parainfluenza virus 1-3 (6%), adenovirus (5%), and human rhinovirus A (4%). Co-infections with multiple viruses were detected in 20% (62/309) of patients. When combined, diagnostic yields in nose and throat swabs were similar to nasopharyngeal aspirates.Similar to other parts in the world, RSV and influenza were the predominant viral pathogens detected in Vietnamese hospitalized children. Combined nasal and throat swabs are the specimens of choice for sensitive molecular detection of a broad panel of viral agents. Further research is required to better understand the clinical significance of single versus multiple viral coinfections and to address the role of bacterial (co-)infections involved in severe respiratory illness.

El presente trabajo compara tres mezclas formuladas de fertilizantes —una mezcla tradicional; un fertilizante mineral 10-15-20; y un fertilizante orgánico-mineral 8-12-16 en dosis crecientes, con y sin aplicación de materia orgánica (humus de lombriz)— en el cultivo de tabaco. El experimento se condujo en un suelo arenoso de irrigación utilizando 2 plántulas de tabaco negro por maceta. La fertilización al suelo para cada dosis de NPK en mg.kg-1/maceta fue: dosis baja (160-60-80), dosis media (320-120-160) y dosis alta (480-180-240). Se utilizó el diseño completo al azar con arreglo factorial, con tres repeticiones y conducido en macetas con 4 kg de suelo. La evaluación consistió en medir el rendimiento en peso fresco de la parte aérea y el peso seco total (parte aérea y radicular) de las plantas. Fue posible observar que no existe superioridad en cuanto a la materia fresca y seca total producidas entre las mezclas formuladas utilizadas, con un promedio de 432,5g/maceta y 112,6g/ maceta, respectivamente. Se pudo tener así tres alternativas en la fertilización de tabaco. Sin embargo, con el uso del fertilizante orgánico-mineral se obtendría mayores beneficios en el suelo por el efecto residual que dejaría por contener en su composición un 25% de materia orgánica por cada 100 kg de fertilizante. Conforme aumentan las dosis de fertilización se incrementan también los rendimientos, notándose el efecto directo de los fertilizantes en el sustrato arenoso utilizado, sin salinidad que pueda haber afectado la asimilación de nutrientes. Además, se observó la baja fertilidad del sustrato al comparar el tratamiento adicional 0-0-0 con los demás tratamientos, lo que ha producido mas del 300% en cuanto a rendimiento. No existe efecto significativo en la interacción fertilizante vs. materia orgánica en la producción de materia fresca aérea y seca total, debido a que la dosis de materia orgánica fue baja (1%).

Los cambios climáticos producidos últimamente en el mundo debido al calentamiento global son motivo de preocupación creciente por su impacto en la salud y particularmente por su influencia en la presentación de las llamadas infecciones emergentes. Un aspecto poco estudiado de estas infecciones es el cambio en la virulencia y presentación clínica de infecciones producidas por agentes conocidos. La epidemia que ocasionó un elevado número de muertes infantiles en la provincia de Talara, durante el fenómeno El Niño de 1997 y 1998, fue producida por una enfermedad de presentación inusual, de rápida evolución y elevada mortalidad. La secuencia de síntomas, el examen físico y los resultados de laboratorio correspondieron a un patrón de infección viral. El compromiso neurológico nos planteó el diagnóstico de encefalitis, siendo el edema cerebral la causa de muerte de estos niños. El cuadro clínico pudo corresponder al de virus conocidos, como los arbovirus o al de los virus influenza, parainfluenza, adenovirus, echovirus, coxsackie, enterovirus, herpesvirus, entre otros, pero con mayor impacto a nivel del sistema nervioso central, o de un nuevo virus con características neurotrópicas. Analizamos la relación entre infecciones y elevación de temperatura. Destacamos la importancia de la historia clínica y el conocimiento de la fisiopatología de las infecciones virales para hacer su diagnóstico y la necesidad de estar preparados ante la presentación de una nueva epidemia en infraestructura, insumos y especialmente capacitación del personal de salud. En este sentido, se señala las limitaciones de los programas de salud vigentes. El mejoramiento de las condiciones de vida, saneamiento ambiental y cuidado del medio ambiente son la mejor manera de prevenir y controlar la presentación de infecciosas emergentes. Debemos aprender de las lecciones que nos dejó esta epidemia y del elevado número de muertes infantiles que ocasionó, para que no vuelvan a ocurrir.

En este ensayo proponemos concebir la selva y la red como tecno-ecologías de la presencia, a saber: dispositivos y contextos de relación orientados a hacer presente al Otro. Nos centramos en formas de generar co-presencialidad que, física o virtualmente, preceden al campo comunicativo, es decir, establecen las formas de relación entre los presentes como génesis (no resultado) del medio de comunicación. Comparando algunos de los usos comunicativos que los colectivos Afroindígenas hacen de la selva y la red, nos distanciamos de la idea de «medio de comunicación» como mero mediador tecnológico entre personas. Como alternativa, adoptamos una perspectiva relacional y ontogenética de los medios, atendiendo a cómo relaciones socio-ecológicas crean campos de co-presencialidad y comunicación. Desplazando la atención puesta en la naturaleza técnica de los medios hacia su génesis práctica y transformabilidad social, nuestros casos etnográficos muestran como los medios, en tanto que tecno-ecologías de la presencia, son configurados, reinventados, y permanentemente abiertos a la incorporación de la diferencia.

El presente trabajo reflexiona sobre las implicancias en la vida social de los sistemas algorítmicos que componen las diferentes plataformas digitales de acceso y participación en la web. El concepto de burbujas de filtro brindado por Pariser (2011) es el punto de partida. El mismo es sometido a una lectura crítica con la intención de explicitar sus aristas más potentes, es decir, aquellas que abren camino a un amplio terreno de investigación sobre nuestra actual ecología mediática y en el que poco han incursionado los discursos académicos hispanoamericanos. Desde una mirada crítica se pone en crisis la metáfora de la burbuja y su capacidad heurística para aprehender, en su complejidad, el impacto de los criterios maquínicos de selección en nuestras formas tecnológicas de vida (Lash, 2005). En su lugar, se propone el concepto de fenomenología algorítmica, concluyendo en la necesidad de una relación dialógica y/o metacomunicativa entre los usuarios y los sistemas algorítmicos en relación con los cuales los primeros experiencian el mundo. Finalmente, se exponen los resultados de un experimento empírico acotado en el que se indaga: por un lado, la veracidad de la hipótesis que presenta a Google como plataforma que aísla informativamente a sus usuarios y a DuckDuckGo como un buscador genérico; y, por otra parte, el grado de conocimiento y la disposición a intervenir las opciones de configuración ofrecidas por los buscadores.

Although many clinical reports have been published, little is known about the pathological post-mortem findings from people who have died of the novel coronavirus disease. The need for postmortem information is urgent to improve patient management of mild and severe illness, and treatment strategies. The present systematic review was carried out according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review (PRISMA) standards. A systematic literature search and a critical review of the collected studies were conducted. An electronic search of PubMed, Science Direct Scopus, Google Scholar, and Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE) from database inception to June 2020 was performed. We found 28 scientific papers; the total amount of cases is 341. The major histological feature in the lung is diffuse alveolar damage with hyaline membrane formation, alongside microthrombi in small pulmonary vessels. It appears that there is a high incidence of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism among COVID-19 decedents, suggesting endothelial involvement, but more studies are needed. A uniform COVID-19 post-mortem diagnostic protocol has not yet been developed. In a time in which international collaboration is essential, standardized diagnostic criteria are fundamental requirements.
