Therefore, we have analysed the sequence data of ACE2 among 393 samples worldwide, focusing on South Asia. Genetically, South Asians are more related to West Eurasian populations rather than to East Eurasians. In the present analyses of ACE2, we observed that the majority of South Asian haplotypes are closer to East Eurasians rather than to West Eurasians. The phylogenetic analysis suggested that the South Asian haplotypes shared with East Eurasians involved two unique event polymorphisms (rs4646120 and rs2285666). Of 1,460 unexplained respiratory illnesses reported by state and local health departments to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from March 17 to July 30, 2003, a total of 398 (27%) met clinical and epidemiologic SARS case criteria. Of these, 72 (18%) were probable cases with radiographic evidence of pneumonia. Eight (2%) were laboratory-confirmed SARS-coronavirus (SARS-CoV) infections, 206 (52%) were SARS-CoV negative, and 184 (46%) had undetermined SARS-CoV status because of missing convalescent-phase serum specimens. Thirty-one percent (124/398) of case-patients were hospitalized; none died. Travel was the most common epidemiologic link (329/398, 83%), and mainland China was the affected area most commonly visited. One case of possible household transmission was reported, and no laboratory-confirmed infections occurred among healthcare workers. Successes and limitations of this emergency surveillance can guide preparations for future outbreaks of SARS or respiratory diseases of unknown etiology. En efecto, si bien en la consolidación de la economía-mundo europea se propugnaba la necesidad de la reorganización de la naturaleza con fines productivos, simultáneamente se alzaron voces que llamaban la atención sobre el carácter limitado de los recursos naturales. Desde una óptica visiblemente capitalista, por tanto, la deforestación en los países industrializados o en pleno proceso de industrialización, implicaría el incremento del valor de los recursos maderables de aquellas zonas aún dotadas de una notable abundancia de recursos, tal y como era percibida Costa Rica, y, en términos generales, América Latina en el siglo XIX, sólo para mencionar un ejemplo simplificado. Los recursos, asimismo, podían tener un valor presente o futuro de acuerdo a la accesibilidad de los mismos así como con sus posibilidades de transformación en bienes finales o intermedios. Por otra parte, las consecuencias humanas y sociales derivadas del desmonte acelerado y la disminución cuantitativa y cualitativa de recursos naturales necesarios para la vida humana, no eran del todo desconocidas. La disminución en el caudal de los ríos a consecuencia de la deforestación, el impacto de los procesos erosivos en la agricultura y el efecto de las quemas en la pérdida de nutrientes de los suelos eran en gran medida conocidos en el siglo XIX y aún mucho antes. Por otra parte, las consecuencias humanas y sociales derivadas del desmonte acelerado y la disminución cuantitativa y cualitativa de recursos naturales necesarios para la vida humana, no eran del todo desconocidas. La disminución en el caudal de los ríos a consecuencia de la deforestación, el impacto de los procesos erosivos en la agricultura y el efecto de las quemas en la pérdida de nutrientes de los suelos eran en gran medida conocidos en el siglo XIX y aún mucho antes. Es en este contexto de expansión neocolonial de los países capitalistas avanzados por un lado, y la aceleración drástica de los procesos de reordenamiento del medio biofísico patente en los países suministradores de materias primas por otro, que como en el caso de América Latina habían tomado muy en serio la ideología de la ventaja comparativa ricardiana en la que se consideraba “óptimo el intercambio de importaciones manufacturadas por exportaciones de productos primarios”, por lo que el apoyo estatal favoreció directamente al sector exportador1, en el que se inserta el presente artículo. Este tiene como objetivos centrales el dialogar y discutir con los principales trabajos que analizan el discurso ambiental en Costa Rica y sus orígenes, reflexionar sobre la historicidad del concepto “conservación”, así como el rol de los conflictos ecológicos distributivos en la generación de políticas públicas orientadas a la conservación de la naturaleza. Lo anterior con el fin de dimensionar contextualmente las formas de representación de las denuncias y observaciones sobre la conservación de la naturaleza presentes en los exploradores que en número considerable visitaron Costa Rica a lo largo del siglo XIX, ya fueran estas motivadas por la preocupación ante la pérdida de recursos comercialmente explotables, y/o como parte del reconocimiento de problemáticas ambientales específicas cuyas consecuencias humanas y sociales no eran del todo desconocidas, a pesar de considerarse circunscritas a un ámbito localizado y reducido. Procuraremos, asimismo, el establecer algunos elementos relacionales entre el surgimiento de las corrientes ambientalistas a nivel mundial, el contexto ambiental “originario” de los exploradores, el “estilo” científico de éstos derivado de sus influencias epistemológicas y el estado y características de la naturaleza en las zonas de exploración, con los conceptos conservacionistas esgrimidos explícita o implícitamente por los sujetos histórico-sociales que aquí se analizan, así como otros factores que pudieron haber incidido en lo que se puede considerar como las formas de representación de las problemáticas ambientales.
