A manutenção e/ou a ampliação da terra compõem o eixo central em torno do qual os produtores familiares organizam sua vida e seu trabalho. Este artigo analisa as estratégias desses produtores em relação à divisão de herança e à sucessão, e as formas que utilizam para aquisição de novas áreas. O levantamento das características das famílias e da propriedade foi realizado por meio de um questionário aplicado junto a 89 produtores familiares de três municípios da mesorregião de São José do Rio Preto (SP). Posteriormente foi entrevistado um terço dos produtores de cada município que havia respondido ao questionário. A análise das estratégias fundiárias mostrou uma grande diversidade na forma de partilhar a herança e de conduzir a sucessão, sendo que ambos os processos são apoiados, basicamente, em regras tradicionais, embora mantenham uma fachada de adequação às normas legais. Quanto às estratégias de aquisição de mais terras, observou-se que os produtores são capazes de organizar complexas formas de capitalização, centradas em maiores esforços no trabalho e na contenção de gastos, além da utilização de políticas públicas favoráveis e de práticas costumeiras. Os arranjos intra-familiares e as formas de cooperação ligadas ao parentesco mais amplo também se mostraram importantes para a ampliação da propriedade.The maintenance and/or expansion of land form the central axle along which family farming organize their livelihood and work.. This paper analyzes these producers' strategies that are related to division of inheritance and succession, and the forms of acquisition of new areas. The survey on the characteristics of families and property was carried out by a questionnaire in 89 familiar producers of three cities of São José do Rio Preto (SP) region. Next, one third of those answering the questionnaire were interviewed in the same cities. The analysis of agrarian strategies showed a great diversity in the manner of inheritance sharing and conducting succession; although being basically supported in both processes by traditional rules they seem to follow the legal the legal rules. Regarding to acquisition strategies of more land, it was noticed that producers are able to organize complex forms of capitalization, which are centralized in bigger efforts at work and containment of expenses, besides the use of favorable public policies and customary practices. The intra-familiar arrangements and the forms of kinship cooperation also appeared as equally important to the property expansion.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus for all humanity is a typical example of the birth of the black swan, a metaphor that indicates the event of very low probability, therefore unpredictable and a source of crisis. Statistics and probability theory teach that any deterministic hypothesis of forecasting this type of event is a chimera. More concretely, it is necessary to pay attention to the resilience of the system, so the goal must be the robustness (and perhaps even anti-fragility) of the socio-ecosystem with respect to any crisis advent, not the pursuit of the specific black swan, which, by the way, takes different forms: from financial perfect storms to pandemics, to the unpredictable effects of climate change etc. During the nineteenth century Europe was involved in various pandemics, which, among other things, stimulated the birth of regulatory plans and “hygienist” urban planning approach. Similarly, the present bursting of COVID-19 leads to ever greater efforts in the direction of environmental quality, which is also the protection of health. The paper refers to the health risk due to the urban characteristics, investigating the process of Urban Heat Island (UHI) which is a cause of health risk and of the increase in air pollution, while, at the moment, there is debate about the link between air pollution and COVID-19 diffusion, also if the first scientific papers on this topic seem to confirm the correlation. In any case, the precautionary principle pushes to take the opportunity of the crisis for a more sustainable city in terms of air breathing and wellness. This paper shows that it is possible to distinguish areas of the city with different UHI-air pollution hazard, according to their shape and land use. These results allow to support the choices of the planners to pursue mitigation of climatic extremes and air pollution, contributing to health of citizens and saving money from the health system.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which primarily targets the human respiratory system and may lead to severe pneumonia and ultimately death. Mortality rate is particurlarly high among people beyond the sixth decade of life with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The discovery that the SARS-CoV-2 uses the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) component ACE2 as a receptor to invade host epithelial cells and cause organs damage resulted in a debate regarding the role of ACE inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) therapies during COVID-19 pandemic. Some authors proposed the discontinuation of ACEIs and ARBs for cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic diseases, while expert opinions have discouraged that due to limited empirical evidence of their negative effect on COVID-19 outcomes, and that withdrawing treatment may contribute to clinical decompensation in high-risk patients. Moreover, as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases are associated with neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, especially among older adults, a critical appraisal of the potential positive effects of ACEIs and ARBs is highly needed. Herein, we aim to discuss the conundrum of ACEIs and ARBs use in high-risk patients for COVID-19, and their potential protective role on the development and/or progression of geriatric neuropsychiatric disorders.

The aim of this article was to review the role of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in acute pulmonary infectious diseases, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), H1N1 and tuberculosis, and to assess the risk of disease transmission with the use of NIV from patients to healthcare workers.We performed a clinical review by searching Medline and EMBASE. These databases were searched for articles on ‘‘clinical trials’’ and ‘‘randomised controlled trials’’. The keywords selected were non-invasive ventilation pulmonary infections, influenza-A (H1N1), SARS and tuberculosis. These terms were cross-referenced with the following keywords: health care workers, airborne infections, complications, intensive care unit and pandemic. The members of the International NIV Network examined the major results regarding NIV applications and SARS, H1N1 and tuberculosis. Cross-referencing mechanical ventilation with SARS yielded 76 studies, of which 10 studies involved the use of NIV and five were ultimately selected for inclusion in this review. Cross-referencing with H1N1 yielded 275 studies, of which 27 involved NIV. Of these, 22 were selected for review. Cross-referencing with tuberculosis yielded 285 studies, of which 15 involved NIV and from these seven were selected. In total 34 studies were selected for this review.NIV, when applied early in selected patients with SARS, H1N1 and acute pulmonary tuberculosis infections, can reverse respiratory failure. There are only a few reports of infectious disease transmission among healthcare workers.

La colonización de las Islas Canarias finalizó en el primer cuarto del siglo XVI y su fuerza motriz fue la agroindustria azucarera. Los documentos de cesión de la propiedad de las tierras y las aguas (datas) al colonato repoblador para el cultivo cañero revelan que esta distribución se efectúo de acuerdo con la cultura jurídica vigente en los principales regadíos de la España peninsular. La producción azucarera, estimulada por la demanda exterior, creció a buen ritmo y formó una «sacarocracia » que pronto controló las instituciones hidráulicas y del poder local. Y como sin agua no había agroindustria, la «sacarocracia» se dedicó con ahínco a eliminar todo obstáculo que impidiera el ejercicio de la iniciativa privada en la capitalización del recurso hídrico. Asistimos entonces a la génesis de una cultura jurídica diferenciada de su patrón originario y propia de un sistema hidráulico caracterizado por la propiedad y gestión privada del agua.

Pero constituye una alternativa vital para 200 millones de personas, que son incapaces de satisfacer las necesidades humanas (propias y familiares) en sus países de origen. Aquí se analizan las razones económicas de este fenómeno: desde el estancamiento económico y el deterioro del mercado de trabajo, con la secuela del desempleo persistente; pasando por la transformación de las estructuras económicas mundiales, la pobreza, los salarios de miseria y la explotación, la desregulación laboral, las estrategias monopolistas que sacrifican el desarrollo humano por el beneficio, la corrupción, e incluso la aceleración del cambio climático por motivo económico. O trabalho discute as razões pelas quais se considera ainda necessário no Brasil a implementação de políticas agrícolas e agrárias voltadas para pequenos produtores familiares. São criticadas as visões predominantes, comuns tanto à esquerda quanto à direita, baseadas em falsas analogias com o caso dos países desenvolvidos, as quais consideram que não há mais espaço no país para políticas do tipo proposto. A importância da produção familiar é enfatizada também através de uma breve apresentação dos dados do censo agrícola do IBGE. Finalmente, na seção conclusiva do trabalho são apresentadas algumas propostas de desenvolvimento rural sustentável baseado na produção familiar.

Este artigo compara os principais resultados do censo agropecuário do IBGE de 1996 com os resultados do censo de 2006, seguindo a metodologia conhecida como 'FAO-Incra' que permite caracterizar a agricultura familiar delimitando-a no universo total dos estabelecimentos. Na comparação destacam-se algumas variáveis significativas, tais como participação no valor da produção total (VBP), participação na área total dos estabelecimentos, utilização de tecnologia moderna e produtividade parcial de fatores.Os censos mostram que a participação na produção agropecuária se manteve praticamente inalterada, passando de 37,91% em 1996 para 36,11% em 2006, numa década de forte expansão do setor, o que revela que este segmente faz parte das cadeias produtivas agropecuárias do agronegócio brasileiro. A agricultura familiar é um segmento heterogêneo, com diversos subsegmentos. Nos dez anos de pesquisa percebe-se que houve forte crescimento da participação na produção do segmento mais abastado da agricultura familiar (A) e um crescimento numérico dos grupos mais pobres da mesma (C e D), sem o correspondente acréscimo de produção.
