                <text>The Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is a coronavirus (CoV)-mediated respiratory disease. Virus transmission occurs within health care settings, but cases also appear sporadically in the community. Camels are believed to be the source for community-acquired cases, but most patients do not have camel exposure. Here, we assessed whether camel workers (CWs) with high rates of exposure to camel nasal and oral secretions had evidence of MERS-CoV infection. The results indicate that a high percentage of CWs were positive for virus-specific immune responses but had no history of significant respiratory disease. Thus, a possible explanation for repeated MERS outbreaks is that CWs develop mild or subclinical disease. These CWs then transmit the virus to uninfected individuals, some of whom are highly susceptible, develop severe disease, and are detected as primary MERS cases in the community.Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), a highly lethal respiratory disease caused by a novel coronavirus (MERS-CoV), is an emerging disease with high potential for epidemic spread. It has been listed by the WHO and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) as an important target for vaccine development. While initially the majority of MERS cases were hospital acquired, continued emergence of MERS is attributed to community acquisition, with camels likely being the direct or indirect source. However, the majority of patients do not describe camel exposure, making the route of transmission unclear. Here, using sensitive immunological assays and a cohort of camel workers (CWs) with well-documented camel exposure, we show that approximately 50% of camel workers (CWs) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and 0% of controls were previously infected. We obtained blood samples from 30 camel herders, truck drivers, and handlers with well-documented camel exposure and from healthy donors, and measured MERS-CoV-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence assay (IFA), and neutralizing antibody titers, as well as T cell responses. Totals of 16/30 CWs and 0/30 healthy control donors were seropositive by MERS-CoV-specific ELISA and/or neutralizing antibody titer, and an additional four CWs were seronegative but contained virus-specific T cells in their blood. Although virus transmission from CWs has not been formally demonstrated, a possible explanation for repeated MERS outbreaks is that CWs develop mild disease and then transmit the virus to uninfected individuals. Infection of some of these individuals, such as those with comorbidities, results in severe disease and in the episodic appearance of patients with MERS.</text>

                <text>The aim of this paper is to evaluate the air and thermal pollution in the southern suburbs of Riyadh, where people are suffering from poor air quality due to the rapid development of the industrial facilities in the area. The study involved the distribution of questionnaires to 405 residents living in that area in order to obtain their opinions about air pollution. In addition, land surface temperature and 12 components of air were measured at 18 points. In addition, the air quality data from 2016 to 2020 for Al Khaldya and Southern Ring Road air stations were assessed. Al Misfat (Oil Refinery) and the Second Industry City are significant contributors to air pollution and also result in the urban heat island effect from high temperature due to factories and industrial activities. However, all the measured components of air quality are lower than the standard limits except the element particulate matter (PM)10, which exceeds the standard limits in several parts of the study area and during several months of the year. This can surely have a negative impact on the health of residents. At the same time, this study found that the preventive measures taken to stop the spread of COVID-19 infections have led to a positive impact in the area in terms of improvement in air quality.</text>

                <text>La presente investigación afronta la evaluación del riesgo como una estrategia de adaptación al cambio climático. Para ello se ha desarrollado una metodología de análisis del riesgo a nivel de parcela catastral en una de las principales áreas turísticas tanto de las Islas Canarias como de España, el litoral de Arona y Adeje. El método fundamentado en los planteamientos de la Oficina de Naciones Unidas para el Socorro en Casos de Desastres (UNDRO) y aplicado para las inundaciones con efecto de avenida, ha posibilitado definir de forma precisa los factores que intervienen en la formulación del riesgo. El empleo de los registros de incidentes del Centro Coordinador de Emergencias y Seguridad (CECOES) 1-1-2 del Gobierno de Canarias, así como otras fuentes oficiales, ha permitido la caracterización de la amenaza. Del mismo modo para el estudio de la vulnerabilidad se ha empleado un índice resultante entre 0 y 1, derivado del cruce de múltiples indicadores socio-territoriales. Los resultados demuestran como las áreas estudiadas disponen del 52,4% de las parcelas con niveles de riesgo comprendidos entre “Moderados” y “Muy Altos”, destacando los núcleos de Torviscas, Las Américas y Los Cristianos. Finalmente se presenta el resultado del análisis de riesgo a través de una cartografía del riesgo de inundación, diseñada en última instancia como herramienta de adaptación para la futura toma de decisiones por parte de las diferentes administraciones locales.</text>

                <text>La adquisición de saberes digitales, así como la promoción de pensamiento crítico para la gestión de la dieta de medios, son urgencias de las actuales sociedades mediáticas. En ese sentido, los comunicadores juegan un papel importante en la configuración de dichos mecanismos, pues son mediadores y generadores de estructuras comunicativas dentro de las ecologías hipercomunicadas recientes. Así, esta investigación analiza los niveles de competencia digital en estudiantes de comunicación de una universidad mexicana. Para proceder con la propuesta se utilizó como soporte teórico el Marco Común de Competencia Digital Docente (europeo) 2017, se reportan los hallazgos sobre dos de las cinco áreas que integran tal marco: 1) información y alfabetización informacional y 2) creación de contenidos digitales. Para el análisis, los sujetos son agrupados en universidad baja y universidad alta en función de su grado de avance en la carrera con la intención de buscar posibles relaciones entre los años de escolaridad y la competencia digital que poseen. Para tal fin, fueron empleadas pruebas no paramétricas (Chi-cuadrado y Test Exacto de Fisher). Los resultados arrojan que no necesariamente avanzar en los estudios universitarios representa la adquisición de la competencia estudiada.</text>

Discusión: Como tendencia los enfoques de seguridad alimentaria se clasifican en tradicional y emergente, así como por su evolución temporal en etapas, en este estudio se clasifican en tradicional, de seguridad alimentaria y nutricional, emergente y se propone el enfoque de seguridad alimentaria sostenible./Introduction: The present work aims to propose the sustainable food security approach as a response to emerging challenges.Method: The structure of identification of approaches is used, 1) theoretical foundations, of a scientific - particular type, 2) epistemic objectification and 3) functional evaluation, supported by the documentary analysis of theoretical studies, methodologies, institutional documents and projects.Results: The sustainable food security approach is proposed, its possible response to emerging challenges through the link between the selected indicators and these challenges, as well as the principles under which it should operate.Discussion: As a trend, food security approaches are classified as traditional and emerging, as well as by their temporal evolution in stages, in this study they are classified as traditional, food and nutritional security, emergent and the sustainable food security approach is proposed.</text>

                <text>El presente artículo tiene como objetivo clasificar los factores determinantes de la seguridad alimentaria por dimensiones a escala municipal. Para ello se analizan metodologías nacionales y foráneas, así como leyes, programas y políticas vinculadas a este proceso de gestión. Como resultado de la revisión documental se identifican y clasifican estos factores, así como su relación con los eslabones de las cadenas productivas. Además, se valoran las limitaciones para su gestión a nivel municipal. Ello pudiera emplearse por los Consejos de la Administración Municipal en Cuba, en el diseño de estrategias, programas y en la evaluación de este objetivo de desarrollo sostenible. Se clasificaron 15 factores entre las cuatro dimensiones: seis en la disponibilidad, cuatro en el acceso, tres en la estabilidad y cinco en el aprovechamiento biológico de los alimentos. De ellos seis se consideran relevantes para el desarrollo del enfoque de cadenas en la gestión de la seguridad alimentaria y desde la óptica organizacional el propio enfoque puede convertirse en un factor determinante para el incremento de la seguridad alimentaria.</text>

                <text>La soberanía y la seguridad alimentaria se encuentran en un momento de crisis, sobre todo en los países pobres donde aumentan el número de personas subnutridas y sus gobiernos cada día tienen menos capacidad de respuesta producto de las políticas neoliberales. En este contexto los estudios dedicados al tema han ganado espacio en el ámbito científico mundial, y en el cubano. Determinar la influencia de las políticas de soberanía y seguridad alimentaria en la producción y consumo de alimentos en Cuba constituye la esencia de este trabajo. Para obtener los resultados deseados se analiza, en el período 1980 – 2008 la producción agrícola y las importaciones de alimentos, así como el aporte productivo de las formas de propiedad estatal y no estatal. La integración de estos componentes permite llegar a la conclusión, que las políticas de soberanía y seguridad alimentaria no han logrado hasta el momento organizar el espacio rural con la suficiente autonomía y eficiencia, para obtener una producción que elimine la dependencia alimentaria.</text>

                <text>Para determinar los hábitos tróficos de la lechuza, Tyto alba, se analizaron 1232 egagrópilas recolectadas entre 1994 y 2001 en 24 localidades de la región central de Cuba. Se encontraron 3943 presas; los roedores exóticos (Mus musculus y Rattus spp.) fueron las presas dominantes y representaron 80% del total. Otros tipos de presas fueron de menor frecuencia; por ejemplo, insectos (6.1%), murciélagos (5%), anfibios (4.8%), aves (3.6%) y reptiles (0.2%). Se agruparon las localidades de recolecta de egagrópilas en 2 categorías de hábitat: antropogénicos y naturales, para explorar el efecto de los disturbios antrópicos en la dieta de la lechuza. Contrario a lo esperado, no se encontró variación significativa en el índice de amplitud trófica de Levins (Bantropogénicos= 1.32 ± 0.3 vs Bnaturales = 1.38 ± 0.4). La composición de la dieta en ambos hábitats no difiere, al menos en la proporción de las diferentes clases, aunque existe la tendencia a depredar más aves en hábitats naturales que en sitios perturbados donde los insectos son más frecuentes. Los resultados sugieren que tanto en hábitats antropogénicos como naturales, las lechuzas se comportan como depredadores efectivos de las poblaciones de roedores múridos introducidos.To determine food habits of Barn Owl, Tyto alba, we analyzed 1232 pellets collected from 24 localities in central Cuba from 1994 to 2001. The pellets yielded 3943 prey items, with introduced rodents (Mus musculus and Rattus spp.) being the primary prey, accounting for 80% of items in the diet. Other prey classes were of minor frequency; e.g., insects (6.1%), bats (5%), amphibians (4.8%), birds (3.6%), and reptiles (0.2%).We grouped pellet collection localities into 2 habitat categories: 'anthropogenic' and 'natural,' to explore the effect of anthropogenic disturbance on the diet Barn Owl. Contrary to our expectation, we found no significant difference in the Levin's niche-breadth index (B), calculated for the taxonomic classes of prey, between the 2 habitats (Banthropogenic= 1.32 ± 0.3 vs Bnatural = 1.38 ± 0.4). The composition of owl diets in both habitats did not differ, at least in prey classes, although pellets collected in natural habitats contained more birds than those from disturbed sites where insects were more frequents. Our data suggest that in both natural and anthropogenic habitat, the barn owls behave as effective predator of the populations of introduced murid rodents.</text>

                <text>Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus, of the family Coronaviridae and the order Nidovirales. FCoV is an important pathogen of wild and domestic cats and can cause a mild or apparently symptomless enteric infection, especially in kittens. FCoV is also associated with a lethal, systemic disease known as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Although the precise cause of FIP pathogenesis remains unclear, some hypotheses have been suggested. In this review we present results from different FCoV studies and attempt to elucidate existing theories on the pathogenesis of FCoV infection.</text>
