<text> The field works is still a hard way for the teacher; however, they represent a major step for the study of biodiversity. Our country is considered mega-diverse but teaching this subject is complex. The objective of this study was to outline a protocol for field works so that the teachers can implement it during their lectures about biodiversity. The ants were chosen as study model since they are rich and abundant in most tropical ecosystems. Sardine baits were used in edible oil to collect these insects; and in order to obtain enough volume of biological material to base the discussions concerning the proposed issue three collection expeditions will be required, using 15 baits each. </text>

Dessa forma, pode-se considerar que o reconhecimento explícito da estrutura espacial dos processos naturais, por meio da análise da autocorrelação espacial, é um novo paradigma dos estudos ecológicosThe aim of this paper was to evaluate the influence of the spatial autocorrelation (absence of independence among observations gathered along geographical space) in ecological studies. For this task, an evaluation of the studies that used spatial autocorrelation analysis was carried out using the data furnished by the Institute for Scientific Information. There is a positive temporal tendency in the number of studies that used spatial autocorrelation analysis. A significant autocorrelation was detected in most studies. Moreover, scientist of several nationalities carried out these studies in different countries, with different organisms and in different types of ecosystems. In this way, it is possible to consider that the explicit incorporation of the spatial structure of natural processes, through the autocorrelation analysis, is a new ecological paradigm</text>

Constatamos uma clara segregação entre as espécies de riachos de cabeceiras e de trechos mais caudalosos dos rios ou mesmo de riachos com maior vazãoThe aim of this paper is to describe the patterns of associations between fish species and their distribution in lotic habitats at basin level. Samples were accomplished in 27 localities of Iguatemi river basin, distributed in four environments (Iguatemi river, Jogui river, Puitã river and streams). The presence/absence data of those species which occurred in 2 or more sites were submitted at multivariate methods with the aim to describe the major species associations. The species distribution was considered determinative in these communities (C-score = 17,33; P = 0,000), with significant difference among the studied environments (ANOSIM r = 0,082; P = 0,012), with verified difference between Iguatemi river and streams (P = 0,001) and also streams and Jogui river (P = 0,014). We verified a strong segregation among species from headstreams and more discharge river stretches or even larger streams</text>

<text>Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o crescimento do camarão Farfantepenaeus subtilis submetido a diferentes regimes de fertilização usando fertilizantes orgânicos e inorgânicos. This work aimed to evaluate the growth of the shrimp Farfantepenaeus subtilis submitted to different fertilization regimes using organic and inorganic fertilizers. The experimental design consisted of three treatments in triplicate: control (CT) – 3 mg L-1 of urea and 0.3 mg L-1 of monoammonium phosphate; wheat bran (FT) – 25 g m-2; and soybean bran (FS) – 18.75 g m-2. Nine 500 L fiber glass tanks were stocked with 16 shrimp m-2 (≈ 2.7 g). Animals were fed daily with pelleted feed (35% crude protein). Biweekly, water quality was monitored and shrimp samples were collected to evaluate growth and adjust the feed quantity. Water quality maintained adequate to shrimp culture during the experimental period. Growth results did not differ significantly (p > 0.05) among treatments. Mean growth rate and survival were 0.44 g week-1 and 75%, respectively. Therefore, the protocols evaluated were efficient for shrimp growth and water quality maintenance.</text>

The collection procedures were standardized in every stream. The stomach contents of the individuals were analyzed qualitative and quantitatively. The food items consumed by the species varied in number, and the main food item consumed differed in each stream. Thus, it was found: vegetable remains and debris, in Cambé; debris, in Taquari; filamentous algae and vegetable remains, in the Água da Floresta; and debris and remains of insects, in Baroré stream. The behavior shift from generalist to specialist strategy as well as the use of detritus as the main food, which can only be found in the river bottom, can indicate that stretches of streams with slower and deeper waters are not preferred by B. iheringii, as neither they are for some groups of aquatic insects which are used as food resource by this fish species</text>

The prevalence of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL) has been historically associated with the degradation of the environment in urban and agricultural areas. The ATL is an illness of obliged notification, remaining endemic in Maringá. The aim of this work was to identify the nature of the cases of Leishmaniose occurred in the residential complex Inocente Vila Nova Júnior and the actions carried out for the vector’s control. The ATL samples were collected with the data base of the Secretaria Municipal de Saúde, Coordenação Municipal de Epidemiologia, Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN), from 2001 to 2003. After the investigation of the cases, considered autochthonous, combat actions against the vector in the local bush area. Results show that the urban area, considered as reference and sociability between men and nature, starts to have the quality of aggravating space when it creates life forms inside of a non-balanced system that can infect the men. Thus, it is important to have scientific studies and planning for these areas, protecting its functions and impacts to the society.</text>

Comprovamos através do índice de co-ocorrência (C-score) das espécies que sua composição nos riachos estudados é estocásticaAiming to describe the patterns of the fish assemblages organization in streams of the Iguatemi River basin we sampled streams with seine nets and sieves from November/1999 to August/2000. We collected 567 individuals distributed in 24 species. We detected statistically significant influence of the streams characteristics upon species diversity. The species composition was hardly explained by the physical and chemical characteristics of the streams. Then we detected significant influence of the fish ecomorphology in the species occurrence (Mantel r = -0,34; P = 0,04), but not in the distribution of its abundance (Mantel r = -0,21; P = 0,07). We verified through the species co-occurrence index (C-score) that its composition in the studied streams is stochastic</text>
