Evaluar la actividad antibacteriana de diferentes fracciones de la cáscara de cacao (Theobroma cacao L.). Materiales y métodos. Se evaluó la actividad antibacteriana mediante el método de difusión en agar de diferentes fracciones de la cáscara de cacao, empleando cepas autóctonas y de referencia ATCC. Posteriormente, se hizo un análisis de estas fracciones por cromatografía líquida de alta eficiencia y cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas. Resultados. La fracción clorofórmica presentó actividad antibacteriana frente a Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778 y Streptococcus agalactiae (autóctona), con porcentajes de inhibición de 34.90% (100 μg/μl) y 52.40% (100 μg/μl) respectivamente. También se evidenció una concentración mínima inhibitoria de 512 μg/ml frente a Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778 y de 128 μg/ml frente a Streptococcus agalactiae. Conclusiones. Este trabajo es el primer reporte a saber en Colombia sobre actividad antibacteriana in vitro de la cáscara de cacao, el cual resulta ser un avance importante para esta agroindustria. Esta investigación abre paso a otros estudios relacionados para establecer el espectro de inhibición frente a otros microorganismos. Se evaluó porcentaje de daño, porcentaje de control y rendimiento al momento de cosecha (t ha-1). Los resultados indicaron que las cepas comerciales en combinación Metaril® W.P + B. brongniartii® W.P (T6) y el aislamiento autóctono de Beauveria sp. Bv01 (T1), presentaron los menores porcentajes de daño (3,1±0,06 y 3,5±0,2%), los mayores porcentajes de control (77±0,46 y 76,7±1,78%), y la mejor producción (19±0,40t ha-1 y 18±0,25t ha-1) con diferencias significativas (Duncan p≤0,05) respecto a los demás tratamientos y el control regional. Se destacó el T6, ya que mostró el mejor potencial biológico por su rendimiento en cosecha, representando una alternativa promisoria para el control de P. vorax al ser incorporado dentro de un esquema de manejo integrado de la plaga en la región. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron describir la composición de la dieta de Acromyrmex striatus, conocer preferencias de la dieta de acuerdo a la oferta vegetal presente y lograr un aporte al manejo de la plaga en el cultivo de la vid. El estudio se realizó en un viñedo con manejo orgánico. Se colectaron los fragmentos transportados por las obreras de A. striatus. Los datos fueron tomados estacionalmente durante un año en un total de 16 colonias activas. El material colectado fue clasificado en material verde o seco y en monocotiledóneas o dicotiledóneas, además se registró la cantidad y el peso de fragmentos colectados. Los resultados indicaron que A. striatus colectó más fragmentos en los meses de verano. Predominó la colecta de monocotiledóneas y prefirieron el material vegetal verde en todas las estaciones estudiadas. Por lo tanto, se podría concluir que el uso de abono verde en los interfilares podría ser un recurso para el manejo de A. striatus en el viñedo, siempre y cuando estas especies vegetales no compitan con el cultivo. Se colectó la raíz, los tallos y las hojas del pasto en cuatro zonas agroecológicas del municipio de Corozal, Sucre, Colombia, durante el segundo semestre del año 2012. Cada tejido fue sometido a proceso de desinfección superficial. Se aislaron bacterias endófitas en medio de cultivo agar R2A, a partir de cada tejido se determinó la densidad poblacional (UFC/g de tejido), por conteo en superficie; la separación de morfotipos se realizó mediante la forma, color, tamaño y apariencia. La actividad fijadora de nitrógeno y solubilizadora de fosfato se evaluó in vitro sobre medios de cultivos específicos. Todos los resultados obtenidos fueron analizados utilizando el programa estadístico R. Hubo diferencias significativas para densidades poblacional de bacterias con respecto a tejido, con mayores valores en raíz (1,61 x 1010/g raíz), seguida de tallo (7,44 x 109/g tallo) y los valores más bajos se reportaron para hojas (5,42 x 109/g hoja). Se encontró significancia entre la densidad poblacional con relación a los factores de zona, fincas y tipo de tejido analizado. Los resultados de la identificación con kit API20E confirmaron la presencia de las bacterias endófitas Aeromonas salmonicida y Pasteurella pneumotropica con capacidad simultánea de solubilizar fosfatos y fijar nitrógeno. Tradicionalmente, el café se cultiva con pocos insumos bajo la sombra de árboles de la familia de las leguminosas y de otros arbustos. En años recientes con la adopción de cultivares de alta productividad, notable precocidad y tamaño reducido se está produciendo café a plena exposición solar con fertilización mineral y uso de pesticidas. Las propiedades microbiológicas del suelo especialmente aquellas relacionadas con el flujo de energía y el reciclaje de nutrientes responden de forma rápida y sensible a los cambios de las condiciones del suelo mucho antes que por ejemplo el carbono orgánico, y de este modo, suministran una información anticipada sobre las alteraciones de la calidad del mismo. En este estudio se comparó la actividad microbiológica (respiración basal), la biomasa microbiana y los parámetros ecofisiológicos en suelos a nivel superficial (0-5 cm) de ocho fincas cafetaleras en los municipios de Mérida y Trujillo donde se encuentran tres sistemas de producción: tradicional, convencional y orgánico. Las fincas con agricultura orgánica presentaron los mayores valores de carbono orgánico total, carbono hidrosoluble, respiración basal y biomasa microbiana en comparación con las de manejo tradicional y convencional; con lo cual la producción orgánica es un sistema de manejo más sostenible por la mayor conservación de los recursos naturales y la producción más amigable y armónica con el ambiente. En el caso del manejo convencional, la adición de fertilizantes y pesticidas afecta de forma negativa el bienestar de los microorganismos y los hace más ineficientes en el uso del carbono y la energía. Coleóptera: Curculionidae), es una de las principales plagas del grano en “post cosecha”. Las pérdidas anuales de post cosecha de cultivos de cereales son el resultado de daños de insectos, degradación microbiana y otros factores, se estima de 10 al 25 % de pérdida de producción a nivel mundial. Tradicionalmente estas plagas se controlan con insecticidas químicos que si no se manejan adecuadamente, ocasionan problemas de contaminación ambiental y residuos en alimentos. Como una alternativa está el uso de insecticidas naturales que son menos tóxicos y pueden ser elaborados por los agricultores. Entre los insecticidas naturales están los compuestos derivados de nicotina, piretrinas naturales, neem (Azaradichtina) y las hojas, flores y extractos del árbol llama del bosque, que pueden constituir una alternativa para el control de plagas en granos almacenados como el gorgojo del maíz. En esta investigación se realizaron ensayos para determinar la actividad repelente e insecticida de hojas y flores de llama del bosque, así como de los extractos respectivos, en una cámara con túnel de viento del laboratorio de ecología química de insectos de ECOSUR, Tapachula, Chiapas, México. Con base en los resultados obtenidos se determinó efecto repelente de flores y hojas sobre gorgojos del maíz en concentración de 2 g/200 g de maíz a las 2 y 17 horas de aplicación. La mayor actividad insecticida se presentó a las 12 horas de la aplicación de extractos y el mejor efecto insecticida fue con el extracto de flores en concentraciones de 2.0 y 1.5 mg/ml. Con este trabajo elaborado durante los años 2016 y 2017, resultado del análisis estadístico clásico de registros de acumulados pluviales de 8 estaciones brindados por la Dirección General del Observatorio Ambiental, Ministerio del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales de El Salvador (DGOA-MARN), hemos querido, como objetivo, mostrar su comportamiento para un período de 45 años (1971-2015) y analizar su posible asociación con la variabilidad de la Actividad Solar y Geomagnética en la región de Centroamérica, para cuya región no hemos encontrado publicaciones originales anteriores donde se acometa dicho análisis. Se muestran los resultados estadísticos clásicos de las series de tiempo obtenidas, para cada una de las Estaciones y en su conjunto, ofreciendo las conclusiones positivas de los autores en cuanto a la validez de la hipótesis de asociación. La fragmentación de los bosques, el cambio del uso del suelo, las especies introducidas y el cambio climático son factores que durante las últimas décadas han afectado ostensiblemente a la biodiversidad herpetofaunística de todo el Planeta; siendo una de las regiones más afectadas la del Neotrópico. En el presente trabajo se analizan algunos de estos factores y su influencia negativa sobre la composición y diversidad de herpetofauna en esta región, resaltando la presencia de Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis como elemento sustancial que está conduciendo a la extinción a muchas especies de anfibios en Latinoamérica. Serum analysis from SSc patients showed an increase in the enzyme activity of xylosyltransferase (XT), the initial enzyme in PG biosynthesis. There are two distinct XT isoforms—XT-I and XT-II—in humans, but until now only XT-I is associated with fibrotic remodelling for an unknown reason. The aim of this study was to identify new XT mediators and clarify the underlying mechanisms, in view of developing putative therapeutic anti-fibrotic interventions in the future. Therefore, we used different cytokines and growth factors, small molecule inhibitors as well as small interfering RNAs, and assessed the cellular XT activity and XYLT1 expression in primary human dermal fibroblasts by radiochemical activity assays and qRT-PCR. We identified a new function of activin A as a regulator of XYLT1 mRNA expression and XT activity. While the activin A-induced XT-I increase was found to be mediated by activin A receptor type 1B, MAPK and Smad pathways, the activin A treatment did not alter the XYLT2 expression. Furthermore, we observed a reciprocal regulation of XYLT1 and XYLT2 transcription after inhibition of the activin A pathway components. These results improve the understanding of the differential expression regulation of XYLT isoforms under pathological fibroproliferative conditions.
