There was an abrupt obligatory transformation into e-learning. This study aimed to examine views of faculty members on the use of e-learning in Saudi medical and health colleges during COVID-19 pandemic, and their preparedness for e-learning in the light of the complete lockdown due to the pandemic. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was conducted in two parts. The first part was a pilot study aimed to provide valuable validation of the content of the major questionnaire study. The second part was a full-scale study designed to address the aim. An electronic questionnaire was prepared and distributed to reach a large number of faculties and primarily focused on three sections demographic information, experience with e-learning before and after COVID-19 pandemic, and preparedness for e-learning. Results: A total of 38 and 220 faculty members participated in the pilot and full-scale studies, respectively. The majority of respondents to the main questionnaire were male (73.2%), from Riyadh (42.7%), worked in governmental colleges (96.3%), and had different academic ranking and teaching experiences. Faculty members showed positive attitudes towards the use of e-learning which was tremendously increased post-COVID-19 (91.9%) compared to pre-COVID-19 (45.9%). Most of the participants were enthusiastic (82.3%) about and confident in using e-learning in teaching and learning. Yet, e-learning was not entirely used as a substitute for hands-on skill training and assessment. Conclusions: This study provides stakeholders with valuable standpoints indispensability of e-learning and the positive attitude and proficiency of teaching staff toward it. This urges furthering our institutional e-learning preparedness and engagement through resolving some appeared individual and infrastructural shortcomings. It is an appropriate time for overcoming barriers to e-learning/teaching as an integral teaching modality in medical and health colleges. Closing this gap could facilitate messaging to promote COVID-19 risk mitigation behaviors. In July 2020, a five-question text message survey was sent to 1,087 youth aged 14-24 years. Questions assessed youths' perceptions regarding the likelihood of contracting COVID-19, the potential impact of contracting COVID-19 on their lives, the possibility of spreading COVID-19 to others, and their use of face coverings around others with whom they do not live. Coding was conducted to assign responses to discrete categories and to identify common themes. Of 1,087 eligible participants, 797 (73.3%) were included in analyses. Of these participants, 27.3% believed they would likely contract COVID-19 in the next few months, 90.3% believed contracting COVID-19 would have a moderate or significant impact on their lives, 86.0% were moderately or very concerned about spreading COVID-19, and 89.2% reported wearing face coverings all or most of the time. Factors affecting face covering use included the desire to avoid contracting and spreading COVID-19, peer influence, and policy mandates. Youths' perceptions regarding the risk of contracting COVID-19 varied, but most believed their lives would be adversely impacted if this occurred. Most youth were concerned about spreading COVID-19 and wore face coverings, but many made exceptions to face covering use when around close contacts. Public health campaigns may be most effective if they leverage positive peer influence and appeal to youths' desire not to spread COVID-19 to others. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com esquema fatorial 4 x 4 (cultivares e doses), com cinco repetições. Foram utilizadas sementes de cenoura das cultivares Brasília, Danvers, Esplanada e Planalto, e o recobrimento das sementes foi realizado com as doses de 0, 2, 4 e 8 mL.L-1 de bioestimulante. Após o recobrimento as sementes foram submetidas as seguintes avaliações: porcentagem e velocidade de germinação, comprimento de plântulas, massa seca de plântulas e envelhecimento acelerado.   Os resultados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de variância e à análise de regressão (doses) e teste de Tukey (cultivares). Não houve melhorias na germinação e crescimento de plântulas de cenoura em condições adequadas de temperatura, contudo observou-se maior velocidade de germinação na temperatura de 30°C para a cultivar Brasília, incremento no crescimento de parte aérea e de raiz de plântulas na temperatura de 30°C para as cultivares Esplanada e Planalto e massa seca de raiz para a cultivar Brasília na temperatura ideal. It is possible to completely sequence a small genome within days and this increases the number of publicly available genomes. Among the types of genomes being rapidly sequenced are those of microbial and viral genomes responsible for infectious diseases. However, accurate gene prediction is a challenge that persists for decoding a newly sequenced genome. Therefore, accurate and efficient gene prediction programs are highly desired for rapid and cost effective surveillance of RNA viruses through full genome sequencing. Results We have developed VIGOR (Viral Genome ORF Reader), a web application tool for gene prediction in influenza virus, rotavirus, rhinovirus and coronavirus subtypes. VIGOR detects protein coding regions based on sequence similarity searches and can accurately detect genome specific features such as frame shifts, overlapping genes, embedded genes, and can predict mature peptides within the context of a single polypeptide open reading frame. Genotyping capability for influenza and rotavirus is built into the program. We compared VIGOR to previously described gene prediction programs, ZCURVE_V, GeneMarkS and FLAN. The specificity and sensitivity of VIGOR are greater than 99% for the RNA viral genomes tested. Conclusions VIGOR is a user friendly web-based genome annotation program for five different viral agents, influenza, rotavirus, rhinovirus, coronavirus and SARS coronavirus. This is the first gene prediction program for rotavirus and rhinovirus for public access. VIGOR is able to accurately predict protein coding genes for the above five viral types and has the capability to assign function to the predicted open reading frames and genotype influenza virus. The prediction software was designed for performing high throughput annotation and closure validation in a post-sequencing production pipeline. La reunión se desarrolló bajo el lema “confluencia de diversas miradas”, en alusión al abordaje multidisciplinario que caracteriza al estudio de los parasitoides y en analogía a la posición geográfica de la provincia de La Pampa en el centro del país a la que confluyen caminos desde los cuatro puntos cardinales. El logotipo de la reunión incluye una representación de Hydrangeocola llaollinMartínez (Hymenoptera, Braconidae), especie recientemente descripta a partir de ejemplares procedentes de la periferia de Santa Rosa cuyos representantes se comportan como endoparasitoides larvales de dípteros cecidómidos inductores de agallas en el llaollín, Lycium chilense (Solanaceae). También incluye una síntesis de los diseños presentes en los textiles autóctonos de la provincia. Esta reunión fue organizada por docentes – investigadores, becarios y tesistas que desarrollan sus actividades en las Facultades de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales y de Agronomía de la Universidad Nacional de La Pampa, INTA Estación Experimental Agropecuaria Anguil y CONICET. La RAP es un evento que se desarrolla periódicamente desde el año 2006 en diversas ciudades del país y pretende contribuir a la consolidación de los estudios sobre parasitoides, línea temática de valor teórico y aplicado al manejo de plagas, así como incrementar el intercambio de información, experiencias y vínculos entre investigadores de todo el país. Al evento asistieron 55 colegas nacionales, provenientes de las provincias de Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Corrientes, La Pampa, Mendoza, San Juan, Tucumán y Rio Negro, así como también de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires. Durante este evento se expusieron como presentaciones orales 35 trabajos científicos en las siguientes sesiones: Control Biológico; Biología, Fisiología y Comportamiento; Sistemática, Taxonomía y Biodiversidad; Ecología de Poblaciones y Comunidades y Tesis Doctorales. Al inicio de cada sesión temática, destacados especialistas brindaron conferencias de apertura. Los disertantes invitados fueron: Dra. Consequently, vimentin has complex implications in pathophysiology. Vimentin is required for a proper immune response, but it can also act as an autoantigen in autoimmune diseases or as a damage signal. Although vimentin is a predominantly cytoplasmic protein, it can also appear at extracellular locations, either in a secreted form or at the surface of numerous cell types, often in relation to cell activation, inflammation, injury or senescence. Cell surface targeting of vimentin appears to associate with the occurrence of certain posttranslational modifications, such as phosphorylation and/or oxidative damage. At the cell surface, vimentin can act as a receptor for bacterial and viral pathogens. Indeed, vimentin has been shown to play important roles in virus attachment and entry of severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SARS-CoV), dengue and encephalitis viruses, among others. Moreover, the presence of vimentin in specific virus-targeted cells and its induction by proinflammatory cytokines and tissue damage contribute to its implication in viral infection. Here, we recapitulate some of the pathophysiological implications of vimentin, including the involvement of cell surface vimentin in interaction with pathogens, with a special focus on its role as a cellular receptor or co-receptor for viruses. In addition, we provide a perspective on approaches to target vimentin, including antibodies or chemical agents that could modulate these interactions to potentially interfere with viral pathogenesis, which could be useful when multi-target antiviral strategies are needed.
