The current agri-food system subordinates agriculture and small retail (in the two ends of the food chain) to the agricultural inputs and food processing industries and to the large retail sector. The periurban agriculture also suffers the urban growth pressure that causes the deterioration and disappearance of the agrarian territory close to the cities, formerly the base of the urban food supply. In addition, markets, which had served as food entry point into the city for a long time, are now gradually losing sellers and consumers. The objective of this research is to explore the possibilities of an alliance between Madrid’s municipal markets and its periurban agrarian territory to favor proximity production and consumption, sizing both the farming territory’s capacity and the food demand that might be covered by the markets to evaluate scenarios for a possible territorialization of this alliance.
