<text>Affirmative action generates controversy in society. In the case of the quota of family agriculture, there is no effective acceptance by the academic and general community in the reservation of vacancies for this social group. In this way, the objectives are: to analyze the purpose of affirmative actions; and to describe the origin and motivation for the creation of the quota of family agriculture for the Technical Course in Agriculture of IFC/Campus Concórdia. The methodology used was a case study, with bibliographical research and documentary analysis. As a result, it was verified that this quota was created in compliance with the agreement established with SETEC/MEC. It was pointed out that the option for family agriculture aimed at addressing the local realities of the campi and institutional commitments to social justice, inclusion of socially disadvantaged groups, among others. Affirmative action is considered as a tool capable of reducing inequalities in access to public education and can be adapted to the needs of institutions.</text>
