Devido à diversidade da população rural, optou-se por investigar o saneamento no contexto da agricultura familiar, grupo que representa 84% dos estabelecimentos rurais brasileiros e tem grande importância social, econômica e cultural. Foram realizados quatro estudos de caso, e o corpus da pesquisa se desenvolveu segundo princípios da Grounded Theory, com a obtenção de dados a partir da aplicação simultânea de técnicas qualitativas distintas e posteriormente submetidos à análise de conteúdo. Os resultados são indicativos da relevância de aspectos socioculturais sobre as práticas sanitárias, revelando a consciência da importância da preservação da natureza com as noções de risco de contaminação da água por águas residuárias e resíduos sólidos. Isso tem influência direta em práticas vigentes, como a separação de resíduos sólidos e o manejo adequado das águas pluviais.
