Algunas de las principales amenazas para la biodiversidad son la fragmentación y pérdida del hábitat por la deforestación provocada por actividades humanas; lo que a su vez acelera los índices de extinción en las especies. Sin embargo, la biodiversidad es difícil de cuantificar y medir, por lo cual la teledetección es una herramienta valiosa para las investigaciones ecológicas ya que, dadas sus características de resolución espacial, espectral, radiométrica y temporal, se hace posible tratar de medir ciertas variables de biodiversidad. No obstante, los ecologistas y las agencias espaciales, en un trabajo conjunto, han definido una lista de variables esenciales con las que se pueda monitorear la biodiversidad desde el espacio.
