Con un diseño claro, este enfoque aporta un alto grado de precisión en la conformación y definición de muestras, permite diferenciar y ubicar las cohortes en una escala mayor para realizar comparaciones de cohortes entre sí e intracohorte, y caracteriza los grupos en profundidad en relación con variables socioinstitucionales. Así mismo, permite caracterizar la naturaleza del sistema literario en un momento dado: una ecología temporal. Su operacionalización no se apoya ni recae sobre variables ideológicas, como sucede con el concepto de generación. Para concluir, cotejamos dos estudios cuyos resultados obtenidos no podrían haberse alcanzado mediante el concepto de generación, por lo cual el enfoque por cohortes se manifiesta como una nueva herramienta para la periodización en la historia del arte y de la literatura.
