Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze the evolution of PRONAF in the south region of Brazil, especially in Rio Grande do Sul, in the period 1999-2010. The methodology employed was based on information gathering on databases such as MDA, MAPA, BB and IBGE. The study identified that in the beginning of the period the states of the south region of the country received more than half of the resources from PRONAF. Throughout the period examined, the other regions, especially the northeast, increased their share of the total resources, but the south region kept its position as the main receiver. In this region, Rio Grande do Sul occupies the first place in terms of number of contracts and values received, employing the resources to plantation of, mainly, corn and soya beans.</text>
