It surely owes much to the legacy of Carthaginian (or Phoenician, in general) agriculture, about which we have little knowledge; instead, we do find a useful reference point in Xenophon and Theophrast's works. The need also arises to study the climatic-botanical conditions of a territory in order to know its agricultural resources; we refer to cultivations and tools focusing specially on how important the use of the iron ploughshare turned out to be. Finally, we deal with some issues related to labour force social conditions, land property and niche imbalances, always looking at the Italian Peninsula out of the corner of our eye.
