This study is an analysis of the geographical and altitudinal distribution of the native Colombian bamboos; the Olyrodae (herbaceous bamboos) and the Bambusodae (woody bamboos) are discussed separately. In Colombia, 64% of the herbaceous bamboos occur in the Amazon region, between 0 and 500 m above sea level; the greatest number and diversity of herbaceous bamboos can be found in the Chocó region; 95% of woody bamboos occur in the Andean region, at elevations between 2000 and 3000 m, with the Cordillera Oriental (Eastern mountain range) being the richest and most diverse region for woody bamboos.</text>
