Su creciente demanda se ha visto reflejada en la expansión de los cultivos utilizados como materias primas, lo cual tiene implicaciones en varios frentes: los cambios de uso de la tierra, servicios ecosistémicos relacionados con el recurso hídrico, las emisiones de Gases Efecto Invernadero (GEI), la seguridad alimentaria y la propiedad de la tierra. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo presentar un análisis crítico de estos temas a partir de la revisión de la literatura internacional y abordar el caso colombiano, en particular la expansión de los cultivos de palma africana y sus implicaciones sociales. Los principales resultados dejan ver que la expansión de los cultivos se direccionará hacia los países del trópico, lo cual genera  impactos negativos al intensificar la competencia por el agua y la tierra en regiones caracterizadas por su alta vulnerabilidad ecosistémica y social. Adicionalmente se observa la necesidad de mejorar los sistemas de información y de refinar metodologías y modelos que permitan evaluar con mayor precisión los impactos de la producción de biocombustibles sobre el bienestar humano.
