This article analyzes, through an ethnographic approach, citizen participation in a food security project that has developed over ten years in a low-income neighborhood in Montreal (Canada). The “Food System for All” is a project promoting dignified access to healthy food for all. It is characterized by the involvement of people experiencing social exclusion and poverty as actors, along with practitioners and researchers. We examine the place and roles of citizens in the project, from the first spontaneous actions to the operationalization of a multidimensional food system. We discuss the results in terms of their contribution to improve food access, to further empowerment and a global perspective on food.
