En la actualidad, la introducción de especies es considerada una de las principales amenazas para la conservación de la biodiversidad, principalmente en ecosistemas insulares. Entre abril de 2008 y mayo de 2011 se realizaron recorridos en la cayería norte de Ciego de Ávila con el objetivo de inventariar las plantas introducidas. En el área existen 27 especies alóctonas, que pertenecen a 25 géneros y 17 familias, siendo éstas mejor representadas en el bosque siempre verde micrófilo y en la vegetación ruderal. La mayoría de las plantas listadas proceden de Asia y América, y su llegada al cayo se relaciona con el creciente desarrollo turístico. De éstas, siete son invasoras-transformadoras, ocho se clasifican como potencialmente invasoras, una es naturalizada no invasora y 11 son subespontáneas.
