De esta necesidad surge la idea del uso de herramientas tecnológicas que permitan al productor utilizar de una manera eficiente los suelos agrícolas. Este trabajo propone el desarrollo de una herramienta basada en optimización para garantizar el uso adecuado del suelo, mientras se maximiza la ganancia del sistema de producción de alimentos. Específicamente, se considera un problema de optimización de programación lineal, donde se toman en cuenta variables tales como costo de inversión/costo por hectárea, capital inicial de inversión, área de siembra disponible, área sembrada de cada producto, y la ganancia neta por hectárea de cada producto. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que la herramienta propuesta alcanza un margen de ganancia mayor si se compara con la siembra empírica, utilizando siempre de manera eficiente el área de producción.
