Cárdenas Ferrer Description An account of the resource Se presenta el diagnóstico de la gestión de residuos sólidos urbanos (RSU) en Manta,  Ecuador. Se caracterizaron los residuos generados, clasificándolos según origen, composición y se evaluó el impacto ambiental mediante Análisis de Ciclo de Vida,  según la norma ISO 14040:2006, utilizando el software SimaPro 9.0.0.35 y método Recipe Midpoint. Los resultados muestran la inadecuada gestión de RSU en Manta. La generación per cápita es 0,94 kg/hab/día y la mayor cantidad de residuos es de tipo  orgánico y plásticos. Los principales impactos están dados por la disposición final de  residuos, que afecta todas las categorías de impacto, fundamentalmente al Calentamiento Global, eutrofización marina y de agua dulce, eco toxicidad marina y del  agua dulce, toxicidad humana cancerígena y no cancerígena, debido a las emisiones de  gases. El reciclado de papel genera impactos beneficiosos en la mayoría de las  categorías de impacto, demostrándose la necesidad de fomentar el reciclaje de RSU.
