Partimos do debate polêmico das teses feudalismo x capitalismo, passando pela questão da produção familiar na década de 70 e 80 onde foram privilegiados alguns aspectos estruturais como o desenvolvimento do capitalismo no campo, o processo de acumulação de capital e os reflexos das transformações capitalistas para a produção familiar. Em seguida o debate sobre a 'funcionalidade' da pequena produção que gerou muitas controvérsias, e, finalmente, uma síntese das análises feitas à partir dos anos 90 sobre a agricultura familiar, enfocando o papel e os espaços desta no sistema capitalista.
